ᵃᵈ If you're visiting Crete, the island of Spinalonga is a must-see ⛵️ This little island on the coast of Elounda/Agios Nikolaos is not only absolutely stunning (accessed by boat through crystal clear waters) but also steeped in a saddening yet fascinating history. Originally used as a fortress in the Venetian/Ottoman war, at the beginning of the 1900s it became home to over 1000 people suffering with leprosy, with nowhere else to go. Today, you can walk around the cobbled streets and view the forts, as well as old houses, chapels, shops and cafes that the leper colony built for their lives here on the island. If you’re looking for a rather luxurious spot in Crete then I can wholeheartedly recommend checking out @kingminos_retreat. I’m not usually a big hotel kinda girl (spot the campervanner 😂) but this could have me changing my mind. What a treat! From the huge lobby and outdoor courtyard to chill and have a drink, to the gorgeous pool area with Bali beds and a pool bar doing a lengthy list of cocktails as well as light lunches, I was pretty won over before we even got to the rooms. But oh my days. The ordinary rooms are pretty spacious, but they have a whole load of rooms with jacuzzis and private pools - I was lucky enough to try the latter and may never want to go back to a normal room… Perfect for an early morning dip, or to chill out next to in the evening. The rooms were beautifully appointed - hairdryer, robes, coffee machine, fridge, plenty of sockets (because isn’t it annoying when there aren’t enough), and big bathrooms with lovely walk in rainfall showers. It doesn’t stop there - there are two restaurants, one buffet and one a la Carte, and the breakfast choice was great (including an omelette station which basically had me hooked). There’s a gym that is one of the better kitted out hotel gyms I’ve been to, as well as a spa that I didnt try but would happily go back for! The whole place was spotless, the staff helpful, and it’s in a good location - 50m from the beach and east distance to the nearest town. Basically if I was going to do a hotel holiday, I’d be booking here like a shot. And handily, you can book via @jet2pics if you prefer a package, or direct if you’re planning your own trip to Crete. Day 4 and our final day in Crete was another epic one with @jet2pics and @incredible_crete (ad/presstrip) I got up early to catch sunrise on the beach which was a stunner. After breakfast we made our way to Elounda, stopping en route at Agios Nikolaos (3) to check out the views. (1,3,4) From Elounda we took a short boat ride to the island of Spinalonga and explored the ruins of the fortress and settlement. The island was once a Venetian stronghold before being taken over by the Turks. Then from 1904-1957 it was home to Greece’s leper population who were imprisoned there. If you’ve read Victoria Hislop’s book ‘The Island’ it’s based on Spinalonga. From there we had a brief stop at the Lake of Agios Nikolaos (6) and then a look around the new Archaeological Museum (7). 8&9 was a fabulous olive oil tasting with olive oil sommelier Michalis from @cretan_ark at @kokolakisfamily.gr olive oil mill. We tasted 3 very different olive oils and had an unforgettably good lunch. Stay tuned for a dedicated post - it warrants it! 🫒 Our final meal on Crete was at nearby @taverna_xristinis kristinis where we were treated to delicious slouvaki, farm salad, cheeses and other traditional Greek dishes in the taverna that opened in 1925. It seems impossible that just 3 days ago, I was sitting under the shade of an olive tree, in an olive grove, enjoying these beautifully prepared dishes, all created by @cretan_ark on the family run olive farm @kokolakisfamily.gr From the creamy vegetable velouté soup, with its hidden surprise of traditional Cretan soft cheese, to the “Monastery Bread” topped with smoked pork, caramelised onions and sun-dried tomatoes…..each dish was adorned with a flourish of liquid gold, Cretan olive oil. We started this al fresco feast by joining in with an olive oil tasting workshop. The olive oil tasting experience comprised: A visit to the olive mill A walk in an olive grove Olive oil tasting Traditional cretan treats As the Kokolakis family say: “The olive tree, the cretan’s land sacred tree. KISSING GOODBYE TO CRETE [Ad-Invite] The final day in Crete was a busy but magical one. A boat trip to the island of Spinalonga, built as a sea fortress and later a leper colony. A