In a message to Putin relayed by state media on Sunday, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that his « re-election fully reflects the support of the Russian people ». On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters that “China and Russia are (…) comprehensive strategic partners of coordination for a new era ». The two geopolitical powers have forged closer ties in recent years due to a shared mistrust of the West.Putin said in a victory speech on Sunday that he expects ties with Beijing to become even stronger. The official Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jung-Un congratulated Vladimir Putin on his reelection on Monday. North Korea got closer to Russia after it shipped weapons for use in Ukraine and received support from Moscow for its missile development. India boosts Africa lending to counter China in expanding its influence in world’s second-largest continent Africa has become the second-largest recipient of credit from India as the country is making efforts to catch up with China in growing its impact in the resource-rich continent, as per a new report. 42 African nations have till now received about $32 billion or 38% of all credit extended by India in the last decade, just a few percentage points below its neighbours, Harsha Bangari, the managing director of India’s Export-Import Bank said as per a Bloomberg report. Bangari further said that the funding is an instrument of India's “economic diplomacy.” She then added that India has also opened up 195 project-based lines of credit worth about $12 billion across Africa, which is three times the number it has in its own region in the last decade. “Africa has made good use of credit lines,” extended for projects that include health care, infrastructure, agriculture and irrigation and India is seeing a steady increase in demand, she said. India, despite its recent efforts to engage with nations in Africa, the world's second-largest continent, has lagged behind its bigger and wealthier neighbours. While China’s loans to Africa have plunged since 2016, overall in the 10 years to 2020, it promised $134.6 billion to African nations, as per data from Boston University’s Global Development Policy Center. That's almost 11 times more than what India has offered, according to Bloomberg reports. Indian government's efforts to push for deeper ties with Africa Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has pushed for more significant engagement with the world's second-largest continent, Africa, encouraging both economic and diplomatic ties. India is looking at the opportunity to expand deeper into the continent as Africa is currently dealing with the economic fallout of the Covid pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine. In the last nine years, 18 of the 25 new Indian embassies or consulates were in Africa. During his visit to Cape Town, South Africa, from 1-3 June, EAM participated in the BRICS foreign ministers‘ meeting and the Friends of BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on June 1 and 2, respectively. The meetings provided an opportunity for EAM to present India’s perspectives on global and regional developments, global economic recovery, and the functioning of multilateral institutions, including BRICS. The Joint BRICS Foreign ministers‘ statement issued on 1 June reflected the collective stance of the member nations. In addition to the multilateral engagements, EAM held separate bilateral interactions with South African foreign minister Naledi Pandor and other foreign ministers attending the BRICS and Friends of BRICS meetings. EAM also met with the President of South Africa, along with other BRICS ministers, to discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest. This will be the first visit by an External Affairs Minister of India to Namibia. During the visit, EAM will call on the country's top leadership and meet with other Ministers of the Government, the government release informed. Is Mozambique becoming India’s gateway for investments and security in Africa? India’s strong and expanding partnership with the countries on the south-eastern coast of Africa will once again be in the spotlight during External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar’s visit to Mozambique this week. Jaishankar, who kicks off the Africa trip from Uganda on Monday, arrives in Maputo on Thursday to further stimulate and build upon the vibrant, versatile and robust bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Mozambique enjoys a privileged geographical location with its 2500 km long coast bordering on the Indian Ocean. It was earlier described by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘gateway for Indian investment in Africa’ during his visit to the country in 2016. The Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) of India has been an effective tool for fostering collaboration in human resource development. India, Egypt Elevate Ties To Strategic Partnership Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India has decided to elevate bilateral relations with Egypt to a strategic partnership. "We've decided that under India-Egypt Strategic Partnership we will develop a long term framework for greater cooperation in the fields of politics, security, economics and science," PM Modi said at a joint press conference after holding wide-ranging talks with visiting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
