Here’s some glorious reasons why we do the postures in yoga according to some hatha yoga traditions: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀1. to prep our beautiful bag of skin & our mind for meditation (it’s much easier to sit down all healthy n calm n focused for a lil while after) 2. to get rid of any physical and energetic blockages in the body (yupp, you are energy, in fact all is, is what they say ☝🏻and Yoda agrees) 3. to flush the energy channels (called nadis) so that energy can move into a certain direction all nice and smooth 4. to refine our physical awareness - it then becomes easier to direct the mind to certain areas in the body for particular types of meditation 5. Yogi friends, did I forget anything here? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀If you have just started out on your yoga game, performing asana (yes, Janet, the postures) can become a fun ride when you make something like a *tada* “moving meditation” out of it (focus on sensations in body and bring awareness to breath, bring cheeky monkey mind back to present moment again and again and again and so on and so forth)... and you may end up noticing what a marvelous vehicle 🚂 you’re riding through this chaotic theatre play (aka life)here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can you be an awesome yogi without contorting your legs? Hell yeah. Many traditions actually value practices like pranayama and meditation much more than just hopping into downwarddog. Yoga includes a vaaaaaast (omg, like, really vast) array of traditions and practices, but somehow that fact hasn’t trickled down into most of Western culture yet. G’day. Is what I’m doing in that pose something out ancient yoga friends showcased back in the days on hot and dusty Asian grounds? Probably not (especially not in tights and definitely not if you had an uterus). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you (like I also used to) think when you get on your mat you actually play around with an authentic, ‘ancient’ mindbody practice? In case you did, let me get you a tissue. Because guess what, the yoga we practice today on our cute little yogamats has been shaped by several different traditions over thousands of years, all having a slightly different understanding of the body and mind romance and appropriate techniques to deal with their issues. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Modern yoga is, in fact, not an invention of Hindu culture but rather a wild mishmash of different lineages and cultures: e.g. we got some influence from our Buddhist pals in there, some from the Jain lads, quite a lot of stuff from our Tibetan dudes (apparently especially posture-wise), and even a bit from some Persian sects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And yoga is still “in progress”: These days you see pilates elements in yoga classes or even goats jumping around those glorious yoga mats (google “goat yoga”). If that’s really yoga is another question, but just to make you a teenytiny bit more aware: what you’re practicing in many yoga schools today would be unrecognizable to most of our ancient yogi friends, running around in their loincloths.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However☝🏻, although there may not be “the one yoga”, many awesome elements from those traditions back in the days still made it into the 21st century and into our yoga schools 🥳- and the staggering hype confirms: this shit is somehow working real well nevertheless. #yay #thisshitworks 📷by @posh_foto ☺️ yogapants and top @besonnen_berlin 💓

Lying meditation flipped on ma belly 👻... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anyway - listen up, dear full-time or part-time yogis . Ever wondered why our good ol’ friend Patanjali (smart compiler of the famous Yoga Sutra - 3/4th ctry CE and easily found in the yoga section of your fave book shop) doesn’t mention hatha yoga postures at all (except asana - here basically meaning “sit down on your bum”)? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well, that’s because Patanja-pal the Great came from a different yoga tradition/ lineage than the lovely yogis that came to popularize our now-so-cheerished physical hatha yoga postures later on (between 8th-12th CE during fun tantric times). Patanjali boy’s focus is more set on presenting awareness-based strategies guding you towards stilling your mental chitchat; Hatha Yoga then goes on to include our body, breath, and subtle energies in its practices. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eventually, it’s all yoga - all potentially guiding you towards legit insights, overall wellbeing and a few more sparkles in your life. You pick what resonates most, according to your individual chaotic life circumstances. Yasss you can play around beautifully with yoga postures but if you don’t pay attention to what’s goin on in your pretty little head at that moment yoga becomes dull n mindless gymnastics and you can’t even call it “yoga” no more. Cause yoga means “union”, union with the present moment, union with the infinite, or the essence of what you fundamentally are (hint: it’s not just lame flesh and bones). And that stuff is where the magic happens, not when you go upside down or force yoself into the splits. Be a smartypants and work on your beautiful mental capacities. When you come to my class, I’ll make you smile in the beginning and at the end. And sometimes in between. I’ll say “Smile, life is good.” Because when you’re all cramped up or trying too hard you build up soo much tension that you don’t get anywhere. Neither physically nor energetically nor spiritually. Not that there’s anywhere you have to get to. It helps to let go at some point though let me tell ya - and it’ll be muuuch easier to become present and focus your mind, promise. When you come to my class we’ll also practice a hell lot of “Relaaax the space between your eyebrows”. Not just because it’s your connection to that badass pineal gland thingy somewhere hidden in your pretty brain, where a whole bunch of nerves flow together and you can experience fireworks when you’re all tuned up (or in). Also because we hold sooo much tension in our forehead (thinking too much hey) that it helps to direct our awareness and relaxation powers towards it (also helps to avoid those cheeky wrinkles yay). Because when it’s all tense up there how you gonna sense that awesome tingling sensation in between your beautiful eyes..? Recently read that (tantric) hatha yoga practice is shaped by many short ☝🏻practices during the day where the practitioner grooves into full presence and mental stillness (we have given monkey mind a delicious banana to focus its full attention on, aka you have consciously focused your cheeky mind onto an object of choice, like a mantra, your beautiful breath, a yantra, a visulization etc.). That way, it’s been said, the practitioner is able to drop into stillness quicker, and practice everywhere and at any time, whatever may be happening around him or her. So how bout taking pressure off yourself to start off with, begin with practicing just sweet little 5 minutes a day, and slowly build up. Maybe at some point you feel like doing more. Maybe not. Maybe 5 mins is awesome enough for now, and thats cool, too. Whatever helps. Btw., the apps Headspace or 1GiantMind offer awesome meditation practices for that and can help with the starting process biiig time.
