I visited the Theodore Payne Foundation nursery yesterday to walk their grounds and snap some photos and came across this Cobweb Thistle (Cirsium occidentale) just growing casually in their parking lot. I think a lot of people would see this and classify it as a native "weed" but come on, even the "weeds" of California are beautiful. Just look at that color and the texture of the flowerhead! I would definitely take this plant over some of the non-native cacti that get thrown into the ground amidst a sea of white marble chips. It's very spiny but its sharpness is only matched by its beauty. The dusting of pollen across the anthers is also amazing. #cobwebthistle #cirsiumoccidentale #californianativeplants #californianativeplant #californianativegarden #spiny #pollinator #pollinatorgarden

💐Wildflowers have been planted! 💐 🪻I combined 3 wildflower packs from @edenbrothers , a hummingbird seed mix from Dollar General, some miscellaneous seed packets I had, and some packs that were given to me (Thanks Aunt Heather!). The Eden Brother seeds include a Northeast mix, Late Bloomer mix, and Fairytale mix. My combination includes 40 types of flowers with about 80 varieties, and probably 80% are annuals and 20% perennials. Some of the plants from last year should reseed, as well. I try my best to get flowers that were native. 🌼 We made a big upgrade starting a second bed. Both are about 15' x 30'. Last year, I had blooms from June to November, and I'm hoping for the same thing this year. I will be going out every hour to check if anything's growing yet. 😂 🌱 We used some ashes from the wood furnace and some compost from the town before throwing the seed down. I had some helpers Saturday morning get everything laid out before it started raining (Thanks Ma, Dad, and Aunt Lorraine!). After the rain passes today, I'll add some more compost on top so the seeds that didn't soak in get covered. #garden #zone6b #gardenzone6b #gardengram #wildflowers #wildflowergarden #pollinatorgarden #greenthumb #edenbrothers

Bonus: I'm excited to share that next year, we will have TONS of fresh & dried flowers, in addition to as many Florida native plants that I can fit in the nursery!! 2025 will be my first attempt at going to markets... 👀 😓 🌞 *Yes, I still have a day job. What a lovely afternoon was had, at yesterday’s ‘Felting with Bees’ workshop! The sun shone...🌞 the sky was blue... and our Irish Black bees were buzzing busily when we visited the apiary to learn a few interesting facts .🐝🐝🐝 A quick stroll through our 'pollinators' paradise' brought us to our huge Euphorbia Mellifera, which is not only a beacon of biodiversity but smells like a big pot of honey ..👃A lot of 'sniffing' later.. it was time to get crafty with Karen Stevenson 's BEE-autiful merino wools and coloured silks…. Karen patiently instructed and guided everyone in the ancient art of felting using wet and dry techniques. Layering fine wool fibres using water and friction, coaxing them into shape with warm, soapy water, and then using specialized needles, our crafters skilfully sculpted fine wool fibres, one tiny poke at a time until they each created their own little work of art …inspired by … bees!!! A tea and 'honey cake break' made with honey from our bees ..along with a little rhubarb mead toast to ‘newfound creative skills’...helped make this a day to remember #visitAND #ulsterbeekeepers #britishbeekeepers #pollinators #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorfriendlygardening #pollinatorparadise #irishblackbees #feltingwool #feltingworkshop #felting #feltingart

