The project consisted in the conversion of the top 4 stories of an existing unassuming building into a major photographic and moving image studio complex for Spring Studios, a comprehensive creative agency catering to the fashion industry, based in London. Among various leading professional design firms in New York, we were selected for the architectural design of the project. The scope included the construction of 11 studios, 9 green rooms, a signature restaurant, a bar, an art gallery, a cinema, a library, casting and editing offices, a roof deck, and a space for lighting and equipment rental. During the survey of the original building we discovered oversized steel trusses supporting the roof across the span of the full building width. These elements of the original building were spared from demolition and incorporated in the design of the main studio/event space area. The unassuming original façade of the building, consisting of yellow bricks and small horizontal windows has been transformed by the insertion of a massive window in steel and glass, opening the studio spaces to the amazing view of the open square located at the exit of the Holland Tunnel. Another important component of the design is the gigantic staircase, connecting the sixth floor to the lounge area above and the roof terrace on top. The design, inspired by surrealistic Escher drawings, was very complex. The stair was fabricated in Italy by Interbau. The result is a sculptural blackened steel structure. Photo by @_as__ap_ Spring Studios is a project design by H2A partner Aldo Andreoli in collaboration with @morrisadjmiarchitects circa 2014. www.habitat2art.com My name is Aldo Andreoli, A is the initial of my name, but A is also the initial of my last name, so my obsession with this letter of the alphabet started very early in life, as soon as I was able to pronounce and write my full name. I don’t remember exactly when I started to collect letters A, but every time I stumbled upon one of any kind, I bought it or simply took it for my collection. During my studies in university my favorite architect was the Finnish Alvar Aalto, my favorite design magazine Abitare and my favorite lighting company Artemide. After my A Plus graduation I formed my first company Aldo Andreoli Architetto. After few years my love for travels led me to America, and particularly to New York, a city that was always in my dreams. My move to New York happened in the late eighties: my favorite club was AREA in TriBeCa and SAVE THE ROBOTS in Avenue A. As soon as I bought my first car in the Usa, (an Audi) I joined AAA. Soon I discovered I didn’t like to work alone so I created my first American company: Aldo Andreoli & Associates. Then I created a partnership with Architect Morris Adjmi: Adjmi & Andreoli. In 2019 an old Italian friend of mine came back to New York from China. His name is Matthew Asinari and is a creative advertising leader. One morning I woke up with the formula H2O in my mind, ACCA2O in Italian. The idea to turn it into H2A (Accaduea in Italian) was almost automatic and Matthew seemed to like the sound of it too. Then we started to question: 2A stand for Andreoli and Asinari, but what about Aitch? It sounds good, but what about the meaning?
