. Kaka`ako, Island of O`ahu, Hawai`i, USA The passion fruit, called lilikoi in the Islands, was actually introduced to the Hawai`i in 1880. It is a native fruit of Brazil. The similar climate and growing environment allowed for the fruit to take hold and literally become part of the landscape. It is a fragrant fruit with a wonderfully- complex flavor profile. When fresh, it has a bright, astringent flavor. But as it ripens, the fruit becomes much sweeter and gives off an unmistakable perfume. Though the pulpy seeds within can be scooped out and eaten, they’re commonly used as a flavoring in various recipes and drinks. You must try lilikoi cheesecake. I also had a lilikoi margarita which I believe was so good that I don’t remember how good it was. Ha! (Please eat and drink responsibly.) Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya opened in Ala Moana Center back in 2020. I only recently tried them, but was so blown away! Being in Japan for just a few days, we missed out on tonkatsu and have been looking for someplace at home. We stumbled across Nana Ai Katsu in Kaimuki and were blown away!! While waiting in line for Ichiran Ramen in Ueno Station, we decided to try a smaller restaurant nearby. Taishio Soba Touka is known for their lighter salt broth made with “tai” (sea bream). We ordered: 🍜 Taishio Soba - the addition of yuzu peel added added a delightful brightness to the broth. 🍜 Taishio Tsukemen - the soup had flower petals and shichimi (seven spice) which floated beautifully on top. The shichimi also added a nice kick at the end of each bite! The flavor was amazing. It was a lot lighter than other ramen I’ve tried, but still rich in umami. This is my first time trying Taishio ramen, but definitely will not be my last!
