Podophylum peltatum (Berberidaceae) - Mayapple The lovely flower of Mayapple is one that I would definitely stop to admire. Feels like finding a treasure to take a peak under those umbrella like leaves and see a wide open, single white flower, with big yellow elongated anthers . A reproductive Mayapple will have two leaves . If you find a plant with only one leaf , it will be a juvenile one that won’t produce a flower until next year , when it has enough energy stored in its rhizome to do so. However, like we have all learned by now , there is no “never “ or “always “ in nature . This Mayapple in the photo had a single leave and produced a flower! 😃 . >>swipe to see the prove. The shape of that leave, is the one of a Mayapple plant that carries two leaves, so probably got damaged and dropped while developing. I didn’t see any scar though. It's deciduous beech - or 'fagus' - time! The crinkled leaves of this Tassie icon is currently transforming the landscape into brilliant autumnal colours, before it descends into 'hibernation' for our cold season. The fagus is a paleoendemic - that is, an ancient species that was once widespread across the whole landscape, way back when Tassie was still connected to Antarctica (it's been found in the fossil record from 80 million years ago)! Malaxis calophylla - a synonym of Crepidium calophyllum, but which sounds way cooler. While it still just denotes that the leaves are “smooth” and pliable, it does evoke something more reminiscent of the common name for the genus, the Adder’s Mouth orchids. This species is native to wet tropical forests of Southeast Asia, and grown in lower light, has fantastic pleated leaves splashed with coffee-colored blotches and cream streaks (this one’s been receiving a lot of light and so is itself slightly more luminous, but less compelling). Eventually I’ll transfer it to a dimmer planted tank to let its true colors show through. There’s been some confusion about this genus’ taxonomic designation, to say the least - to say the most, it’s nothing short of a labyrinthine meander through an akashic library of now-moldering dried and pressed specimens (further removed beyond the veil of this material plane with their ascension and projection into the virtual ether of the internet), a nights-long scrutiny of antiquated handwritten treatises and treatments recorded in archaic scripts, chronicling the meticulous transference of species from branch to twig of the Tree of Life and back again like the repetitive steps of a slow unending dance in which guests’ hands pass from partner to partner, while the echoes of monotonous intonations of forgotten names, nearly incantations, resonate like bells striking the hour or a herald announcing the arrival of newly stationed and titled guests through the long and resounding halls of a once-stately mansion, now inhabited by specters of long-dead and phantasmal botanists locked between the succor of their living passion and the timelessness of their self-imposed imprisonment, only able, in the undeath of their transcriptions, to repeat infinitely the names and shapes of plants which outlived them - vivid sweet-scented flowers and soft alluring foliage, those creatures made of the essence of life, now haunting the dead - the orchids of the world they once knew, lived, and died for. A few of the terrific plants found along my AFNM excursion of a couple days ago. These include the largest perfect (all heads alive/undamaged) Echinocereus yavapaiensis (perhaps the second largest perfect Echinocereus of any kind) I have ever laid eyes upon. Also spotted were three new Agave parryi cultivate sites, and a solitary and entirely unique agave near the center of an extensive archaeological site, which presents as a possible domesticate. Farmed Agave domesticates were created as cultivars and pit roasted, while A. parryi was relocated and cultivated, possibly as a source of pulque. 1. E. yavapaiensis w/300-400 heads 2.
