Not having access to these basic necessities can have a deep impact on someone’s life, along with the shame around menstruation and lack of awareness creates period poverty on many levels. A visual representation of Team BGP in this heatwave: 🩸🔥🥵🫠) Whether it’s fatigue, pad irritation or insomnia that’s getting to you in these record temperatures, we’ve got you covered. Here are our top tips for heatwave periods: 🔴 WATER - Menstruation makes you tired—and so does the heat. Fight fatigue by staying hydrated and keeping your energy levels up! (Plus heat and hormones are the perfect combo for a nasty migraine - water is your best preventative friend!) 🔴 SHADE - Menstruation messes up our circadian rhythm (the natural way our body knows when to sleep). This, along with heat and fewer dark hours, means that sleep becomes harder. Keep your room cool and dark by keeping it shady - that means keeping those curtains/blinds closed! 🔴 PRODUCTS - The vulva can get sweaty in the heat, which can mean that pads can cause irritation. If you start to notice irritation, try to swap your pad for a different product that’s gentler on the skin (e.g tampon or period pants). 🔴 SELF-CARE - PMS and the general discomfort of record-high heat are enough to make anyone bloody stressed. Be kind to yourself, and know that just like this heat, your period symptoms, will eventually end. (Ice cream at the ready!) PS: Remember to take it slow, and, if you have to venture outside of your cool, dark room, remember your water bottle, suncream, hat and sunnies too—and, if possible, try to travel outside of the hottest hours of the day. A tweet claiming that periods only cost £13 a year because cheap tampons will 'do the job' (🤯) went viral recently & we have some THOUGHTS. 1. First, a PSA for the people in the *very* back: 📣 Period poverty exists & is a rising problem. 📣 At BGP, we are seeing unprecedented levels of demand for support with access to products. 2. But...why? Put simply: household budgets are under pressure all round. 40% of those on Universal Credit are in work & food bank referrals are up. People are having to make impossible choices between life’s essentials. 3. "One cheap pack a month will do, right?" Well...no. Stress, perimenopause, medication, menstrual health conditions & changes from one cycle to the next are just *some* of the reasons why every person who menstruates needs a variable and often a significant number of products – not just one pack a month (lol). 4. PS: there are other additional monetary/physical/emotional/educational costs of having a period. These costs include pain relief, the cost of cleaning/replacing clothes/bed sheets (which includes the cost of washing products AND water and energy bill costs) & the knock-on effects of missed education & work, alongside *many* other things. 5. And cheap tampons? Generally, they won't ‘do the job’. Everybody deserves access to safe, quality products of their choice, & cheaper products can cause irritation & infection. They’re often bulky & uncomfortable. And overwearing products - a common way of dealing with this cost - carries other risks like Toxic Shock Syndrome. 6. And cheaper products aren't always accessible! If you can’t afford to get to a big supermarket, you may have to rely on what’s available locally, probs at a markup. 7. Oh - that's not all. There are plenty of other issues, including a lack of education & stigma, which mean that periods remain misunderstood & shrouded in shame/secrecy. That stigma also means that 'women's needs' (other euphemisms available 🙄) are bottom of the priority list. Y'know—the one that's under immense pressure bc of the cost of living crisis. This year, we'd like to get even more bloody personal and introduce you all to the brilliant team behind Bloody Good Period; who we are, what we get up to in the organisation and the different ways that we're striving towards menstrual equity. Becca @bbbbcca manages our social media (including this post...queue semi-awkward self-interview...), works with Terri on all of our communications and helps to run and organise our events, Bloody Funny and Bloody Good Music. Let's do some reflecting for this post, eh? So, tell us...me...yourself...the audience (?) — what's your fave thing about working with BGP and/or BGP in general? 🩸 A: Genuinely bloody everything. Ok, ok - I know that that's a *slightly* cop-out answer, but it's true. The team is incredible and so so passionate and knowledgeable. I love our way of working, the creativity and the activism behind everything we do. Everyone pushes themselves, brings their best selves to work and gives support and love to each other when we need downtime and rest. BGP really is the best. 🔴 Q: What's one thing that you wish that everyone knew about periods? 🩸 A: I'd love more people to be more educated on conditions related to periods and the womb, like PMDD, endometriosis and fibroids. And just more period education in general! As we say at BGP - everyone should stay in the room when talking about menstruation. 🔴 Q: And, finally, what's your fave piece of period-based media? 🩸 A: Shameless BGP shout-out at the end here - Bloody Funny and Bloody Good Music. The team is amazing and the flexible set-up and inclusive values means that I can bring my whole self to work. 🔴 Q: And what's one thing that you wish that everyone knew about periods? 🩸 A: That not all girls/women get periods and not everyone who gets a period is a girl/woman. There are lots of reasons why this is true and each one adds another interesting layer to our wonderfully diverse society. 🔴 Q: Finally - what's your favorite piece of period-based media? 🩸 A: It has to be Sarah Levy’s portrait ‘Whatever (Bloody Trump)’ of then presidential candidate Donald Trump painted with her own menstrual blood in 2015. Hidden and historic, until it comes out in the strangest ways as we get older." - Dolly Alderton This paragraph from @dollyalderton's new book, 'Dear Dolly: On Love, Life and Friendship', perfectly describes how 'subtle' shame negatively affects us all - including when "you can't find menstrual products that aren't heavily scented with perfume." One of the major issues when fighting for menstrual equity is that so many people are embarrassed, awkward and/or uncomfortable discussing periods. 