The penultimate episode of the latest season of @justthethingpod is about my favourite franchise of all time, with a focus on Fast 7 as it's the one where Kurt Russell's character is introduced. We also enlist the expert opinion of filmmaker @rossboyask to help unravel what makes these ridiculous films so appealing, and of course, to imagine what would they would be like if the creature from The Thing was added to the mix. OK, here’s a really wild 1924 short ‘Family Life’. It not only has a ton of crazy, laugh-out-loud stunts and prop gags, but for many of them we couldn’t quite even figure out how they were done! . This short was from Episode 36 of The Silent Comedy Watch Party. It was our 641st silent. . Also, Ben Model said he found this short on an older multi-DVD set called Encyclopedia of Slapstick - so we zipped to EBay and got a copy! Anita Loos is most famous for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but did you know she started writing film scenarios in the silent era? She sent scenarios to DW Griffith, who eventually hired her as a writer, and she worked on Douglas Fairbanks early films with Biograph. She became known for her witty intertitles. After a brief retirement, she became a screenwriter at MGM. Can you guess what Jean Harlow film she wrote? #filmhistory #jeanharlow #anitaloos #oldhollywood #moviestar

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni’s first English-language feature was an international sensation. A countercultural masterpiece about the act of seeing and the art of image making, Blow-Up takes the form of a psychological mystery, starring David Hemmings as a fashion photographer who unknowingly captures a death on film after following two lovers in a park. With outstanding performances, an intoxicating color palette, and jazzy Herbie Hancock soundtrack, this brilliant film cemented Antonioni as one of cinema’s greatest artists. Seven Samurai was first released on this day in 1954, 70 years ago. As always with Kurosawa, it’s not about the action, because the build up is slow, immersive and deliberate. Yet when all hell breaks loose, it disorientates you in its rainy, muddy frenzy when the elements change everything. Even now, it’s terrifying, exhausting and ugly. For some of the epic battle sequences he knew would be single takes, he deployed multiple cameras to capture the full scope of chaos and not waste any moment. He was also a meticulous editor. All of this combined was quite radical in its day and helped inform the modern filmmaking blueprint. Yet above all else, it’s all about the story, characters, emotion, and their well defined motivation behind protecting this village for noble reasons, with stunning cinematography to take us on that journey. The classics are here to stay 🥋🎬 #sevensamurai #akirakurosawa #kurosawa #toshiromifune #takashishimura #japanesefilm #japanesecinema #japanesemovie #classicfilm #classicmovie #filmhistory #historyofcinema #filmmaking #filmmakinglife

Carole Lombard was a teen when she landed a contract at Fox. She appeared in minor roles in silent films throughout the late 20s, but it was in the sound era where she hit her stride. Lombard was the queen of the screwball comedy genre as well as a practical joker off the set. With her girl-next-door looks and her quick smile, she lit up films such as No Man of her Own, Lady by Choice, Nothing Sacred, and My Man Godfrey. Costars loved her, audiences were captivated by her wit and humility, and reporters found her unpredictable and fun. Clark Gable fell in love with Lombard because she stood up to him and gave no quarter. She was well on her way to becoming the biggest star in Hollywood, when, on her way home from a War Bond Rally, she boarded a TWA flight #3 in Las Vegas. The plane would crash into a mountain a few minutes later. The actress’s final public words were, “Before I say goodbye to you all, come on — join me in a big cheer — V for Victory.” Her last film was ironically To Be or Not to Be. #filmnoir #books #tbr #turnerclassicmovies #oldhollywood #classicfilm #classicfilmstars #tcm #film #noir #vintage #oldmovie #cinephile #hollywood #1930s #1930sfilm #1940s #moviestars #filmhistory #hollywoodhistory #filmbuffs #classicmovie #classicmoviestars #oldhollywoodactress #oldhollywoodactor #oldhollywoodstars #acecollins #authorsofinstagram #carolelombard

🎬 On this day in 1954, Akira Kurosawa's cinematic masterpiece Seven Samurai was released. This epic work redefined the action genre and introduced narrative and technical innovations that influenced filmmaking worldwide. Did you know: 1. ONE OF THE LONGEST MOVIES EVER "Seven Samurai" is one of the longest films ever made, with a runtime of 3 hours and 27 minutes. Its extensive production lasted nearly a year, which was unheard of at the time in Japan. 2. NEARLY BANKRUPT The film was so expensive to produce that it nearly bankrupted Toho Studios. Kurosawa's ambitious vision included shooting on location with elaborate sets, which pushed the budget to unprecedented levels. 3. GLOBAL STORY INFLUENCE The film's narrative structure, featuring a team assembling to accomplish a mission, inspired countless adaptations and homages, most famously the Western "The Magnificent Seven." 4. ACTION FILM INNOVATOR Kurosawa employed multiple cameras to capture the action sequences from various angles, a technique now standard in action films but revolutionary at the time. #SevenSamurai #OnThisDay #FilmHistory #AkiraKurosawa

