Brewery: Mount Saint Bernard Abbey ABV: 7.4% Style: Trappist Ale Near the former coal mining town of Coalville, Mount Saint Bernard Abbey - the only recognised trappist monastery in the UK - brew their ale. If you do some research on the aptly-named Coalville, you’ll see such terms as ‘regeneration framework’ and ‘overseas investment’ - there’s even the UK’s biggest Amazon fulfilment centre built in the town that is home to just less than 40,000 people - but being a product of the industrial revolution and having relied for so long on de trop industries, the town has likely been promised more than has ever been delivered to it over the past century. That’s why it’s doubly poignant that the monks of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey choose to preserve a great history of trappist beer making in the surrounding area. Tynt Meadow, the Abbey’s strong English Trappist Ale, pours a deep mahogany colour, with low carbonation for the style. It smells of dry fruit, figs and prunes. It’s rich, syrupy and inviting in aroma with the slightest hint of caramel and brown sugar running through the spine of the scents. The taste is powerful and immediately likeable. My eyes lit up on the first sip. It’s got rich chocolate (not too bitter), roasted malts, caramel and the homeliness of an old-fashioned treacle pudding. There is a creaminess to the body that belies the carbonation - almost stouty in nature. But the flavour profile is big and gutsy. It’s as if someone blended a rich, boozy barley wine with a creamy, chocolatey porter to achieve a wonderfully organic parity. I love the taste journey this sends you on. Tynt Meadow is a homage to place, to heritage and to the monastic tradition of brewing that goes back centuries in Europe. It also happens to be an absolutely delicious ale. You don’t need to go on a trip to Belgium to experience world-class trappist beer - there’s one within the very shores of the UK. This deserves to be uttered in the same breath as Rochefort and Westmalle. Try it if you haven’t. Das nächste Bier aus dem #bierpaket des Monats Mai @diebierothek der #beerfluencer ist das Brogue Irish Red @ryeriverbrewingco welches sich im Glas 🍻 in fuchsrotem Gewand mit beständiger beiger Schaumkrone zeigt. In die Nase 👃🏻 steigen Aromen von roten Früchten und einer Komposition aus bestem Malz und etwas Karamell. Der Alkoholgehalt dieses Red Ales liegt bei gerade einmal 4,4% ABV. Geschmacklich 👄 nehme ich hier rote und dunkle Beeren und eine feine Malznoten mit dezenten Karamellauszügen wahr. Die Bitternote gesellen sich ganz minimal mit jedem Schluck dazu.
