New thing that I didn't recognise! But after a spot of research, it turns out its Honeycomb Worm Reef. There's photos after my video for a close up. The honeycomb worm is a reef-building worm. Each worm builds itself a protective tube from sand and shell fragments, which together form a reef that looks like honeycomb. Each little hole is like a worm apartment and is where the worm lives and feeds. Each tube even has an overhanging porch! The honeycomb worm is a filter feeder, extending feeding tentacles into the water column when the tide is in to catch floating particles of plankton or detritus. They live mainly on the shoreline and will build hummock-shaped reefs on most hard substrates - from rocks to coastal defence structures. They need hard substrates to settle on and sand to build their tubes with - so are only found in places where both are plentiful. I do have to say, I found the visual texture of this a little...... odd? Creepy? Disturbing? Not really sure of the right word, just a bit 'oooeyy', do you know what I mean? Or is it just me! So there you go - every day is a school day 👩🏫 I collect information about the natural world, like a miner seeking out precious gems! To me, it's always fascinating, and this was completely new 😁 which makes today a most excellent day! And I got to paddle with Little Dude too, who is definitely turning into a beach bump hound, who will now follow me straight through rock pools and wet bits with only the slight raising of one of his diminutive little brows! 😂🐶 Happy days.
