My #TwentyFourBirdsMKAL shawl is finished and blocked and I think it is stunning! It’s a beautiful pattern in every way, perfect to the last detail, and knitting it over the past six weeks has been a joy! I’ll be revealing my shawl on Friday when the spoiler embargo is lifted and I can’t wait to share it with you all… In the meantime, when I shared my little leftover balls in my stories a few days ago, lots of you asked what the shades were, and I had to confess that the zingy chartreuse/grey was the very last skein of one of our ‘yarn from the meadow’ limited-run editions, that I’d snaffled from the stock crate, so this combo had never actually been available to anyone else (how rude!) But the spark I needed to recreate the elusive chartreuse, and make the shades I used up as a yarn pack was lit and I fired the dye pots up right there and then. Man kann zwar vorab viel planen, aber manche Probleme oder Ideen ergeben sich auch eben erst während man strickt. Ich bin mit der 3. Version des Kragens nun total zufrieden - allerdings passt jetzt die Form des Ausschnittes nicht mehr dazu und muss auch geändert werden. When I read a book I love I’m sometimes prompted to make yarn inspired by it. The pictures the story paints in my mind, the colours the words fill my head with, the mood, the lasting impression… This was one of those books. I devoured it in a couple of days (quick for me these days!) and I loved it. I always think Spring is the perfect season for a simple slipover, or indeed, a fancy fair isle one! It’s Bank Holiday Monday, and after a sunny but brisk walk along the beach at Sizewell (complete with a bacon bap/coffee reward from the wonderful Sizewell Tea), I’m back home in the garden and the first alfresco knitting of the year is go! I’ve just seen the weather forecast for the upcoming long weekend, and it’s looking disappointingly wet and windy but I’ll be making the most of it and hoping to make progress on some of the works-in-progress in my overflowing knitting basket! A couple of really lovely shawls popped up in my feed yesterday; the @westknits Faded Undulation Shawl and @dreareneeknits Melt Shawl. Both feature my favourite ‘feather & fan’ style stitch patterns but call for very different combinations of colour and yarn weight. Of course, I couldn’t resist having a rummage and there are just a couple of ‘stock crate’ yarn packs in the shop as I type. I’m taking a necessary break from the fun stuff today to get to grips with the bookkeeping 😬 (and it’s not even the woolly books, it’s the pottery books so @chrispenny_ceramics is about to owe me big time 😉). To ease me into a day of spreadsheets I had a little stash rummage and I’ve got myself a juicy carrot dangling! A little prize waiting for the end of the day… When I stumbled upon my stash of orange Navia yarn a few weeks ago, I also found a batch of ‘vintage’ Shibui Pebble in a gorgeous deep bitter brown with tiny lime green tweedy flecks. Pebble is a mix of recycled silk, merino, and cashmere and it’s a really light, airy, squishy yarn that knits up as a sport weight but is great mixed with other yarns too. So, I’m going to hold it with some hoo | sock in ‘until the bitter end’ to conjure myself another #TerrazzoSweater! It’s going to be airy yet cosy for spring and it’s going to look fab with my growing collection of #BobPants 🤩 I mean, even the not-fun bits of running a small business (or two 😵💫) are bearable with gorgeous yarn waiting at the end, am I right! Let me introduce the five ~core~ shades in our new spring/summer capsule collection… These are the shades that are firing my creative imagination as we head into a new season, and they’ve already inspired three new variegated shades that I’ll share here tomorrow, before the whole collection of eight shades hits the shop at 10:00am (gmt) on Friday March 1st. Oh yes! I’ve been head first down an arts & crafts rabbit hole for the past few days and now I’m brimming with inspiration! The news that Helen of Curious Handmade is about to launch her first MKAL shawl for a couple of years sent me reaching for colour swatches, rummaging in stock crates, and the dye pots are bubbling! The #TwentyFourBirdsMKAL promises to be a gorgeous journey, inspired by the glorious tapestries, prints, and design aesthetic of the arts & crafts movement, and we can’t wait!
So, this is where we’re at yarn-wise; I’ve come up with two pightle | fingering/4ply and two cade | singles yarn pack options, comprising some of my favourite combinations of some of my favourite shades. They will be in the shop at the weekend, and I’ll be able to dye more if needed, right up to the start of the MKAL on March 21st. A quick baby blanket made over the last couple of days 💜 This is the which way filet pattern. I initially got the pattern off Fibre Spider on YouTube. I've used it a few times now, and I love it. It is so easy to do and works up really quickly! Plus doesn't really use a lot of yarn! This blanket has used a smidge over 150g, which is one ball of Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake - @knitsirdar - and this colourway is just my favourite !!! I just love using this yarn for baby blankets. It's so so soft, washes amazingly and the colour change saves me sewing ends in! Hands down my favourite yarn!! Isn't Faustina GLOWING in her new Felix Cardigan? She knit this pattern by @savoryknitting in one of her favourite colours of Plied Yarn Penn Ave. (in Winterberry). This worsted/Aran weight yarn gives any project you make a little bit of marled magic, since each skein is plied using two contrasting colours. Although this yarn has a rustic charm, we have to admit we were all stunned by how soft and light it became after blocking- it is like a cloud! Because the fibres are woolen-spun, the resulting yarn is lofty and holds a lot of air, which is ideal for providing warmth without being heavy. Das #lisidress nimmt Formen an! Ich habe den Kragen vom alten Kleid aufgemacht und einen kleinen Stehkragen gestrickt - das gefällt mir viel besser! Den Rock habe ich auch bis zur Taille gerippelt - am unruhigen Maschenbild sieht man genau ab welcher Stelle ich dann mit der Rippelwolle gestrickt habe - und neu angelegt. Im Rücken ist nun ein elastischer Streifen Doppelstrick eingearbeitet, der dem Kleid mehr Form gibt. Außerdem halte ich den Rock schmaler. Das Weihnachtskleid für die Else. Ich stelle mir lange Ärmel mit schlichten geknöpften Bündchen und eine Peter-Pan-Kragen daran vor. Ich möchte es unbedingt noch bis Weihnachten fertig bekommen - zum einen damit die Else es anziehen kann, zum anderen weil da noch eine andere Idee in meinem Kopf vors ich hin reift, die zwar nicht unbedingt mit Stricken zu tun hat, aber immerhin auch mit Wolle.
