(scritti birmani 11) -Dal monopolio del potere militare all'avvento della LNPD (1962-1990)- Le enormi difficoltà riscontrate nel primo decennio, post-indipendenza, dai governi nazionalisti-civili di U Nu, portarono progressivamente ad una polarizzazione crescente all'interno del Paese. Lo stato di guerra interna permanente, e la debolezza delle istituzioni repubblicane, già gravemente screditate agli occhi della popolazione, portò ad un repentino consolidamento del potere del Tatmadaw, che prese il controllo de facto della Birmania, dopo il golpe del Gen. Ne Win. Il "partito" militare propose una vaga "via birmana al socialismo", procedendo comunque a purgare gli elementi comunisti nello Stato (deportati nelle isole Andamane o liquidati), e infine la stessa fazione di U Nu. Nei fatti furono portate avanti politiche di nazionalizzazione industriale ma nessuna strategia di ampio respiro. Il trentennio di governo militare non produsse risultati apprezzabili, sul piano della prosperità economica, con un Paese tra i più arretrati dell'Asia, e sempre più isolato. Inoltre, i militari repressero nel sangue le varie fazioni ostili, o potenzialmente concorrenti verso il loro potere: minoranze etniche, lavoratori e studenti. In particolare, gli universitari furono particolarmente attivi nello sfidare il potere militare, e nel subirne la repressione. Ci furono numerose sollevazioni: Rivolta del 7 luglio 1962, contro la liquidazione della fazione civile di U Nu; Crisi dei funerali di U Thant 1974 (ex Segretario generale dell'ONU e figura molto prestigiosa), Rivolte del 1975, 1976, 1977. La rivolta più grave fu però la cosiddetta 8888 (8 agosto 1988) nella quale emersero leader come Aung San Suu Kiy, e furono uccisi migliaia di manifestanti. La protesta costrinse Ne Win a lasciare il potere, sostituito dal Gen. Sein Lwin ("Il boia di Rangoon"), e poi da nuovi governi militari(Saw Maung, Than Shwe). Nella fase terminale degli anni Novanta, i militari cominciarono lentamente ad allentare la presa sul Paese, mentre si ponevano le premesse per un futuro ritorno di un governo civile (cosa che si concretizzerà solamente nel 2016).
