Kūpeʻe (Nerita polita) variations. Kūpeʻe are another of Hawaiʻi’s beloved marine snails. These nocturnal mollusks belong to the Neritidae (nerite) family, making them cousins of pipipi, hapawai, hīhīwai, and pipiwai. During the day, kūpeʻe live in small sand burrows at the high tide mark. When night comes, they emerge from their homes to graze limu on rocks along the shoreline. This nightly voyage of climbing onto rocks is described by a particular term: eʻe. Kūpeʻe can be found across the Indo-Pacific and are indigenous to Hawaiʻi, and naturally have striking variation in shell color and pattern. Common colors include black with white speckles, grey, and ivory, but kūpeʻe can also come in bright orange, yellow, red, brown, and often have bands of contrasting color. Each color pattern is known by a different name, some examples being kūpeʻe palaoa (ivory), ʻeleʻele (black), and ānuenue (rainbow). Different populations have different occurrences of shell colors and patterns, both throughout Hawaiʻi and elsewhere in the world. These ones were drawn from individuals Iʻve seen snailing lately. Kūpeʻe, like many of Hawaiʻi’s native creatures, have experienced population declines in some areas as a result of human activity. I know I’ve found a good friend when I feel totally comfortable, safe, and at home to be unapologetically myself. When I’m around good friends and community, my soul feels at rest and at the same time energized and empowered. These thoughts on friendship, community, and finding rest for one’s soul came to mind when I encountered and painted this scene. There’s an incredible spot in Hawaii where I’ve gone scuba diving, where turtles gather to rest and recharge. Sometimes I’ve seen upwards of 30 turtles finding rest and safety together while they get their shells cleaned. It’s a peaceful scene as they gently sway in the current together, nestled between coral clumps. Wherever you find yourself today, I hope you take time to slow down, rest, and express gratefulness for those in your life who are safe and who you can fully be at rest around. These people are rare and make life beautiful. I often find it hard to let go of some of my paintings. Especially if there’s a good bit of time invested, or better yet, I notice a lot of growth. This one pushed me way outside my comfort zone. I don’t do people. Especially those in motion. Like, avoid it at all costs. Occasionally I will practice on my family and those definitely stay with me. But I’ve been holding onto this reference photo for 25 years knowing that one day it would make a great painting. And I’m so glad I did. There were moments in the midst of creating this that I felt like it was a disaster, but somehow convinced myself to push through. Which sounds a lot like life. Sometimes you’ve got to suffer through the ugly in order to realize the beauty 💗. I’m trying to challenge myself with this one and paint everything in…no graphic lining that I love to do. To be honest, I started with that because I wasn’t confident with my skills to paint in full flowers just yet. If I don’t try it I’ll never get where I want to be. • They’re not all winners haha. I’ve had to scrap a few concepts and paintings because they just weren’t working. It leaves me with self doubt and feeling like maybe I won’t be able to be better than the last thing I painted. What I’m learning is progress is a gradual ascent. There might be down moments, but it’s about how you keep going that matters in your growth. It was a real honor to be able to paint these beautiful islands from this location. Some of my earliest beach, ocean & family memories are from this place. On each trip to Maui, I've been able to come here with family & we've always had the best time, including this past summer when we stayed nearby for a family reunion. This painting shows the setting sun as seen from Kam 1, next to a boat that was anchored & stuck there at the time. Although this piece is numbered second in this triptych, I actually worked on & finished it last. When compared to the other 2 pieces in this series, the use of color shows that the sunset was further along when I made this piece. During my 2016-17 Maui visit, one of my last opportunities to paint came during a trip to "Kam 1" Beach Park with my uncle. He played beach volleyball there every week, so I tagged along a few times. Since I don't play much volleyball, I'd usually head out to the beachfront for a bit to sketch and paint. This evening, I had enough time--about an hour--to work on 3 paintings, which I ended up putting together as one piece later on. "West Maui from Ho'okipa" Watercolor on paper December 23, 2016 7½" × 11" Find it now at the link in my bio! 30% of proceeds going to Maui fire survivors. This is my personal favorite of the paintings I made during my 2016-17 stay on Maui. I remember finally feeling at ease painting the ocean as I made this piece, "catching a wave" in the only way I know how. This piece shows West Maui--covered in clouds as usual--from Ho'okipa Beach Park on the North Shore. On the right is Kahakuloa Head, and in the foreground on the bottom left is a little more information on where I was sitting: an elevated area of green grass on top of red-brown soil. I've been told this section of Ho'okipa is the site of an old heiau, or Hawaiian ceremonial/spiritual site. Looking at this series reminds me of how it feels to be there during different types of weather & different times of day. This image feels like the clear but windy mornings--I can feel the trade winds moving through this piece. A few days before I painted this, historic rainstorms turned Maui gray & dark for days with mudslides shutting down roads; and a few days after I made this, the Kona winds brought in a lot of vog causing unsettling haze to distort the views I'd gotten used to. That experience taught me to appreciate these clearer days.