If you are seeing these little holes in your garden beds they are the natural occurrence from cicadas waiting to emerge. The cicadas will form these holes as they tunnel near the soil’s surface. They will wait to emerge until the soil temps reach 64 degrees at an 8” depth. Walking my garden today I spotted several holes with the ‘dirt chimney’ made by the tunneling cicada. So… this will be happening shortly I imagine. I’m not quite ready, mentally, wondering how I will work with clients while cicadas fly about this summer, as they kinda gross me out. Thinking maybe an astronaut type suit 🤣! I also need to ready my garden. I want to get the netting to wrap my young Pagoda Dogwood. We recommend netting young, newly planted trees. The cicadas won’t kill them, but the trees can become a little disfigured. The cicadas will lay their eggs in the stems of smaller branches. So be prepared mentally and get the young trees netted! This should be quite the spectacle! And get your cicada merch, created by my niece @tlgreenwald3. Blue Bottle Fly (Calliphora vomitoria) Usually associated with decaying matter Blue Bottle Flies are also recognised as pollinators. Blue Bottle Flies are attracted to strong scented flowers such as Euphorbia. This individual may be waking from its winter hibernation and in need of a sugar refuel. No seed packet is safe from the sit test (there's several more underneath her) 🤦🏻‍♀️ My goal was to get all of the seeds I have this year (quite literally millions) sown by the end of April, especially as I'm away for a lot of June, and I'm soooo close! No idea what Penny will do when they're no longer here to sit on 😧 I've done a lot of annuals of course, but also some perrenials that were either first year flowering or ones I couldn't resist (not hard). Starting to get awkward questions about the amount spent on the garden this year, but it's for the greater good! The weather is still rubbish so I've been very good with potting on for once, but today I'm hoping to do some transplanting and direct sowing, as well as doing a few big pots! #catsofinstagram #gardencat #furbaby #garden #grow #kitchengardener #homeallotment #raisedbeds #thehappygardenerslife #nodig #nodiggarden #countryliving #weddingflowers #pollinatorgarden #gardenersofinstagram #cottagegarden #growyourown #ukgrowers #cutflowergarden #greenfingered #gardening #amateurgardener #greenhouse

One of my absolute favorite prairie spring ephemerals is back: the Wild Hyacinth (Camassia scilloides). This delicate blossom spreads itself by seed, but it is easier, faster, and often better to plant its bulbs for best results and a stronger start in your soil. Native to the eastern United States, Wild Hyacinth has a range that extends as far west as the eastern edge of the Central Plains. Wild Hyacinth is not very tall—only about 18 inches most of the time—and each plant usually produces perhaps two to four flower stalks. Plants emerge in March or April; each leafless stalk arises from the basal leaves to produce a single column of pale lavender, blue, or lavender-pink blossoms up to seven inches long at its tip. These flowers bloom from the base of the column through the top through May or June, but by the end of June the blossoms are gone, the basal leaves have yellowed, and the plant goes dormant for the season by the middle of July. It likes sun or part shade, well-drained soil, and a moderate to moist environment. In the Eastern Plains, it arrives and blooms during the rainy season, so it can and does do well even in an area that later becomes very dry—this is where my Wild Hyacinth are planted, and they are thriving. These delicate flowers produce an equally delicate and sweet fragrance that early pollinators adore, so they're a crucial food source for native bees and early Lepidoptera. Though you can use seed, it is challenging to germinate. Plant bulbs for best results—but plant them only in the spring or the fall. Regardless of which season you choose, they will nearly always wait to emerge until the following spring. Best places to purchase untreated Wild Hyacinth are @prairiemoonnursery and @prairienursery #wildhyacinth #camassiascilloides #pocketprairie #pocketprairiegarden #pocketprairies #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorgardens #pollinatorgardening #plantnative #plantnatives #indigenousplants #indigenousprairieplants #indigenousplantspecies #nativeflowers #nativeplantgardening #nativehabitatyards #gardensofinstagram #rewilding #frontyardprairie #backyardhabitat #homegrownnationalpark #gardensofinstagram #gardenforwildlife

I remember my first year having a real flower garden I heard in a podcast that perennials would sleep their first year, creep their second year, and leap their third year. This is my 3rd year and the plants are definitely leaping! This Coreopsis was a rescue plant from the Lowes clearance rack. With some extra watering and attention it has survived and is doing great. The bees and butterflies love the flowers and they add a cheery pop of color to bouquets. 💛 (I just got the soaker hoses laid out and need to cover them and yes that is a rubber snake in the background to hopefully scare off all the chipmunks and squirrels that have been digging in this garden bed.). #coreopsis #notillgardening #pollinatorgarden #cutflowers #zone8a #kennesaw #ladybughillgarden #flowerfarmerwannabe

