In the latest online and print issue of @ArchRecordMag, @Mattyhick80 delves into the cultural anchors that define @LittleVillageDetroit, including @theShepherdDetroit, @LANTERNDetroit, @LouisBuhl, @ALEODetroit, @StatonYardsDetroit, and more. Hickman writes “Opening this month as an anchor project of the Little Village plan developed by @Peterson_Rich_Office and multidisciplinary design firm @OSD_NYC is #theShepherdDetroit, a multifaceted arts space housed within the former Good Shepherd Church. Inserted into the light-filled space are two white-cube galleries hosting  #theShepherdDetroit inaugural exhibition, a survey of late artist @CharlesMcGeeStudio. At 1,200 square feet, the main volume, steel-framed and finished in textured plaster, is situated in the central nave, punctured by an oculus that provides views up to the church’s soaring, vaulted ceiling. Framing the oculus is a newly created mezzanine level providing flexible programming space." #theShepherdDetroit #LittleVillageDetroit #LibraryStreetCollective Photo by @jasonkeenco

“The church’s other transept has been reimagined for a branch location of the @BlackArtLibrary curated by Detroit arts-educator @AsmaaWalton. Little Village is a cultural corridor fostering an inclusive community centered around the arts in Detroit. There is a collective interest in new typologies that blur the boundaries between public and private space, resulting in a revitalized neighborhood that is accessible to all. A budding and vibrant fabric of the artistic landscape in the city, Little Village’s mission uses art as a medium for both inspiration and creativity. #LittleVillage #theShepherdDetroit #LittleVillageDetroit

As announced recently, @LibraryStreetCollective has acquired a long-vacant industrial building at 9301 Kercheval Avenue—previously home to a commercial bakery and warehouse—and is transforming it into #LANTERNDetroit, a multifaceted arts hub designed by @OMANewYork which will house artist studios, galleries, and spaces for arts nonprofits @ProgressiveArtStudioCollective & @SignalReturn. ⠀ ⠀ @ArchPaper's Matt Hickman writes "at the heart of the new cultural complex OMA has envisioned a 2,000-square-foot outdoor public courtyard that will serve as an 'accessible community space and activity condenser.' The courtyard space takes advantage of an area of the existing building in an advanced state of disrepair, missing both an end wall and a roof. Bricked and boarded-up sections of the building facade (and there are many) will be removed to allow for operable fenestrations, while windows in the gallery space will be extruded to serve as art vitrines." ⠀ ⠀ #LANTERNDetroit #theShepherdDetroit #LittleVillageDetroit #OMANewYork #PASC #SignalReturn @AnthonyCuris @JJCuris⠀⠀ ——⠀⠀ Renderings copyright of OMA and Luxigon
