“Today is the day” Mixed media on watercolor paper 4 x 6” I just love how different the Ko’olau mountains look every moment; tendrils of fog caught on the peaks, white lines of water after a rain, uhiwai- the heavy dense fog that blankets the valley. This illustrated poster connects caribou teeth belts I saw in Sitka, Alaska as well as a "brush yo teef" colloquial saying that I can't get out of my head... So together you get Coral Teef. Complete with floss picker cleaner wrasses. I enjoyed the challenge of working with a limited color palette to capture layers of corals. This is the mural I painted for Kailua-Kona Lowe's Home Improvement store in 2021. The design shows Lowe’s at the center of a classic West Hawaii sunset surrounded by Hawaiian beauty spanning the ocean to the cosmos. The volcanic texture of old lava flows layered on top of one another depicts the dynamic, storied past of this special place. The starry sky blends into a sunset with mosaic shards of vibrant colors. Both the stars in the sky and the underwater critters are painted in brilliant metallic gold. They both exist in an intangible, ethereal way and yet our lives are made so much more meaningful by studying and engaging with them. Additionally, coral reefs represent the heart of the diverse and dazzling Kona community. Across the globe, coral reefs represent 1% of the ocean and support 25% of all marine life. Our bustling coral reefs offer critical infrastructure for underwater critters by providing shelter, food, and hiding places. Seeing the @Walmart mural in person was unreal! I am soooo stoked to have my work emblazoned across the 50' threshold of the Kailua-Kona store. Thank you to @nowart_la for connecting me! For this Kailua-Kona mural, I divided the long space into thirds: volcanoes, agriculture, and ocean. The first third shows sunrise at Mauna Kea and an erupting Mauna Loa. The airborne lava morphs into coffee cherries. The second third shows the agriculture of Big Island: kona coffee and macadamia nut tree groves. To transition to the last third, I morphed mango leaves into a bait ball of fish. There's a spotted eagle ray swimming through the bait ball. Then, you see fishermen with ahi and an outrigger canoe paddling in the shimmery water. My creative practice has been in flux the past few weeks. I'm traveling and spending time supporting my family so my schedule is all in a tizzy. I'm doing my best to maintain some semblance of normalcy (like social media and newsletter posts). I miss drawing in my sketchbook. It's a simple pleasure that I've honed over the years. My sketchbook is like an external hard drive for my brain. I upload ideas for safe keeping. Making marks with no preconceived notions helps me loosen up and get into the flow. I took some time this week to chill at an art museum and aquarium. Looove this picture from my recent branding shoot with @_emilychoy This painting is called Breach for the Stars. I painted it after my parents died in a car crash last year. We did a LOT of whale watching over the years. Humpback whales in Hawaii and Alaska were our favorite. I went to Maui for my birthday a few months ago and saw a humpback whale breach in front of a full moon. It was magical ✨ This kaleidoscope sky is something I’ve tooled around with a few times. Last Thursday and Saturday @hkmkona we were able to get more progress done on the keiki mural started!!! So excited about the progress we made. We ran into a few problems but figured it out and kept moving forward!!!. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing student… Ayame mahalo for all your amazing work!!! "The whole process from start to finish was seamless, we collaborated on the design and within days she had a rendering ready for us and started work the very next weekend, working from early in the morning until late in the day, and she completed the job earlier than scheduled and it was exactly the same as the rendering. This past Thursday @hkmkona we were able to get the keiki mural started!!! So excited about the progress we made. The students and I painted the start of background. This next Thursday we will use their sketches to add color to the wall. If you are available on Thursday morning from 9a-12p and want to help paint an underwater mural for the museum we would love to have you come down.
