I see the urban Indian architects are trying to avoid colors to ensure that their designs appear more 'modern' or western. Colourlessness (without significance or socio-cultural understanding) doesn't go with Indian ethos. Being a #Colorforward nation, color plays a crucial role in our land to convey meanings. Letโs take the example of Vellai Gopuram (White tower) of Srirangam. It was the year 1323 CE. Srirangam was attacked by the Delhi Sultanate during the Tamil month of Vaikasi. Nearly, 12,000 residents of Srirangam island had laid down their lives fighting to protect the temple. The forces attacked the temple and Lord Ranganatha's jewels and the temple gold were taken away. The forces also wanted to seize the murti of Vishnu. They searched for the murti but the Vaishnavite Acharya, Pillailokacharya had taken the murti away and fled to Madurai. (The murti of Vishnu, called Namperumal that left Srirangam in 1323 returned back only in 1371). Unable to locate the murti, the Sultanate forces killed the temple authorities and later launched a massive hunt for Pillailokacharya and Namperumal. Fearing that the forces would capture the Acharya and the idol, Vellayi, a temple dancer performed a dance before the commander of the forces thus gaining time for Pillailokacharya to escape with the image. Her dance lasted for hours together and finally she took the commander to the eastern gopuram and pushed him down. After killing him, Vellayi jumped to her death from the tower of the eastern entrance chanting the name of Ranganathar. Hailing Vellayi's sacrifice, the chief of Vijayanagara forces, Kempanna, who drove away the Sultanate forces, named the tower after her. The gopuram continues to be painted white in her memory and now called as Vellai Gopuram. White is depicted as the color of sacrifice, divinity, death and non-attachment in India. These gestures indicate that the individual is unarmed, respectful, and submitting oneself with humbleness. Different types of Pranamam with varied meanings and implications are practiced across the nation and neighboring countries like Nepal and Indonesia. There's a slight difference in the fundamental understanding of Pranama and Namaskaaram. While Pranama is derived from the Sanskrit word Pra (before) and Anama (bending/bowing), Namaste (folded hands with a slight bow) is a form of greeting which is an Anjali Mudra, and the standing form of Namaskaaram is called Pranaamasana. It's time we incorporate these indigenous gestures in our corporate culture and practice as a form of greeting and respect, replacing the handshake. This photo I took yesterday morning in Chennai where the work of the metro rail transport system is in progress ๐ง. I was laughing at the safety warning written on this construction machine. ***"Keep away from swing area"*** written in English! Most of the construction workers in Chennai are either from eastern India (Bengal / Odhissa/ Bihar) or UP, and of course their knowledge of English might be miniscule keeping in mind their literacy. It is very clear that the warning was not written to make them understand the danger of being near to the swinging part of the machine but only to fulfill the required compliance! I wonder, when our design schools will start to imbibe the real education of design that can impact #ninetypercent. #designmatters #Indiamatters

But in Australia, the teacher can be a strategist, president of an association and even can lead a rescue mission even in a country that's not his motherland! Australian Professor Arnold Dix, President of the Internation tunneling association rushed to India, worked 24/7 to spearhead the rescue operation in challenging conditions at this age. He treated those stuck workers like they are his own sons, kept talking to them, reassuring them. Prayed with the locals for them. On 7thย of November 2023, a historic Govt. of Indiaโs #Gazetteย been released which will now allow foreign universities to open Campuses in India.ย This will allow all internationally reputed design colleges/ universities also to set up campuses in India. Why India? 1. Because India and many south Asian nations are providing most of the students in these universities across the globe, specially in UK and USA. 2. Higher education is where India spendsย 17.3% of the total annual household consumption expenditure. 3. With highest young population (more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35), India indeed is a lucrative market for these universities. But, will it impact the design education eco-system in India? Of course yes! Here is my foresight on how this will forever change the quality of design education in a positive way: 1.ย ย ย ย This will allow a fair play ground to all the design institutes (Indian and campuses of foreign universities) and by default will enhance/ alter the quality of pedagogy, deliverable, infrastructures etc in design education of this nation. 2.ย ย ย ย ย The Indian design institutes need to upgrade themselves at per the international level to stay relevant. The situation will be the sam as the shift of pre-economic liberalization era (where we had only 2 TV channels) to post the liberalizati era (where a plethora of channels are offered and consumer has the liberty to choose among the best). 3.ย ย ย ย This will enable Indian students to remain in India and receive the international quality education they deserve. This gazette also allows the foreign universities to recruit professors from abroad, which is good to upgrade the quality of academicians in India and the quality of research papers published in the domain of design. 4.ย ย ย ย Those institutes who are now enjoying monopoly in the domain of design simply because of brand recall value (and date of establishment) need to roll up their sleeves or become fossilized soon. 5.ย ย ย ย The academicians can expect a better pay package, career growth, better learning environment, appreciation of their achievements, scope to of growth. #IndiaMatters

