Today’s a good day to remember that the Bible shows us lots of different ways women build relationships when creating families. Ruth and Naomi are an amazing example, showing us that familial affection is bigger than labels like mother, father, son or daughter. As a woman who lost 3 babies before the birth of my daughter, I really resonate with Naomi. I was 37 when G came into our life. Considering how early people married and had children in ancient Israel, Naomi was likely close to 37 when her sons died. I like to think of Ruth being more than Naomi’s daughter-in-law, and instead her companion and friend. I certainly needed mine when I lost my children, and it is comforting to imagine Naomi found that with Ruth. I gave this to my 72 yr old Mommy today for Mother's Day! She is a Scorpio and has always been low key goth (on the inside!). She loves Stephen King and all things horror and creepy. (Does that explain alot about me!?🖤☠️🖤)... She loved it. This was the design that got me into cross stitching. She fell ill last year, and when I saw this design I knew she had to have it. I had no idea what I was doing but it helped me cope with her repeated hospital stays. She has been home for 6 months in a row so things are calmer (for now at least)... After Molly died I needed a simple project to focus on each evening. So I did a pattern called "Little ways to help the earth" from Emma Congdon's book "Cross stitch for the earth" which I got from the dreaded Amazon 😔 Hadn't really done a pattern like this before where I had to do lots of counting squares. I kitted up using the called for DMC and 16ct Antique White Aida from @lakesideneedlecraft The fabric colour was super nice and I loved seeing progress every couple of days when a new motif was finished. This project combined two of my loves... cross stitch and the environment. I was worried about framing this as I didn't think it would fit a standard frame but I was able to buy a lovely frame from Etsy which suits it really well. I laced the back of it for framing. I'm hoping to gift this to my work kitchen so would be tempted to repeat it sometime for my own kitchen. Upskilling again.... moved on to 32 ct Evenweave, used an 11 x 11 Q snap and kitted up myself with DMC from @lakesideneedlecraft. All firsts! Pattern is "Holiday in the bottle" by Maria Brocko from Etsy @cutpatternsbymaria. I found the transition from Aida to Evenweave really hard and definitely slowed me down. Also the Q snap did not fit in my stand which was annoying but I loved the tension on the Q snap and being able to see the whole pattern without moving the frame. Very pleased with how it turned out and have made it into a FFO with a beautiful frame from Etsy. Will go into storage until nearer Christmas. This one I was finishing off in Molly's final days. So this was my first upskilling project. I moved on to 16ct Aida. Whilst I liked the 16ct I was not a fan of all the backstitching on this project and there was *a lot* of blended threads 🥴 This was a Luca-S kit from Etsy and I loved the look of the brightly coloured parrot. I would however say that I was put off backstitching for life. Kit came with the display hoop and currently lives in my spare room along with another parrot and bright colours! Today should be halfway on Garnet and Sapphire. Garnet is right on schedule. 3482 stitches, 50.6%. Sapphire is another story. Thanks to that big 🐸 visit, it's at 2956 stitches, 43.0%. Next up was a quick wee make. I tiny full coverage kit from Heritage Crafts. I changed the wording at the bottom from "Go your own way" to "Go against the flow". I first saw a wall mural with this depiction when I was at a children's home in Jamaica one summer when I was 19. I have loved it ever since and it has been a bit of a mantra for me, which I want to pass on to my nephews and nieces. It's so important not to do what everyone around us is doing but to follow God's word. This now resides in my spare room for the kids along with associated paraphernalia! Forgot about this wee quick make between Sally Squirrel and The beach huts. I did it in a couple of weeks whilst travelling to Scotland in New Year of 2023 to visit family. I used anchor thread because I could buy it in my LNS. It was a free pattern from @caterpillarcrossstitch when I bought my first ever needle minder! Fully finished in a nurge display hoop. So this was my first full piece and I picked it because of my love of beach huts! It was a steep learning curve. Like all my hobbies I learnt through YouTube and I found FlossTube. I started willy nilly but as I watched YouTube I introduced new methods. I was kindly gifted a stand which I loved and I found out about full coverage. Half way through I switched to using the diagonal parking method. I completely it in about four months. I started "Sally Squirrel" probably 15 years ago when I was on holiday in Spain with some friends. I put it away when I had about 2/3 of it complete and brought it out with the intention of working on it many times over the years, but never did. Then I finally started working on it again and finishing it in 2022. And so began my love of cross stitch.She was a good travel piece for the train. I was amazed at the difference back stitch made. I had seen mutterings yesterday of people desiring to stitch a "I would choose the bear" cross stitch pattern... so here we are I made 2 versions 1 saying "i would choose the bear" & the second saying "the bear would choose me too" this may not be to everybody's taste, but when I first saw people speaking of choosing the bear online & went to investigate what this represented I remember thinking "I'd choose the bear and the bear would probably choose me too" these are free... all I ask is if you are in a position to do so then please consider donating to a local charity supporting women who have gone through things that nobody should ever have to go through... women who would of rather chose the bear these can be found on our ko-fi page the link is at the top of our profile for context I am a happily married woman with a wonderful husband.
