Die Sombrero Galaxie ist etwas Besonderes. Sie ist viel kleiner als unsere Milchstraße, aber dennoch “schwerer”. Das schwarze Loch in ihrem Inneren hat die doppelte Masse wie „unser“ schwarzes Loch. Im „Halo“ um die Galaxie befinden sich tausende uralte Kugelsternhaufen. Mit „nur“ 30 Millionen LJ Abstand ist sie gar nicht mal so weit weg von uns. The Sombrero Galaxy is something special. It is much smaller than our Milky Way. However, the black hole inside it has twice the mass of „our“ black hole. In the „halo“ around the galaxy there are thousands of ancient globular clusters. At „only“ 30 million light years away, it is not that far away from us. Im Sternbild Löwe tummelt sich in 35 Millionen LJ Entfernung ein nettes Trio. Das Leo Triplett ist auch deswegen interessant, weil man aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven auf die Galaxien schaut. Nur 3,5 Stunden Belichtung, aber dafür doch schon erste Details… In the constellation Leo there is a nice trio at a distance of 35 million LY. The Leo Triplet is also interesting because you look at the galaxies from different perspectives. M101, die Pinwheel-Galaxie oder Feuerrad-Galaxie, besteht aus ca. 1 Billion (!) Sternen und ist mit einem Durchmesser von 170000 LJ sehr groß. 20 Millionen LJ beträgt die Distanz zur Erde. Übrigens: Alle Sterne, die wir nachts „einzeln“ sehen können, gehören zu unserer Galaxie, der Milchstraße. Sterne in anderen Galaxien können wir selbst mit großen, erdgebundenen Teleskopen nicht „vereinzelt“ sehen oder aufnehmen. In ihrer Menge erzeugen sie aber diese „milchige“ Strukturen, warum Galaxien auch Galaxien heißen (griechisch Gala/Galaktos=Milch). Daher heißt unsere Galaxie auch Milchstraße, da die alten Griechen in dem „Sternen-Band“ glaubten eben „Milch“ zu erkennen. Heute wissen wir, dass wir einfach auf einen „Nebenarm“ unserer eigenen Galaxie schauen, wenn wir vor allem im Sommer die „Milchstraße“ bestaunen.
