Kegel’s Inn, West Allis, WI. A soda shop from 1924, with other spots in the block rented to a tailor, an ice cream parlor, and others. From 1927 the soda shop also offered ‘light lunch.’ It was an open secret they made booze in the cellar. The secret room is still there; back then it was controlled by trap door from a button behind the bar. Mrs Kegel (the family wasn’t German but Slovene) also hid booze in her capacious dresses. They were raided by Prohibition agents in 1927 but seemed to suffer no consequences. (Fancy that.) When Prohibition ended the family knocked the shops together and opened an inn. The ad for the grand opening trumpets ‘a reproduction of English design,’ but they hired German-born Peter Gries for the murals. The ones in the bar were done by 1933; the rest followed through 1945. (Fancy *that.*) Still run by the same family, despite the current boss’s granddad being terrible with money. Now one of only three (!) traditional German restaurants left in the area, it’s delicious, unpretentious, and affordable. #kegelsinn #milwaukee #mke #lovemke

A fry above at Wegner’s St. Martins Inn! Holding true to Wisconsin values in this moderately sized bar atmosphere with cold drinks and great food, it’s something to try. The fry arrived with 4 pieces of fluffy fried fish. The haddock was cooked properly and the batter had a crispy exterior with a perfect blend of flavors. The crispiness was followed by an excellent cake-like interior offering a perfect symphony of flavor. The tartar was traditional but distinguished, and well balanced. The plate demonstrated that all meals were made with thought. There is a side of sweet carrot coleslaw which cleanses the palate making you want another bite of haddock. The service was well distributed among the full tables. Overall the experience was positive. Fry Rating: 8.5

Kegels Inn…. WOW. Our only regret is that we didn’t come here sooner. The exterior has an old hometown feel and the inside feels like your dining in Germany. It is a classic institution that has been around since prohibition era. If you love fish fry’s then this is in the top tier. The batter was o soo crispy which complimented the delicate flavors the fresh cod had to offer. The potato pancakes were delightful. They had a crispy outside with a soft inside and came with apple sauce. Tartar sauce was made right with a subtle sweetness. We enjoyed the coleslaw too, it was just the right amount of creamy with a good crunch that was not aggressive. @kegelsinn is a must try. Fry Rating: 9.1

Apparently when German & Polish Catholic immigrants settled in Milwaukee in the 1860’s, they began the tradition of the Friday Fish Fry. @kegelsinn opened in the 1920’s with a beer garden & German cuisine. I’m way behind in visiting certain local institutions. In fact, when I first moved to the Eastside, I thought Wolski’s was a nuisance property. “IDK what Wolski’s is, but A LOT of people worked to close that place...and then they had bumper stickers made.” 🤦🏾♀️ Anywho, today marks my first visit to local fave, Kegel’s Inn. I sat outside by a fire pit under string lights to enjoy a classic Friday fish fry alongside crunchy, oniony potato pancakes with cinnamony applesauce.
