We aren't exactly sure when Shakespeare's Birthday was, but celebrating today with one of my favorite Shakespearean actors & film. A bit obsessed with Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books for decades: spellbound by the layered visuals, soundtrack, and incredible costumes - by Sir John Gielgud in the title role, and favorite dancer Michael Clark as Caliban! @michaelclarkco (Decades ago, I made an amulet for myself of him as Macbeth. Does this make me weird?🤣 Most likely, yes.) There is such magic in gathering together and putting on a play, or making a film from stories that have been retold for so many centuries. So many interpretations. Really enjoyed being a part of the crew of Romeo & Juliet and Taming of the Shrew, creating props & jewels for Boston-area Theatre companies. Stairs 1 Geneva (1994) #petergreenaway The film comprises one hundred sequences showing a location in the city of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1994, over a period of one hundred days, one hundred white wooden staircases were installed around the city to be climbed by the public. At the top of each staircase was a simple hole framing a “living picture postcard”, a perfect “cinema-image by Peter Greenaway” accompanied by a commentary of one sentence in French and English, printed below the viewfinder. #ZOO 美しく狂ったシンメトリーへの執着。生と死、美と醜…あらゆる対極のバランス。 性描写や腐敗映像も強く印象に残るけど、 私が1番頭に残ったのは”シンメトリー”だった。 生き物とはなぜ目、耳、手、足…２つずつの シンメトリーの姿をしているのだろう。 していなければならないのだろう。 ２つ揃っていないとなぜ不完全に思うのか、 なぜ目は大きく１つじゃいけないのか。 この作品の中にある台詞が強く頭に残り、後日全く思い出すべきでないタイミングで頭に浮かび、他人に分かるほど意識が飛んでしまった。 映画は楽しむ為に鑑賞するのも一つの理由だけど、いつも密かに求めている ”自分の世界を揺るがすほどの刺激” がこの映画にはあった。 ラストシーンも狂おしいほど好き。 とはいえ、人に薦めようと思う映画ではなく、日本で観れるグリーナウェイ作品の少なさと 情報の少なさが物語るように、万人受けする映画ではないのだと思う。多くの人は嫌悪感でいっぱいになるかもしれない…笑 でも私には、この映画の為に仕事終わりに電車で遠く観に行って、鑑賞後すぐ帰るという時間とお金をかけた価値が充分ある映画でした。 もう観る前の自分には戻れない。 最高でした！ ————————— 写真2枚目は、 先日手に入れた1992年発行のグリーナウェイの特集本。日本語で書かれている書物が貴重なので、しっかり読みたいと思います📚 🦢🦓🐌 #AZedandTwoNoughts #PeterGreenaway #andreaferreol #jossackland #francesbarber #ピーターグリーナウェイ #ピーターグリーナウェイレトロスペクティヴ #ピーターグリーナウェイレトロスペクティヴ美を患った魔術師 #マイケルナイマン #アート映画 #80年代映画

Peter Greenaway, nato il 5 aprile 1942 a Newport, in Galles, è un regista, sceneggiatore e artista visivo britannico, noto per lo stile unico che fonde l'influenza della pittura rinascimentale e barocca con il cinema. La sua filmografia è caratterizzata da una composizione scenica meticolosa e da temi che spaziano dal piacere sessuale alla morte dolorosa. Cresce a Londra, dove la sua famiglia si era trasferita dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale. Sin da giovane, decise di diventare un pittore, ma fu anche profondamente influenzato dal cinema europeo, in particolare dai lavori di Ingmar Bergman e dai registi della Nouvelle Vague come Jean-Luc Godard e Alain Resnais. Iniziò la carriera artistica come pittore, ma presto si dedicò al cinema, lavorando come montatore e regista per il Central Office of Information nel 1965. Durante questo periodo, realizzò una serie di cortometraggi sperimentali che gettarono le basi per la futura vita da regista. Il debutto nei lungometraggi avvenne (1980) con "The Falls", un'opera enciclopedica e assurda che racconta di novantadue vittime di un misterioso evento conosciuto come VUE (Violent Unknown Event). Il successo internazionale arrivò due anni dopo con "The Draughtsman's Contract", un enigma narrativo ambientato nella campagna inglese del XVII secolo. Tra i lavori più noti c'è "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover" del 1989, un film che esplora temi come la gola, la violenza e la morte, strutturato come un pasto in un ristorante di alta cucina. Greenaway non ha mai evitato argomenti tabù o rappresentazioni grafiche, spingendo gli spettatori a confrontarsi con la nudità, la sessualità, la religione e la morte.
