Arid to Humid I'm back in Arizona after a whirlwind trip to Iowa for my collaboration ceramics show with Adam Nielsen (@adamnlsn569 ), titled Arid to Humid. The show is open until December 9 at (@pearsonlakesartcenter ) Pearson Lakes Art Center, so if you're in the area, be sure to check it out! My drive from Arizona to Iowa and back was long, but I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have shared my work with the people from my hometown, Okoboji. I had a wonderful time installing the show, attending the opening reception, demonstrating for Spirit Lake High School, and teaching a two-day hands-on workshop. Just got our postcards for the collaboration show ‘Arid to Humid’ with the one and only talented @adamnlsn569 🎉🥳 One month until the show opens @pearsonlakesartcenter We’re excited to show everyone what weve been working on! 🏺The bottle on the postcard cover was created in my studio in April when Adam came to visit. Upon its completion lugged the piece out on one of my favorite hikes #ryalcanyoncampverdeaz and captured the piece in AZ. Then the bottle traveled 1,414 miles where Adam took his photo on beautiful #westlakeokoboji . We couldn’t have asked for a better blend of the two photos and places. Over 750 people attended the 1st Annual Verde Valley Pottery Festival. The event was considered a wild success by the artists and attendees alike. It’s been a little while since I’ve posted, life has been a bit crazy with my family welcoming our second son in August, our oldest starting school and just being busy all around. Posting on social media has taken the backseat. I’m finally getting back Into the studio to finish this large piece I started right before Finn was born. I’m frequently asked about my sandblasting process and where it all began. I started sandblasting my work a little over 6 years ago, the first sandblasted piece was to try and salvage a Jar that was “ruined” by a glossy commercial glaze. While removing the top gloss layer of glaze I the piece started to remind me of the subtle layered effects in atmospheric firing. I was excited by this new revelation in my work and I haven’t looked back since. The work has evolved over the years, and I’ve tried to replace this part of my process with matte glazes and underglazes (sandblasting is very time consuming) but I always come back to it. The soft velvety feel of the sandblasted parts can not be replicated. Also, the weathered and worn look (a byproduct of the process) gives every piece that unique touch.