🏃‍♂️💀 NEW 50 Date Night Screams episode is out now! . "Ghosts on the Loose" is a comedy/old, dark house movie from 1943. It starred a comedy group called "The East Side Kids," which was a rotating cast of young men who starred in many movies of the time. Amber and Mike take you through the plot, which includes the bust of a ring of propagandists and an ending that didn't need to be there which needs some explanation, because it includes a potentially upsetting symbol from World War II that we don't use casually today. . PLUS, the non-problematic part of this show is the original non-player character created by Mike for use in tabletop role playing games inspired by this movie! Chaplin’s ‘A Jitney Elopement’ is yet another film that gets better each time you see it. (This is our fourth viewing.) . In case you are not in the know, a Jitney was 1915 slang for a Model T. . Notice how low-key Chaplin is in the first act, when he’s pretending to be royalty. It heightens his ‘fish out of water’ humor as he tries to fit in during a very uncomfortable lunch. . And the second reel is mostly an all-out car chase, something fairly unique to Chaplin-directed films. . . . #chaplin #charliechaplin #charleschaplin #essanay #1910s #silentfilm #silentmovie #silentcinema #filmbuff #classicmovies #filmhistory #moviereview #vintagemovies #classiccomedy #slapstick #cinemastudies #moviebuff #goldenageofhollywood #classichollywood #filmstudies #filmrestoration #oldhollywood #vintagefilm #classicfilm #oldhollywoodstars #filmschool #filmarchive #nilesessanaysilentfilmmuseum

From the mid 60s to the mid 80s, film cooperatives in Australia played a crucial role in distributing and showcasing independent cinema, both local and international. Initially focusing on 16mm film, these cooperatives operated in various forms across the country. In Brisbane, the Filmmakers Co-op (1975–77) followed the footsteps of the politically charged multimedia hub, FOCO, which emerged in the 1960s. FOCO provided a platform for underground movies and innovative cinema experiences that coexisted with provocative anti-Vietnam War films like Vietnam Report (1966) by Kit Guyaat and Hearts and Minds (1968) by Bruce Petty. Alongside these films, FOCO also featured musical performances by bands such as Mick Hadley and the Coloured Balls, Max Merritt and the Meteors, and The Wild Cherries. The film cooperatives of the 1960s and early 1970s, including FOCO, actively challenged the conservative policies of state and federal governments, advocated for the New Left movement, opposed the Vietnam War, and resisted censorship. See: Hughes article in Senses of Cinema 'A Work in Progress: the Rise and Fall of Australian Filmmakers Co-operatives, 1966–86'. In Our Dancing Daughters (1928), Joan Crawford plays Diana — an ambitious, liberated young woman navigating the complexities of a rapidly changing society, whose unexpected experience of love leaves her genuinely heartbroken. Johnny Mack Brown plays Diana’s love interest, football star Ben Blaine. https://bit.ly/RetroformatDancingDaughters The pair had enough chemistry that MGM re-teamed them for an early talkie in 1930, the western/musical Montana Moon. Prior to his acting career, Brown had excelled as a halfback for the University of Alabama's championship-winning football team in 1926. Brown's prowess on the field was exemplified by his outstanding performance in the 1926 Rose Bowl, where he clinched the Most Valuable Player title by scoring two of Alabama's three touchdowns in a surprising victory against the University of Washington. Don’t miss this rare chance to see the legendary Joan Crawford and Ben Blaine in one of the last great silent films, Our Dancing Daughters, with live, original music by the one-and-only Cliff Retallick... Meet Dolores del Río (on the right, 📸 courtesy of @lapubliclibrary), the first Mexican-American actress to make it big in Hollywood! Born in 1904 in Durango, Mexico, Dolores came from a wealthy family & was related to prominent people in the Mexican film industry, including filmmaker Julio Bracho and actor Ramón Novarro. In 1925, Dolores began her career in Hollywood after being invited by Edwin Carewe, an American filmmaker, who was utterly fascinated by her. Her debut film, Joanna, was directed by Carewe that same year. The following year, she was casted in the war film What Price Glory?, which became the second highest grossing movie of 1926. Her rise to stardom was evident as playwright George Bernard Shaw enthused that “the two most beautiful things in the world are the Taj Mahal and Dolores del Río.” Dolores also became close friends with other prominent Mexicans of the time, including Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Not surprisingly, Dolores had three husbands in her lifetime. More interesting is that she's thought to be part of Hollywood's "Sewing Circle," which is more of a euphemism than a club - it refers to a group of actresses - including Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Stanwyck - rumored to be queer and having affairs with each other. In 1942, she returned to Mexico and continued her work as an actress, eventually earning four Silver Ariels, the Mexican film industry’s most distinguished award. She passed away in 1983 at her home in Newport Beach, California. Visit her mural in Hollywood to honor her legacy as the first internationally recognized Mexican actress! . . . #inspiringwomen #womenshistory #badasswomen #historicalphotos #vintagephoto #throwbackpicture #cinema #films #movie#filmhistory

Compare The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946, left) and Scarecrow (Jerry Schatzberg, 1973, right). Wyler makes spatial arrangement and delayed recognition emotionally resonant, while Schatzberg builds a very different sort of tension that gradually highlights the surprising complementarity of these two wayward characters and the degree to which it is inextricably tied to their precarious situations.
