Printmakers Spotlight Company Of Witches by Sheila Woollam BA(Hons) Fabriano Rosapina 250g, Guttenburg PB7 A Company of Witches was inspired whilst cycling in Scotland and became the central image for my “Old Kings Road” series. The Glen Lonan valley is what is known as a “thin place”, a place of energy where the veil between this world and the eternal world is fused. You can walk (or in my case cycle), on the rim of these two worlds. My experience of this valley was so spiritual that it gave shape to my quest of the Old Kings Road. “Company of Witches” depicts a high mound of green moss covered with dark, imposing conifer trees. In these trees, the crows sat and championed me loudly for my travels. As I looked over my shoulder towards this hallowed place, I thought to myself… “There are witches in there”. Two years later and having completed an introduction to etching, I had the required skills for the image. Company of Witches, whilst central to my pilgrimage, was the beginning of my printmaking journey. Artist Spotlight Discarded Fishing Reel Tote by Karen Bowskill - Tideline Prints BA(Hons) "This is a block print made using a discarded fishing reel that I picked up from my local beach in Devon. All of my printed works are a response to the plastic pollution crisis we face. The plastics that I collect are separated and reworked into printing plates, and block printed onto fabrics reclaimed from the tourism industry. Some are combined with worn leather garments, to create luxury bags and purses. The results are a fabulous example of how we can challenge our perceptions of waste as a resource and material. Big, bold, repetitive circles represent the importance of a circular economy and longevity. 'Morning Sunlight In The Kitchen' Mezzotint on paper by Peg Morris @morrispeg About the Artist... After living in London for 30 years, Peg moved to the Surrey Hills in 2021. She is finding much inspriration in her new surroundings. Peg often returns to the salt marshes of East Anglia, where she grew up, for inspiration for her work. Weather, decay, abandonment, rust, erosion and the effect of changing light conditions; all processes of transformation of the landscape, objects or buildings, especially interiors, provide a starting point for much of her work which is rooted in drawing and observation. Meet the Artist Blackthorn Winter- Return Of The Swallows by Lydia Jane Duncan Reduction relief print using Cranfield safe wash ink Lydia is a printmaker, painter and surface pattern designer. She works from her open studio, Candyland Studios The Gallery, North Devon. Here she draws inspiration from the stunning North Devon coastline and Flora and Fauna in the surrounding landscape, from which she creates her artworks. Using traditional and modern techniques, Lydia designs colourful wallpapers and printed textiles, in contrast to her landscape works and block prints. More recently, Lino, Wood and Rubber block printing, have taken precedence in the studio with recent commissions leading the direction.The Hedgerow features heavily in her work and is a constant source of inspiration and interest when creating her prints. Lydia likes to capture the magic of nature in the landscape, hinting at folklore- connecting the myths and legends of the past to the present day. Dad's Shoes 1 by Hannah Shepheard BA, MA Linocut and monoprint 'This print is inspired by my fathers heavily paint covered shoes and the vibrant, impasto paintings his trainers were painted alongside. I took a painterly approach with the initial monoprint layer, applying the ink liberally with a brush, with the linocut block printed over the top. The linocut print reintroduces finer details and contrasts the looseness of the monoprint below, as well as reflecting mine and my fathers different choices of medium.' This plate has a few permanent inscribed lines in the card but the majority of the plate is blank. Reflection by Francis Allwood About the Artist... Working from her little studio in Cheshire Francis handprints beautiful drypoints, collagraphs and monotypes inspired by her life-long love of nature. After gaining a degree in Illustration from Kingston University back in 2007 she spent a few years pulling the odd pint, milking the odd (hundred-or-so) cow and then embracing parenthood; she does however still remain passionate about drawing, the foundation of her work, and has finally immersed herself in the wonderful world of original print. Artist Spotlight The Future’s Bright by Faye Winslade BA (Hons) Ink on Somerset paper Faye creates images where her characters are stuck, permanently, in worlds surrounded by black tones and dark textures. The images begin as drawings and are then photo etched onto a zinc plate- finishing with aquatint. The worlds she creates often hint at death and have an underlying dark humour.