beautiful place with glorious views out to bright blue water, and a history tinged with sadness. Then a quick whistle stop tour through Agios Nikolaos and its pretty lake, plus its new archaeology museum, before an olive oil tasting with @cretan_ark under the olive trees at @kokolakisfamily.gr olive mill along with a pairing of some dishes finished with some of Crete’s best olive oils. Final stop was a traditional lunch at @taverna_xristinis with obligatory souvlaki. Because have you even been to Greece if you haven’t had them? Safe to say we left Crete full, happy and all vowing to return. I have to admit, I knew it would be good but I didn’t know HOW good. It’s a beautiful island with so so much to do, whether you’re a culture vulture, a beach babe, or a food fan, along with all sorts in between. The people are amazingly hospitable and the weather is glorious, even in October, so it’s the perfect place for an autumn break. Day four of my odyssey to the magical island of Crete with Jet2 and the Cretan Tourist Board….. ……pausing to take a photo of Agios Nikolaos from a hilltop, the heat seemed to envelop around us, with the sun suspended over a sparkling diamond filled Aegean sea. We were in our way to visit the island of Spinalonga, made famous in recent times by Victoria Hislop’s book “The Island”. An island with a fascinating and ancient history, probably most well known as being a leper colony between 1903 and 1957, the island was fortified during the Venetian occupation, and was one of the last places to fall when the Ottomans invaded. This barren island of 85 acres is now one of the most popular places to visit in Crete. We arrived by boat, skimming over turquoise seas with a cooling wind refreshing us. On disembarking, our guide took us on a circular walk around the island, telling us about the island’s rich history as we walked. Looking into the clear, crystal clear waters, fringed by prickly pears, it was was difficult to comprehend how dismal it would have been to have arrived on this island, had you’d been banished as a leper. FRIDAY WITH A FULL HEART [Ad-Invite] Feel kinda guilty if I’m honest - what a week! But sharing because you guys love food and travel as much as I do and yesterday was another day packed with all the fun in beautiful Crete. From a hike up to Zeus’ Cave above the Lassithi Plateau followed by cheese pies and honey with fresh juice, to learning to make traditional Cretan pottery and a wine tasting with @agelakis_winery 🍷. A bit of downtime to enjoy the lovely @kingminos_retreat and then dinner at a beautiful taverna up in Old Hersonnisos. Everything from stuffed courgette flowers and homemade tzatziki to fresh sardines, octopus and calamari. All accompanied with many a laugh and giggle with my partners in crime @thetravelbunny @lavenderandlovage @annac42 and @ashleighthorpe88 - we may start a new band with Zeus, who knows 🤷♀️ If this week has reminded me of anything it’s to never get bored of every little moment of joy, whether it’s in beautiful places like this, or even at home right under your nose. Day 3 in Crete with Jet2…… ……after a steep mountain climb up to Zeus’s Cave (Diktaion Andron) in the Lassithi Plateau, we visited a traditional pottery, a local winery for wine tasting, then back to the hotel for “pool time” before going out for dinner in old Hersonissos, at the delightful taverna, “Stou Stereou homemade food”. When I say dinner, what I really mean is a Cretan feast! We were treated to local bread, grass green olives, garlicky tzatziki, Kalitsounia (little pies), fava beans in olive oil, steamed greens, stuffed courgette flowers, dolmades, grilled sardines, whitebait, calamari and hand cut chips. We sat outside, in the balmy October evening, with lights twinkling all around us, wine glasses chinking and the gentle hum of chatter and laughter. CRETE CONTINUED [Ad-Invite] Day 2 of the epic Crete trip with @jet2pics and @incredible_crete was a packed one full of history, culture and general giggles with the fab @thetravelbunny @lavenderandlovage @annac42 @ashleighthorpe88. Starting (after a lovely workout and slap-up hotel brekkie) at the impressive Knossos Palace and all its archeological wonders from the ancient Minoan civilisation, a trip up to the traditional Cretan village of Archanes for a wander and a delightful traditional lunch, then on to capital Heraklion for more history at the Archeological Museum, then a wander around