Kiến trúc Gothic xuất hiện tại châu Âu từ thế kỉ XII đến XVI, tiếp theo kiến trúc Romanesque và đi trước kiến trúc Phục hưng. Phong cách này đối lập sự đơn giản của kiến trúc cổ điển, với nhiều mái nhọn vút cao, cửa sổ vòm, những bức tượng cẩm thạch tuyệt mỹ. Dù công trình đồ sộ nhưng hình dạng, đường nét, tỉ lệ hài hoà của mái, cột, cửa,… mang đến vẻ thanh thoát, tinh tế. Kiến trúc Gothic thể hiện rõ nhất và đẹp nhất trong các nhà thờ lớn, thánh đường và một số công trình dân dụng. Nhiều mẫu kiến trúc nhà thờ còn lại đến ngày nay, mà trong số chúng, ngay những công trình nhỏ nhất cũng mang vẻ đẹp đặc trưng, vì không có hai công trình kiến trúc Gothic nào lại giống hệt nhau. Renzo Piano là một trong những kiến trúc sư hàng đầu thế giới. Sinh ra tại Genova trong một gia đình làm nghề xây dựng, sau khi tốt nghiệp Bách khoa Milan, ông bắt đầu hoạt động thiết kế, chuyên về thể nghiệm vật liệu và kĩ thuật mới. Giải thưởng quốc tế đầu tiên mà ông nhận được dành cho bản thiết kế Trung tâm Georges Pompidou tại Paris vào năm 1971. Khi mới ngoài 30 tuổi, Renzo Piano đã kí kết một dự án cùng Richard Rogers, đánh bại nhiều đối thủ với một ý tưởng táo bạo trong thời kì đó, và kết quả của sự cộng tác này là một công trình nằm giữa trái tim thủ đô nước Pháp. Một dự án lớn khác của Piano là cấu trúc lại Cảng cổ của Genova qua hai giai đoạn, thay đổi triệt để bộ mặt một khu vực lịch sử của thành phố.
