Temps like this make it hard to recall the cold of last February 4, 2023, where we saw a high of 3°F (before the windchill) and an overnight low of -11°F. The first day … ughh not a fan. There was a time where I used to get excited, however, since my daughter died 15 years ago, the first day of school has been painful, sad, and a bittersweet reminder of what will never be. She would be starting her junior year of college now. So hard to believe. Over the years I’ve learned that no matter how much time has passed, the gaping holes in our hearts we feel as child loss parents is always there, and it’s especially ever so present on momentous occasions like these. On the first day, I don’t strive for the perfect picture of my other children, even though yes, it’s an important day for them also. Instead I take photos nearly every day, in hopes of freezing time and creating memories out of the messy and mundane, all too aware tomorrow is never guaranteed. For many, on the first day, parents happily capture their children’s adorable smiles eager to share them with the world, proudly acknowledging their rapid growth and milestones. And that is absolutely something to praise. But let’s be honest, every day is an important day, not just the first. We should be celebrating and delighting in the ordinary days, grateful to have yet another day with our children. Don’t get me wrong, we (bereaved parents) love seeing our friends’ children grow and achieve. But sometimes for those in our awful club, it isn’t easy. For all you parents who aren’t able to get those “first” day of school photos, those whose children’s room sits empty, those who are wishing to fast forward through this new season…. I am praying you feel God’s comfort and you are surrounded with beautiful memories that outshine the sadness. This week I finally fell into the routine I've been striving for the last year. What took me so long? Feeling like so much was out of my control, rather than truly living in each moment as though This Is MY Life. Externalizing blame rather than acknowledging the hurt part of me that needed comforting before she can overcome the barriers she let settle in her way. Dwelling on a perspective of deficit rather than abundance. So now I go to bed on time because when I do it means I get to feel well rested and excited to start my day. I wake up on time and put on the outfit I chose the night before because I know now how to help myself out. I read a book on the train. When I arrive to my office I fill all my water bottles, drink plenty with my vitamins, and sit for meditation before doing affirmations, sipping my mushroom coffee. This was not easy. I needed to find my formula. Separate from mindset and perspective was also physical wellness, self-love, self-worth, and mental health. I love myself so fully now. I'm constantly learning and growing.