the city (which I will forever be mocked by these guys for calling ‘hip-hop-and-happening’) before a knockout dinner at @peskesi in Heraklion, an amazing farm to table restaurant in the city. Day two of my trip to Crete with Jet2 was simply amazing….. ……from my traditional Cretan breakfast, a magical trip to Knossos and more authentic local food, to a truly inspiring visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and a simply sumptuous dinner at another authentic Cretan restaurant, it’s been a day of discovery and joy. October is the perfect time to visit this unique Greek island - the weather is still warm (but not too hot), there’s less crowds, the local food is delectable, there’s plenty of amazing places to visit and you will be welcomed with open arms, as the hospitality is exceptional. I’ve had the most memorable day, visiting ancient places I’ve only ever read of before now. Knossos was a major centre of the Minoan civilisation, and is known for its association with the Greek myth of Theseus and the minotaur. Then a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion was the historical icing on the cake. Here I saw a plethora of exquisite pottery, jewellery, cooking utensils, mosaics and frescos that were all discovered in Knossos and other areas of archaeological interest in Crete. PINCH-ME MOMENT [Ad-Invite] Ten years ago I started a food blog. I was miserable at work, a bit lost, and all I wanted to do was write. Jamie suggested I start a blog to help my head and give me a bit of focus so I started writing about one of my passions - food. It was a hobby, it kind of still is, but as the years have gone on it’s tied more and more into my day job as a journalist. I like to think it’s helped people, whether that’s finding places to eat, helping businesses when they need a bit of promotion, or maybe just a bit of escapism and entertainment when you need it most. It’s a labour of love for me - something that doesn’t really earn money but that I’ve poured too much into to ever stop. I’ve been tempted at times - but I just can’t bring myself to. So… ten years since I started, to be invited on the most glorious trip to Crete with @jet2pics and @incredible_crete and not as a journalist, but as a blogger, feels like a bit of a well done and a reminder that if you stick at stuff, hard work really does pay off. We’re here exploring this beautiful island and everything it has to offer and I’m in the presence of some wonderful bloggers (@lavenderandlovage @thetravelbunny @annac42 )who I know pour as much heart and soul into what they do as I do. We spent the first day joyfully mooching round the beautiful @kingminos_retreat, before heading into the hills to Fourni where @fourni_horses took us on a late afternoon ride up to meet a beekeeper and learn all about Cretan honey, before a dusk ride back and then dinner at Platanos, a wonderful authentic restaurant where we were served owner Maria’s dream food of homemade dishes using the freshest local ingredients she can find. Day one of a fabulous holiday in Crete with Jet2. We’re staying at the King Minos Retreat Resort & Spa, in Hersonissos. This beautifully appointed, stylish and tranquil hotel has sea and Mountain View’s and my room even has its own private swimming pool. We dined on Greek food in the pool bar at lunchtime, before heading out to Fourni, for some horse riding and the opportunity to meet a local beekeeper. We were met by EUGENIA AND GEORGE, the owners of Fouri Horses, who talked us through what we’d be doing before we set off for our ride through the stunning Cretan countryside. Halfway round, we tethered the horses in the shade of an old olive grove, and watched and learned about beekeeping, as well as having the chance to hold the frames, complete with bees and honey. After a gentle hack back, we were treated to some fresh honey, dripping from the honeycomb, whilst the sun set over the mountains creating a golden glow over the landscape. Our first day ended with a delectable Cretan feast at the Platanos Taverna…..here we were treated to numerous small plates of dips, grilled vegetables, salad, toasted village bread, pork in wine sauce, beef stifado, pork with leeks and chicken cooked with tomatoes and allspice - all cooked by Maria and using local produce. Maria told us it was her dream to be able to cook typical Cretan food, with all the ingredients coming from within 5 to 6 miles of the village.