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 ( 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 ) 📷 @brooklynbotanic “ Mertensia virginica (common names, Virginia cowslip, lungwort oysterleaf, Roanoke bells) is a spring ephemeral plant in the Boraginaceae (borage) family with bell-shaped sky-blue flowers, native to eastern North America. Virginia bluebells have rounded (ovate) and gray-green leaves, borne on stems up to 24 in (60 cm) tall. The leaves are up to 5 in (13 cm) long, smooth (entire) along their margins, petiolate at the bottom of the flower stem, and sessile at the top. The inflorescence is a nodding group, or cyme of flowers located at the end of the arched stems. The flower buds are pink, and the opened flowers are usually light blue, but occasionally pink and rarely white. The flowers have 5 shallow lobes fused into a tube at the base of the flower, five stamens, and a central pistil (carpel). M. virginica is native in the United States from Kansas in the west, to Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia in the south, and to Maine in the northeast. It is native in Canada in Ontario and Quebec. The plant can be found in rich, moist woods and on low, wooded hillsides. They often form large groups. The plant develops very early in the spring and flowers mid-spring. In early summer, each fertilized flower produces four seeds within wrinkled nuts. The plant then goes dormant till the next spring. The flowers attract long-tongued bees, such as bumblebees, butterflies, moths, skippers, hummingbird moths, flower flies, bee flies, and hummingbirds. Virginia bluebells had several uses in traditional Native American medicine, including as a pulmonary aid, tuberculosis treatment, and treatment for whooping cough (Cherokee,) root infusion antidote for treating poison, and root decoction venereal to treat venereal issues (Iroquois.) . Native Americans believed a tonic made from this plant could help heal those who were under-the-weather. Mertensia virginica is edible, including the flowers. In cultivation, M. virginica has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. “ - Wikipedia

The #longhoverfly Sphaerophoria scripta is a common yellow-black fly from the hoverfly family with a quite characteristic narrow abdomen. The adults feed on nectar and pollen of various plants, while the larvae eat aphids. The larva can eat up to several dozen aphids during growth. Large populations of this and other hoverflies are good at controlling the invasion of aphids. #gawronówka #łąkakwietna #flowermeadow #grassland #sphaerophoriascripta #kulibodałąkowa #sony #cowtrawiepiszczy #macrophotography #macrofotografie #owadyzapylające #pollinators #pollinatorgarden

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) - Forgot to share these beauties when they emerged on the farm weeks ago before the trees began to leaf out. Forever a first sign of spring for us these lovely #nativeplants have two stages. The fragrant white flowers appear in early spring and attract pollinators. Its stems have a red juice that is toxic to herbivores. Early on a leaf coils around the delicate bloom and opens after the flower fades into a unique shape that can be up to 6” wide. #bloodroot #sanguinariacanadensis #prairie #prairieplants #choosenativeplants #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #prairieconservation #plantnative #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #mchenrycountyil #prairierestoration #prairieconservation #prairielife #prairiegarden #prairieflowers #illinoisprairie #illinois #midwest #prairiesedgegarden

GLEN IRIS This location is a lesson in making the most of a small space. The 67 sq m area also has a challenging layout with some portions just over a metre wide and a raised deck that sits substantially above ground level. To compensate for these aspects of the site, we were careful to engage the borrowed landscape by replacing the timber paling fence with a bespoke aluminum slat fence which provides privacy from the outside but allows residents a view into the park beyond (and keeps the cat from running off when it explores the garden). Large eucalypts that could not be placed on the client’s lot are invited to become part of the tableau through considered use of void and form that draw the eye up and out of the garden. To complete the immersion, we chose a plant palette designed to attract pollinators and wildlife, making this private oasis truly a part of its broader landscape.
