I looked up as I was packing her pieces and said “My dad was a teamster” before I could get another word out she put her hand over her heart and nodded to me. The process: These tiles are made from all my clay scraps! As a potter (and one who loves to trim) there is a lot of “wasted” Clay laying around the studio. All my scraps got wedged together and rolled into slabs. I made 4 different widths and the lengths vary greatly, in an attempt to maximize slab use and drive myself nuts. There is no glaze on these. The markings are made from the wood ash deposits landing and melting as well as the fire and flame they swirled in for 7 days. Each tile was wadded and watched over 🐾 until they were placed in the kiln. Some were sent in as stacks, and some boosted smaller pieces up, creating less empty space in the kiln, forcing the flame to play with our pieces 💃 The results are so special to me because it is absolutely something I could not make happen alone. Tinkering with Tiles 🥰 a month before this firing I had horrible cramps. As I laid on my linoleum bathroom floor seeking cooling comfort it just wasn’t cold enough. Instantly I knew what had to be done, I need to tile my bathroom. And so it begins…it may take years, but the idea of having a floor made with all my firing friends is one I can’t let go. Wood ash floating through the kiln finds places to rest on our pieces, it then reaches its melting point, adding layers and layers of loveliness.
