Very fun day test driving a friend’s new-to-him custom built 550 Spyder replica. One of the only cars in town that makes my Elise feel portly! It was so fun but VERY tight inside and I struggled to work the clutch. But such a beautiful car, and great sounds from the carbureted Porsche 4-cylinder. If you look closely you’ll see he has quite a few fun p-cars in his garage. The turbo’s the most fun to drive, and demands your full attention when boost comes on. The 356 is similar in feel to the 550 - perfect Sunday parade or cruise-around-town cars. Ca. 100 Porsche 550 wurden hergestellt und für 24.600 DM (ca. 73.500 Euro heute) an Privatkunden verkauft. Die meisten Wagen gingen in die USA. Die Marke Porsche war zu der Zeit in der USA jung, die Autos waren beinahe schmerzhaft authentisch und kompromisslos sportlich. Dies hat einer der wohl berühmtesten Käufer von Porsche schnell für sich gefunden. Schauspieler James Dean. Leider brachte ihm genau dieses Fahrzeug, den Tod. James Dean war unterwegs zur Rennstrecke von Salinas, Von Hollywood nach Salinas sind es genau 320 Meilen gewesen, diese werden benötigt um den Porsche 550 Spyder richtig einzufahren um ihn auf ein Racing-Wochenende vorzubereiten. Kurz vor 18 Uhr erreicht der 550 Spyder mit der auflackierten Startnummer 130 und dem Kosenamen „Little Bastard“ die für ihn Tödlich Endende Abzweigung zum Highway 41 nach Fresno. Dann kommt der Crash. James Dean stirbt auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus. Da von 1953 bis 1957 insgesamt nur 118 Rennsportwagen hergestellt wurden, werden diese sehr selten zum Verkauf angeboten und sind dementsprechend teuer. 2012 erzielte ein 550 in der USA einen Preis von 2,79 Millionen Euro. Die nachfrage ist aber so groß da sich ein Markt entwickelt hat, in dem detailgenaue Nachbauten, sogenannte Replicas, relativ kostengünstig verkauft werden. Even though the Porsche 550 spyder was a beautifully designed car, it wasn’t until they started racing them that drivers experienced design issues that needed to be rectified immediately. The most common problem was cooling, whether it was the front brakes overheating, especially around the tight US airfield tracks, or cooling of the type 547 engine. Many early spyders had their noses modified to push cool air to the front drum brakes. A simple fix was just to remove the front indicator lights, but many cut some quite crude air intake holes in the nose. Porsche was aware of this issue and the second production run which included the LeMans Werks spyders, were redesigned to include 2 oval air intakes into the nose which were vented through holes made into the front inner wheel wells. To cool the quad cam engine, there were many experimental designs which included two air scoops above the engine in the rear clam shell, or a number of gills cut into each side of the rear clam or the addition of holes or grills in the tail section, usually either side of the license plate light or directly below. Porsche waited until the next spyder model, the 550A before they address the engine cooling problem, by designing gilled carb inspection doors on each side of the engine plus moving the two rear grills further down the tail section.
