Scotland, Shanghai, Sydney: Dusted off the kilt (one of my two) yesterday to spice up a co-presentation. And celebrate & remember Scots* I was part of a Symposium celebrating the bicentenary of camellias being introduced into the living collections of Sydney Botanic Garden. Kicked off by a short talk and guided walks around some of the garden's camellia species, hybrid & cultivar collection. Expertly done by Rosemary Roberts, Ambiga Devy, Elizabeth Pidd & Barbara Yates. Assisted by IT guru Joe Bidwell. * It was Scottish soldier Charles Fraser - first superintendent of SBG who planted the first ones here in 1823 (C. japonica 'Alba', 'Rubra Plena' and tea, (then called Thea viridis, now Camellia sinensis). C/o Lady Brisbane and John Reeves of the English East India Co. And Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune, who in the 1840s smuggled tea seeds, plants and know-how on cultivation, curing, fermentation and production out of China via Shanghai, seeding the British plantations of Nn. MEET US MONDAY Meet Joseph Myatt (1772-1855) - our forefather & name giver to our reserve wine. Joseph Myatt was a market gardener 🌱 famous for his development of a number of strawberry varietals 🍓 & popularising rhubarb as a dessert 🥧 (then only used for medicinal purposes). His work was recognised by the Horticultural Society of London (his trophies can be viewed at cellar door) & a letter of commendation from the Prince Consort for the excellence of his strawberries leading Queen Victoria to commission the above portrait. Myatt's Field park still stands today as a public reserve in Camberwell, South London. 📷 Peter Miller To commemorate the pioneer horticultural work of the Myatt family we name the best blend of the vintage Joseph Myatt Reserve. The label is only used in years the winemakers deem the quality is good enough to create a reserve. The current release is 2018 & will be available for tasting this weekend 🍷

La sua figura è circondata da fascino, quei sui viaggi in Cina hanno cambiato per sempre non solo le abitudini degli occidentali mettendo fine al monopolio cinese del tè, ma anche modificato gli aspetti dei nostri giardini con l’introduzione di nuove varietà botaniche. Robert Fortune è stato un botanico scozzese, che negli anni 40 del 1800 fu mandato in Cina, il regno dei fiori e del tè, dall’Horticultural Society of London con lo scopo di raccogliere semi e piante vive di tipo decorativo o utile non ancora coltivate in Gran Bretagna e ottenere informazioni sull’agricoltura e sul giardinaggio. “La via del tè” è il resoconto, scritto dallo stesso Fortune, del suo viaggio in Cina, nel 1848, a cinque anni di distanza dal primo. Il distretto che Robert Fortune vuole raggiungere è Hwuy-chow che dista più di 200 chilometri dal porto di Shangai, andando verso l’entroterra, regione proibita per gli occidentali, ma preziosa per le piante di tè verde più raffinate in commercio. Intraprende il pericoloso viaggio insieme a due uomini cinesi conoscitori dei luoghi, pagati profumatamente, e abbandonando i suoi costumi inglesi per adottare quelli del posto, rasandosi la testa e attaccandosi un finto codino. Anche se l’obiettivo finale del viaggio è il tè, Robert Fortune nel suo “diario” coglie l’opportunità per farci conoscere da vicino un popolo lontanissimo, capire le loro abitudini e apprezzarle, farci viaggiare - come nei migliori romanzi di avventura tanto famosi all’epoca – in terre mai prima di allora esplorate, impenetrabili e pericolose. Spesso entriamo in magnifici giardini, descritti come dei paradisi in terra, dove Fortune “scopre” delle meraviglie botaniche. “La via del tè” diviene così non solo un resoconto di viaggio, ma anche un testo di botanica ed etnologia, un vero documento storico e scientifico da cui attingere, che si legge con la voracità di un romanzo e l’incredulità della scoperta.
