10-14-23 One of the main things that inspired this fall trip was visiting Salem, MA during October! It's basically the Halloween capital of the world! I knew it would be super busy, so I had to get up extra early got see some things without the crowds. This is the Proctor's Ledge memorial and supposedly is the location of the gallows where the victims were hung. I got here just before dawn and had the place to myself. 🫠💀Idk about you but I’m still recovering from October. In the meantime, here are some of the many photos I have and need to go through. My family came to visit me a few weeks ago and I already miss them so much. 😭😖 My niece brought her hubby and daughter to experience all the Salem things. I’ve been homesick for quite sometime. Being with them lit up my soul. I laughed so much, I wasn’t overwhelmed with anxiety and depression. I was able to enjoy all the fun. As the days grow shorter, the weather grows colder, and the harvest season comes to an end, ancient Celtic people celebrated this transition to winter with the festival of Samhain. This pagan holiday was observed by those living in what is now Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, and northern France over 2,000 years ago. Celtic people believed that the year existed in two portions: light and dark. Samhain not only marked the end of the light half of the year and the arrival of darkness, but also the period where the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest. Spirits of the departed were believed to return in physical form to roam the Earth and visit their living loved ones. Along with these benevolent souls, however, much darker spirits could be lurking in the shadows; hoping to take advantage of some unsuspecting living people. Those fearful of being harmed by the dead would sometimes wear a mask or costume to try and confuse or frighten away would-be supernatural attackers. Carving a round vegetable with a gruesome expression and placing a light inside would not only brighten up the home, but perhaps give added protection to warding off unwelcome spirits. Very little is known about the earliest Samhain festivals seeing as there is no historical evidence in existence. The first record of the holiday comes from a bronze calendar from the 1st Century BCE found in France. What is known about the holiday comes from stories and general details passed down over time, but much of the history remains uncertain. To this day, this ancient, pagan festival lives on through the celebration of Halloween and through Neopagan and Wiccan practices. Dear Salem, MA You rained on us the whole time and I’m not complaining because I got to hang out with the coolest family I know. Witches, Rain, and a little colonel terror didn’t keep us inside. We explored haunted houses, beautiful fall foliage, learned about the witch hysteria of the 1860s, ate the most delicious seafood I’ve ever had, and got to see the Atlantic Ocean and east coast for the first time. So grateful for my family, and this beautiful life I get to life.
