What a joy to have with us Marissa Maren Baragar, who is with Busan Apparel Group, as well as being an RG Alumni and global RG board member. Marissa’s teaching session was both insightful and authentic. She shared a very practical approach to embody Gospel-Centered Leadership in today’s workplace via the acrynim LEAD: Lower self, Elevate truth, Abide in Chirst, Disciple Others. It was refreshing to hear that for someone with her years of experience and leadership position, there are still moments when she falls short and how she allows that experience to refine her. Great reminder that the sanctification process is continuous and that none of us are “there yet.” More importantly, Marissa’s example of leadership is closely intimate and submitted unto the authority of Christ bringing deep meaning to daily tasks and boardroom conversations. This past weekend we had the RG Malaysia Cities Gathering in KL. On Friday evening, cohort members from Penang and KL as well as some of our alumni from past years came together for an evening of fellowship to kick off the weekend. We had a RG Alumni Panel session where Mel T interviewed Adelyn and Clarice (RG Alumni) on some of their experiences during and since being part of the cohort. We also had some community building exercises, including one where we studied a variety of different types of trees in different “seasons” and stages and chose one that depicted we are individually in our journey- either at work or in our personal lives. Resource Global Malaysia started its first official cohort in Kuala Lumpur over 3 years ago, in January 2020. Only earlier this year in 2023 was the newest cohort in Penang added. Sarah (current KL cohort member and mentee on left) is originally from a culinary background, now working in the pharmaceutical industry as a product specialist. She is daughter to one mother, mother to one cat. Regarding her mentoring relationship, Sarah shares "it’s been an interesting journey with Trixie, from completely different working backgrounds to finding many things in common - in our values and our families. Trixie has been has been encouraging, caring and supportive. I’m very grateful for her like-minded contemplative character." We celebrate a variety of small business start ups and social enterprises represented by our current and past cohort members. A few of them held table displays at the recent Kingdom Disconnect event in KL. Joash, Charissa and Zeson from this year's Penang Cohort are founders of Wings @wings.rope, with a mission to inspire an active lifestyle and healthy community through freestyle jump rope. Ian from this year's KL Cohort has a new start up called Holland's Fries @hollandsfries now in Bukit Bintang. Grace Sim, 2021 Cohort Alumni, started up Morlively morlively , a tea company founded to restore and uplift the wellbeing of the society and the Mother Earth by using naturally energizing, nutrient-rich, sustainable plants. Morlively wants to eliminate poverty by working with refugees and marginalised people groups in Malaysia. Earlier this month we had the privilege of hearing from Steve Hanlon, who founded @rojakculture along with his wife Trixie, a social enterprise aimed at building friendship among racially diverse Malaysians. To that end they launched The Lepak Game in 2016 and also run workshops on the topic of multicultural community building. We had a good session discussing the definition of race, some of the history and affects of colonialism, including here in Malaysia, and then what God's view and call to us as believers is. Daniel (mentee - on left) has been in public service the past 15 years, and is currently attached to MITI. He finds meaning and fulfillment in helping others, as well as believes that God has called him to a life of servant hood. Yet, the question lingers - is there more to this life? When not contemplating on life’s meaning, he enjoys connecting over coffee at the local cafe. Daniel shares, “The pertinent conversations emanating from Resource Global has given me clarity that while my passion and giftings are in alignment, God has greater things in store for me. My identity is not defined by my vocation. It is marked by the impact and glory it brings to Him." Dato' Selwyn (mentor- on right) is a retired diplomat and Ambassador from Malaysia, currently in legal practice. He serves on the RG Malaysia Advisory Board as well as mentoring. He believes in seeing the next generation of leaders in Malaysia built up. Daniel says, " I have been blessed by Dato’ Selwyn’s guidance, wisdom and advice in shining light on future possibilities, having himself navigated the path of public service successfully. For that, my life has been positively impacted and forever changed. Danielle is committed to making a positive impact in the field of clinical research by contributing to the research of infectious diseases to diagnose and improve the lives of patients. Mentor Julee (left) has been a mentor with Resource Global for the past 3 years and works in the field of marketing for a global non profit. Julee is organized and loves to read, and her friendliness is contagious, making her an easy person to open up to and share with. Danielle says of Julee: “She has encouraged me to focus on the skills I’ve gained from my study and to apply them to any role that I come across-this is very helpful. I am more open and flexible in what jobs/roles I can do. At the same time, being able to surrender to God and let Him use me whenever I go.
