Whitney and her pet-loving family have a dog, and also, three big beautiful cats that utilize automated kitty litter stations atop the main staircase. The cat stations have been located in a wide alcove but the occasional kitty litter and the idea of looking at the cat area and their “business zone” prompted Whitney to seek out an artful covering to the area. Enter: The Barndoorist and the custom-braxketed “Tom and Jerry” barn door! The entryway needed a post—a return—and end over which the barn door could “lip” over when closing, as such doors can’t just end at a perpendicular wall with baseboard trim. The large door has hidden wheels that roll smoothly along a custom steel channel rail we crafted with special brackets that, as you can see, have subtly created cat heads up top for effect! And the door is floor to ceiling at nearly eight feet tall! We added a barrier spanning the 50+” wide entry double-stuck to the floor to close off the base gap and prevent debris scattering under the door. The little details matter the most! The key to this is cat entry, which they instantly accepted and enjoyed, and it is via the side of the closed door! We always add “side boards” to “bring a barn door back in close” to a wall, all whilst accommodating for any baseboard trim, wall features such as the hanging family photos shown in pictures, and more. All doors live out from walls… cat, or no cat, side boards are the trick to proper barndooring, and in this case, that’s exactly what makes it CATegorically cat-friendly functional art!
