On the north coast lies Iran, and on the south coast lies the Musandam peninsula, shared by the United Arab Emirates and Musandam Governorate, an exclave of Oman. The strait is about 167km long, with a width varying from about 39-96km. A third of the world’s liquefied natural gas and almost 25% of total global oil consumption passes through the strait, making it a highly important strategic location for international trade. ⚠️ On January 27th, 2024, the Indian Navy's INS Visakhapatnam responded to a distress call from the Marshall Islands-flagged merchant vessel MV Merlin Luanda in the Gulf of Aden. The ship, with 22 Indian and 1 Bangladeshi crew members, had been hit by an anti-ship missile fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen the previous evening. INS Visakhapatnam deployed a firefighting team to help extinguish the fire on board. The US Central Command confirmed that Houthi rebels had fired a missile that struck and damaged the MV Merlin Luanda. This is the latest in a series of attacks on merchant vessels in the region. Earlier in January, another ship with Indian crew was targeted by drones in the Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy said it "remains steadfast and committed towards safeguarding merchant vessels and ensuring safety of life at sea." This incident comes amid rising concerns over threats to commercial shipping in the area from Houthi rebel attacks. In recent months, at least two other merchant vessels with Indian crew members have been impacted by suspected drone strikes off the coast of India. The Indian Navy has deployed warships in the region to respond quickly to distress calls and provide assistance. Única passagem marítima entre o Golfo Pérsico e os oceanos do mundo, o Estreito de Ormuz, com seu pouco mais 167 km de extensão e 54 km de largura no ponto mais estreito, é um dos pontos estratégicos mais importantes do comércio mundial. Por ele passam nada menos que 33% de todo o petróleo bruto transportado por mar, vindo de diversos produtores do Oriente Médio. Essa parcela equivale a aproximadamente 21 milhões de barris de petróleo transportados por dia, ou 1.2 bilhões de dólares por dia em petróleo. Localizado na interseção entre Irã (ao norte), Emirados Árabes Unidos e Omã (ambos ao sul), Ormuz é uma das principais e mais usadas rotas comerciais do mundo, caminho essencial para o escoamento e abastecimento da região. Além do Petróleo, por lá também passa 20% de todo o transporte marítimo mundial. Estima-se que 33 mil navios atravessam o Estreito todo os anos, desconsiderando embarcações menores. Para reduzir o risco de colisões, o Estreito segue o esquema de separação de tráfego aquaviário, com duas faixas de 3 km separadas por uma faixa de segurança no meio, sendo uma das faixas exclusivamente para entrada e a outra para saída de embarcações. A passagem é tão estratégica que qualquer ameaça de interrupção no tráfego ou sinal de conflitos em sua proximidade gera oscilação no preço do barril de petróleo mundo afora como estamos vendo nos últimos dias. Ao menos 15% do petróleo não refinado importado pelos Estados Unidos e mais de 30% das importações dessa commodity pela China passam por Ormuz. As opções ao Estreito para transporte de mercadorias são muito limitadas e custosas, aumentando ainda mais sua importância geopolítica. Once completed on October 25th that same year, this ultra large crude carrier comes in at 153,479 gross tons (321,186 deadweight tons), has a length of 1,152 feet (351.4 meters), and is capable of 15.7 knots. This comes at a time when West Germany is undergoing a spur of supertanker construction, such as the ever so slightly smaller tanker design TT240 (comprising fourteen similar hulls). Energy Determination is handed over to her owners, United Overseas Petroleum Carriers Inc., one of the many shipping companies that register tankers under a flag of convenience, with this occasion being Liberia. Being among the world’s largest ship, Energy Determination is solely capable of cape passages for the oil fields of the Middle East. For the better part of three years, Energy Determination enjoys a calm career traveling back and forth between the Middle East and various ports throughout the world. After delivery at Bonaire Island, the ULCC departs the Caribbean in late November of 1979 for Das Island in the Persian Gulf. Finally, on December 13th, the tanker is entering the Strait of Hormuz while still in ballast, and her crew are getting ready to take on their next load of crude oil. Around noon of that day, Energy Determination erupts from the port side! One of the port wing tanks has ignited, blowing out the hull and deck while simultaneously starting a fire that spreads aft. Her crew do what they can to fight the flames, but it is spreading too quickly and eventually overwhelms the superstructure. One of the sailors, perhaps trapped by smoke, dies prior to orders to abandon ship later that day. The blaze continues to eat away into the accommodations and down into the engine room, setting off small scale explosions. While this is happening, the flames also gradually move forward, if slower. 🇬🇧 This is the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception, also known as Portuguese Castle or Castle of Hormuz. Its building was ordered in 1507 when Afonso de Albuquerque first set foot on Hormuz island after seizing the Omani coast. Quite presumptuously, the castle was first named the Fort of Our Lady of Victory but … Albuquerque and his men soon had to withdraw from the island. They managed to recapture the place in 1515 and this is when the fort was completed and renamed. Located in the strategic strait of the same name, Hormuz became “an emergency stopover point for Portuguese ships travelling to Goa, Gujarat and nearby Qeshm (neighbouring island).” Portuguese rule on Hormuz ended in 1622 when the Safavid king Abbas I convinced the British East India Company to help him end the Portuguese presence in the area. Dengan lebar 48 km pada sisi tersempitnya, Selat Hormuz merupakan gerbang menuju Teluk Persia, tempat negara-negara penghasil minyak bumi berada, seperti Arab Saudi, Kuwait, dan Iran. The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s Navy says the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz are fully secure, stressing foreign powers are not welcome in the strategic region. "There is full security in all water borders of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and we always stand ready to ensure the security of the Islamic Republic's interests in international waters,” Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported on Friday. He added that Iran fully monitors the movements of every vessel that enters or exits the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the enemy knows that its movements are being under watch and it will receive a serious warning if it carries out the slightest act of violation. The IRGC Navy commander said Muslim countries of the Persian Gulf are responsible to maintain the region's security and do not need foreign powers in this regard, adding, “The Persian Gulf is our home and not a place for foreigners.” The IRGC is very serious in safeguarding the Islamic Republic’s interests and its borders, Tangsiri said, emphasizing, “We do not take any chances with anyone in this regard. We stand firm and we will stand until our last breath." Tensions simmer in the region in the wake of a suspected drone attack last week on the Israeli-managed tanker -- Mercer Street -- off the Omani coast, where two crew members were killed. With no evidence, the United States, Israel and Britain blamed Iran for the incident.
