It has been reported that 60 companies are responsible for half of all plastics worldwide, of which a handful of big brands have been found to be the original source of a quarter of all plastic pollution globally. Coca-Cola tops the list of these companies. This finding comes from a five-year international study conducted by Australian CSIRO scientists, in which nearly two million items of waste were surveyed across 84 countries. -> On Wednesday we finally returned home from our great adventure of the Hawaiian Islands. 🙂 I already posted a bit of our cleanups over there, I will be putting together a post of our adventures once I go through the hundreds 🤦🏻♂️ of pictures. 🤣 Anyway, I hit the ground running as the day after arrival I had a VA medical appointment at Eagle Square in Providence. Once the appointment was over I figured it was a good idea to do a little something up in that neck of the woods… So I continued along the Woonasquatucket River where years of plastic debris had collected along the banks. Autour d'un sujet de société et de questions collectives, elle mène une conversation élargie avec son environnement. Ce livre est truffé de citations et de références éclectiques, issues de la littérature, de la poésie, du cinéma, de la photographie, de la politique, des sciences médicales, etc... Il peut donc être lu d'un point de vue poétique, social ou politique, puisqu'il aborde tous les aspects soulignés par le mot "Respirer". Dans cet essai, son troisième publié dans la petite collection Verdier de livres jaunes, elle tire le fil le plus intime, mais aussi celui qui est devenu la préoccupation de nous tous, qui habitons désormais une terre irrespirable. Elle y confie ses essoufflements les plus intimes mais aussi les plus collectifs. Avec ce livre, elle ne prétend pas nous enseigner quoi que ce soit, mais plutôt synthétiser les informations et diagnostiquer les inflammations dont souffrent nos membranes et celles de la Terre. Elle espère ouvrir une multitude de portes au courage, à la solidarité et à la beauté, et donner un peu d'air à la prose et à la pensée. Elle est convaincue de notre responsabilité dans la manière dont nous parlons et communiquons. Nous plantons la parole, nous la mettons en circulation, et cela peut rendre nos milieux de vie plus respirables ou, au contraire, irrespirables. « La façon dont la parole se répand dans le monde fait ses lignes entre nous et avec tout le reste, y met de l’air ou le pollue un peu plus, c’est ce qui rend la vie respirable, c’est-à-dire très exactement fraternelle, ou pas du tout. » Je ne lis pas beaucoup d'essais (je devrais !) mais j'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à lire ce livre qui, à mes yeux, est un véritable tour de force : l'écriture est plaisante, efficace et fluide.
