Over the next several days, I'll be breaking out an essay on my grandmother's postpartum death for UCI's Nursing School's HUMANITAS magazine's Mother & Baby issue and the generational impact that the disparities in Black maternal health brings. I found this picture earlier this year in a drawer of photos my mother had of my grandmother, left, pregnant and happy, just a few months before her death on October 10, 1950; my great aunt, Della, center, and my great aunt, Willie, left, holding cousin, Roy Lynn. Last week was #blackmaternalhealthweek, and I am in awe of what I'm learning about all the work being done around #blackmaternalmortality to bring more awareness to and implementation of, comprehensive, holistic care to Black mothers and their babies through both prenatal and postpartum care. This is happening in the OC region, in California, and throughout the U.S. where the maternal mortality rate continues to be higher for Black women than white and Hispanic women. Thanks to Lynell George @wanderingfoot for introducing me to Leonie Gombrich, the magazine's editor. I had no idea this story was where our initial conversation would lead us. In May 2018, when I was walking down the aisle of my cousin's wedding outside of @fivepointsmuseum in Cleveland, I had no idea I was walking on the grounds of was once was the Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) Hospital where Grandmama Catherine died in October 1950 from a botched tubal ligation surgery after delivering her fourth child. I better understand why it happened; why it didn't have to. Being on the site of the museum this past week gave me shivers. It was during this 2018 trip that I first visited my grandmother's gravesite. Is there some spiritual, ancestral connection at work here? Was she trying to get my attention? Well, she got it! I knew only bits and pieces of the mother she was; I've since been getting clearer on the woman I believed her to be. I'm in awe of how far I've come to build a narrative to reclaim Catherine's life, not a story just centered on her death. Because her life mattered. Last Fall, while Tennessee research tripibg through archives and such, I found and shared a similar picture with just the women of the Tillery (Mama's daddy's side) family and friends.
