My first slip cast Gummy Bear! So I made a huge mess and the first one I poured was actually too thin and ripped apart as I was trying to release it from the mold. The plaster mold itself could be better constructed so there isn't as big of a seam for me to smooth out, but besides that.... He's kinda cute 🥰. Eventually I'd like to cast enough for my students to design. As for this guy, decisions need to be made on how I want to glaze him. I am a proud member of the wonderful @find.amaker curated online craft directory and this week it’s ‘Find a Maker Week’. (Check it out on www.findamaker.co.uk/) Today members are posting a photo to say hello and introduce ourselves. So this is me in my lovely rustic studio in South Derbyshire hugging a piece of foraged bark, in front of what used to be the table tennis table but is now my work space. I forage for natural materials in the woods nearby and then using simple techniques of stitching, tying and weaving, I assemble vessels, small sculpture and collage. It’s the tiny, quirky details of nature that I look for and aim to share with others through exhibitions and workshops. Hello! Hi! How are ya? It's Find A Maker @find.amaker week on the ol' socials. Today's topic is meet the maker! Hi, my name is Nick Vorstermans, (fun fact, in middle Dutch this translates to Forest man!) I do really come from a family of woods people. My great great grandfather was in the forestry industry in the Netherlands, my Grandfather worked for a door manufacturer which is why he immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands and my Dad trained to be a furniture maker and started a woodshop in a community for adults with disabilities. So I guess I can say woodworking is in my blood 🪚🪵🩸 I've been working wood since 2008 when I began my woody education in British Columbia at BCIT and took a fine furniture/cabinet making course. I quickly realized which side of the industry I fit into (hint, it wasn't the mass manufactured side) and luckily got a job with a furniture maker. From there I worked with many makers, building kitchens, furniture and other bits. All the while taking on commissions in my spare time. This led to me starting my own business, which is what I always wanted to do. Fast forward to 2017 and I attended @msoa_craft and studied and got my MA (something I never thought I'd do) Currently I'm based in Manchester and collect the majority of my materials from storm fallen trees or when someone cuts a tree down for safety reasons. Often collected by bicycle and trailer 🪵🚲. I've made many things from wood, including: bowls, spoons, kitchens, shelves, tables, chairs, bar stools, bars, cladding and a bunch more things. Really I just love wood as a material, learning new techniques and use this as my creative outlet. There's more to my story of course, but that's enough for one post 😂. It’s find a maker week - the absolutely brilliant curated collection of makers and galleries - of which I’m very humbled to be part of. Hello - I’m Caroline - a jewellery designer maker working with fine metals, gemstones and pearls. Working from my studio in the garden of my Lincolnshire home I explore the intricacy & repetition in the pattern & ornaments of life in India. These continue to be integral to my designs which are evocative, sensory and reminiscent of cultural travel, heritage and moments in time. I have recently welcomed a new addition to my workshop - Polki a working cocker spaniel who is a studio assistant in training - although at 10weeks old her attention to detail is somewhat limited at present! I’m also to be found trekking in places various around the UK and the world as I continue to raise awareness and funds for the early detection of breast cancer. This week is Find A Maker Week and following the excitement of being accepted into @find.amaker last week, now is a good time to introduce myself properly. I’m Karl and after spending the last 36 years developing my design and making skills in various disciplines, I decided to pursue my passion for making and set up Solace in Wood in September 2023. In my garden SWS (studio/workshop/shed!) in Dinas Powys, South Wales, I design and make unique turned and carved wooden objects for everyday use and enjoyment. I particularly enjoy turning green (unseasoned) timber almost paper-thin and allowing the pieces to twist and warp naturally as they dry out to produce exciting and often unexpected results. I sometimes add colour and texture by ebonising or dyeing and wire brushing. Products range from sculptural items and hollow form vessels to contemporary homeware. I use only ethically sourced and repurposed timber from local arborists, public parks (with permission!), friends, family and neighbours. I am thrilled to be accepted into Find A Maker - if you don't know, it's a curated collection of makers from all over the world, the website is well worth a visit! BETWEEN DREAMS AND REALITY Bespoke Footwear On view through May 25th WES SHUGART Brentwood, TN We continue our series highlighting the thirteen shoe and bootmakers from our current exhibition - with Wes Shugart. “Music City Leather” is owned and operated by award-winning boot maker Wes Shugart. He creates custom cowboy boots that are as unique as their wearers. His boots are handmade in Nashville, Tennessee, where Wes holds fast to the Southern tradition of pride in what he does and how he does it. He believes in quality and style, marrying modern fashion and practical durability - with the art of footwear. Growing up on a Georgia cattle farm, Wes learned the importance of a comfortable cowboy boot. After moving to Nashville and after running several businesses, he took up bootmaking. He headed to New Mexico and apprenticed with a second-generation bootmaker, learning the craft. A few years later he continued his studies by spending time with an award-winning boot maker in Arizona. Since that time his work has been displayed in museums and received several awards and accolades. Wes now works from his custom shop in beautiful Nashville and loves creating functional art for people from all over the country and world. SIENNA (beech). Acrylic paint, oil and wax. (38.5/37 x 12.5 cm). This decorative bowl is made from beech wood that comes from the Forest Botanical Garden located in Tharandt/Germany. My partner’s father works there. He called me when this tree fell during a storm and offered it for my work. I really like this shape and have been making more of these recently. I was tempted to paint the outside of Sienna black but then looking at the beautiful grain I decided to leave it as it is. Sianna is available in the online shop. Link in Bio. . 📷 @vitakrhura .
