Therapist: "Aren't you angry at your neurosurgeon? I don't see anger." Me: "I haven't been able to be angry, while managing this on my own." Therapist: "I think we should get you angry." Me: "I'm starting to feel it." I had a benign brain tumour removed years ago, it wasn't successful. I was left with complications to my health. The symptoms are manageable, for the most part. I see that slowly starting to change. There's this unspoken understanding that I won't live a full life. My several specialists I see twice a year can't put me at ease about this. This has affected my quality of life, my energy, and my time. And it's tiring trying to explain a very rare illness to doctors. I'm happy to explain to those I'm close to though. I'm not happy to hear "at least it's not cancer." Although I am very fortunate it's not. I have my own set of battles to fight. And there's no treatment. At the end of summer I'll do my yearly MRI, to check if the tumour, that came back has grown. And if I require surgery again. When I was first diagnosed, I was really struggling with my depression. I isolated myself. I recall going to the hospital, filling out the forms, meeting with the doctors on my own. Someone came for the surgery. I said I was fine after a day or two of being home. I wasn't, but it was better that way, for me, even though I couldn't walk. My depression got worse. I know I'm a strong woman. Because despite all this, I fight. I do the work. And I work really hard. I seek joy. I can't explain why really. I just keep making sure I do. The last session with my therapist. Me: "I'm angry, that must mean I'm in a good place." #braintumourawarenessmonth

In 2023, a literature review investigated the risk factors associated with cognitive and neuropsychological impairment in children receiving treatment for brain tumours. Despite improved survival rates in recent decades, both the disease and intensive treatments pose significant risks, potentially leading to functional impairments and reduced quality of life. The summer of 2023 started like any other, with Tracy taking part in her usual activities, until she began to get hints that something wasn’t right. She’d just helped her son move to Calgary and was feeling less like her energetic self. Then, she found she didn’t have much of an appetite in the mornings. Defying odds, CJ Brown overcame ATRT cancer diagnosed at 2. After intense treatments failed, SickKids' innovative therapy with an Ommaya reservoir turned the tide. Over 2.5 years of targeted chemo led to remarkable recovery. CJ is now 19 years old, he has his driver’s license, and he’s gearing up to enter college for his electrician training. He speaks French, English, and is fluent in sign language. CJ’s story inspired a new treatment path, as well as continued research under the direction of Dr. Annie Huang, improving survival rates by 40% without radiation's severe effects. Our appointment with the Oncologist came with mixed results. The good news was the tumour looked ‘gentle’. The bad news was it’s in the worst spot, right against my brain stem. We were given three options. Wait and watch with life on hold, no running, no training, no raising the heart rate incase it bleeds again. A biopsy that would be a 2 day stay in ICU, 3 days on the ward and then return to life as normal while we wait for results to come back from Germany, hopefully with a chemo option so we can avoid radiation. We are heavily warned off radiation, the results can be catastrophic in this location. But our third option is to skip the biopsy and go straight to radiation. The obvious answer to us was to biopsy and hope that this tumour isn’t attached to the brain stem, and there’s a chemo option. Our date for surgery is set for January 3rd, and we are obviously nervous but we are under the impression it’s a straight forward procedure and we will come out the other side with nothing more than 5 days in hospital. So we head into hospital, where I have a pre op MRI done in order to measure exactly where the tumour is. The next day I’m first on the list for surgery, Emma comes the whole way with me, until I leave the pre op bay and head into theatre. While being wheeled away it’s running through my mind that this could be the last time I ever see her, and I haven’t even had a chance to say goodbye to the boys.

I met with my new neurosurgeon today. Had a great visit with him. He’s in this to help give me more time & fight this ugly monster. I’m scheduled for my craniotomy next Wednesday May 15th. They are going into the same spot as before on the front of my head. I did a bunch of tests today as some pre op. I do have to go for one more mri before they operate. There are a few spots in the middle of my brain that are showing up & they want to see if they are growing. If they are growing they will not go forward with putting me through an operation as that area is unfortunately not operable. Then we will see what is next for me. Thank you for all the well wishes.