A cutting chai (smaller cup of tea) is an Integral part of India's socio-cultural lifestyle. We grew up with the idea of making most of the products affordable (to all), reachable (to all), accessible (anywhere) and mindfully consumable. Right from cutting chai, mobile recharge in Rs.10, Ra.5 Shampoo sachets to the affordable small packet of every daily life product hanging in rows (in almost all roadside shops), the concept of #CapsuleConsumpsion makes this country unique. Consuming in measured quantity indeed adds to a sustainable life but these little consumptions also add to huge sales keeping in mind the size of our population. Therefore, in my opinion, the capsule Consumption should also be implemented in education where an individual can study how much ever he/ she wants (from a wide variety of subject offerings) at an affordable cost and get a complition certificate till that level to start again whenever possible. Especially at school level, because many subjects we learnt spending time in our prime age (10 to 18 years) is of no use in daily life (ie. logarithm in math, many parts of physics chemistry and geography, dissection of cockroach and frogs in bio science etc.) unless one specializes in that stream or knowingly implements the learning. Recently, America returned 150 ancient idols to India, after hon. prime minister's visit. It is indeed a great start, a Ghar Wapsi (return to home). However, I have six major concerns/ suggestions: 1. This is only the tip of an iceberg. In US alone thousands of such stolen/ smuggled/ illegally acquired ancient treasures are kept. Much more are there in UK (should be ashamed of their colonial loot!), Germany, France etc. Hence a separate ministry (treasure recovery from other lands) should be established to bring them back which must work to ensure that every piece is back home. If sports can have a separate ministry, why not treasure recovery! 2. Govt. should have very strict law and exemplary punishments for those smugglers who sell their own treasure! Hanging till death must be the fitting punishment for selling gods! 3. We should have the right policy, infrastructure, maintenance and world class museums to take care of these treasures. Otherwise, after returning home, these will be again sold off from the backdoor by corrupted officials. There should be transparency and the public should be able to trace the movement of each treasure via a govt. portal. even Blockchain enabled RFID tagging system can be incorporated 4. We really need an 'IndiaPedia' (any other name please) to build a web resource centre to read and learn more about our treasures. The only tool that can protect these excuisit pieces is awareness, knowledge and pride. 5. Museumology/ curation and restoration should be taught in major universities so that we get enough skilled human resources to maintain these. 6. Cutting edge tech companies must involve themselves to create the best metaverse experience around each piece of these artefacts. Universities and colleges must add these as part of their curriculum through ed-tech enabled classrooms. Please suggest any other crucial points that I have missed. #Indiamatters #treasure

Tea production started in India when a Scottish Mandarin smuggled a tea plant to India from China (through a silk caravan)! This was done to increase the tea supply to England from India and also to end the monopoly of China. However, China has been drinking tea for 5000 years. The first British led commercial tea plantation in India was established in 1836 in Chabua in Upper Assam. Today, post independence, India has 43,293 tea gardens (source: Tea board of India), with exclusive origins such as Darjeeling tea, Assam tea and Nilgiri tea.
