While it's a small step in the right direction and not the descheduling that we truly need, the DEA announced today that they would move forward with rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III - the biggest drug policy move in 50+ years. We’re always looking for good news to share with our community 🧡🗞️ This week, The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) under The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued final regulations to protect LGBTQ+ young people in foster care. The rule explicitly prohibits conversion for youth in foster care, creates additional protections for LGBTQ supportive parents from abuse from the child welfare system, and ensures LGBTQ+ children have access to specially designated foster care placements that are LGBTQ+ affirming. Our research shows that victimization and rejection from caregivers can result in LGBTQ+ youth involvement in the foster care system, which is strongly associated with greater suicide risk among youth in general. Recognizing the intersectionality of queer and trans experiences in and outside of foster care is vital to crafting policy with LGBTQ+ young people in mind. The new abortion ban in Florida has caused disappointment and desperation among Louisiana residents, who are now facing restricted access to crucial healthcare. As a result, hundreds of women are forced to travel farther, wait longer, and face financial burdens just to exercise their reproductive rights. The increased distance and expenses associated with traveling for abortions will make the process more challenging for Louisiana residents. In fact, from June 2022 to January 2024, @ppgulfcoast spent approximately $870,000 to assist women with abortions, including around 1,200 Louisiana residents who traveled to Florida to receive abortions up to 15 weeks.