🩸 Women and people who menstruate are taught from an early age that periods are private, and there are over 5,000 different ways to refer to them - 'that time of the month', 'having the painters in', 'the curse' - without ever having to say the word 'period' (...and while some of these are pretty funny, they also reinforce the idea that the menstrual cycle is something to be hidden away, or even ashamed of). Periods are an entirely normal bodily function. And that's why, at BGP, we say #NoShameHere when talking about periods. TW: Racism, systemic racism, institutional racism Systemic racism and unconscious bias in healthcare and education mean that Black women aren’t receiving the menstrual support they need. A recent report from @blackwomensreprohealth shows how the current state of Black women's menstrual and reproductive health across the UK requires critical action. And it's pretty bloody damning! The report highlights how structural barriers in education and healthcare deepen the impact of poor menstrual health outcomes for Black women. It highlights these critical recommendations for action in the UK: 🩸 Menstrual education must be intersectional and comprehensive 🩸Research into the prevalence and impact of menstrual-health related conditions on Black women should be increased 🩸The Women’s Health Strategy should better recognise and address intersectional identities 🩸Existing infrastructure needs to include peer support, like that currently offered by charities and other organisations If we are to achieve menstrual equity, we have to acknowledge that our liberation is connected to each others. Therefore, work on menstrual health must be intersectional, inclusive, diverse, anti-racist and decolonial. This report is bloody essential reading! A reminder: everyone deserves to be, and should be, included in the conversation around periods. At Bloody Good Period, we always use open, inclusive, straight-forward language when talking about periods—and have done from the bloody beginning. Since the beginning, we’ve also received plenty of backlash for this. And this Christmas, a lot of hate-filled, negative comments were left on our social platforms as our bloody good message reached new audiences with #FestivePeriod. Language bloody matters. Some people who have periods don’t identify as women; including trans men or non-binary people. Some women don’t have periods. And *everyone* needs to know about periods. Including everyone in the conversation doesn’t erase anyone. And, another reminder—we’re never going to bloody change this. Irrespective of trolling, abuse or dogwhistles (all of which we receive and have to spend our precious time and capacity in managing...) - we will always bloody block and delete anything transphobic, racist and/or hate-filled. Our values will never change. Finally - thank you to all of you bloody babes who send us love and support. Elysha manages the day-to-day activities involved in the program; working with partners to remove challenges people who menstruate face in the workplace whilst securing new revenue to support the people we work with. 🔴 Q: Hi Elysha! So - let's get straight to it - what's your favourite thing about working with BGP and/or BGP in general? 🩸 A: Getting to do work everyday that is a) so interesting and rewarding b) progressive and inclusive and c) puts pressure on existing structures and institutions to do better! and getting to work with a team who have mostly the same values, who advocate for self-care and enable each other to work flexibly! 🔴 Q: And what's one thing that you wish that everyone knew about periods? 🩸 A: That “the period” is only one part of a totally awesome, incredible and impressive monthly(ish) cycle and that by understanding it in more detail and getting to know your body you can live a more fulfilled life. Menstruating bodies do and can do incredible things! 🔴 Q: Finally - what's your favourite piece of period-based media? 🩸 A: I think the section on periods at the Vagina Museum is a super cool way to learn about the history of periods practices! ** We’re STILL being bloody screwed over by the Tampon Tax ** The Tampon Tax may have been abolished, but the only people benefiting are retailers. They’ve scooped 80% of the tax benefits for themselves and have been pocketing the extra profit! That means that the money that was supposed to land back in OUR purses, hasn’t. FYI babes: Tampons have an expiry date. …Who bloody knew!? If you look really closely at (some) boxes of tampons, you’ll see an expiry date; showing that they’ve got about a five-year shelf life when stored properly. However, period products aren’t currently regulated like other medical and cosmetics items. Because of this, we don’t 100% know what happens after the expiry date—and manufacturers aren’t even required to put a date on the box. What we do know is that after their expiry date, period products won’t be up to quality standards - meaning they may not work as well. It’s also possible that mould and bacteria could start to find their way into the product after the use-by date. Any nasty business like that can cause irritation and infections, which is especially dangerous when using a tampon, as this can lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome - a sometimes fatal condition. Back when we used to get physical period product donations, we’d shout about this all the time, as we used to receive expired tampons, battered pads and opened, loose products—not what anyone wants to be getting at their time of the month! But now we have our new way of working, we don’t need to worry about out of date products. Thanks to our pad-to-partner model all the products we donate are guaranteed to be brand new, and in-date—so people only receive good quality products that they actually want. How bloody ace! At Bloody Good Period, we believe that the UK has a legal and moral obligation to provide safe, welcoming, humane asylum to people fleeing violence and persecution. This includes making sure that people have the services, support and funds that they need once they arrive to the UK. Last week, the High Court ruled that Home Secretary Suella Braverman had acted unlawfully, after she ignored advice from officials to increase the rate of weekly financial support for asylum seekers by almost £5 - to £45 per week. Braverman provided no reason or explanation to the court for her decision. An increase to £45 a week for asylum seekers to live on, without being allowed to work, is still not bloody enough for anyone. And for refugees and asylum seekers who menstruate, periods are an added burden. Our vision is of a society in which asylum seekers, refugees and otherwise displaced people and their dependents have unrestricted access to high quality, free period supplies of their choice. But we also believe that this responsibility should not fall on charities such as ourselves—but as part of a Government strategy that cares for refugees, asylum seekers and people who menstruate.
