AmeriCorps VISTAs on the Move!! Residents of Sustainable Fellwood gathered eagerly as the @farmtruck912 arrived, bringing fresh produce to the neighborhood. AmeriCorps VISTAs Bella Marchena and Jody Trumbull work to enhance @ForsythFarmersMarket programs, with Bella organizing events and creating videos to promote food systems development, and Jody securing funding for programs addressing food apartheid and health equity in Savannah. Both VISTAs also work directly with the community and local farmers, showcasing their diverse roles within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTAs spend 6 to 12 months deeply embedded in community capacity building, fostering sustainable and resilient communities nationwide. Step Up Savannah recently collaborated with the @UnitedWayCoastalEmpire Community Investment Volunteers and the @CityofSavannah Code Compliance to organize a Poverty Simulation. The Simulation is structured to offer a firsthand experience of the daily struggles and tough decisions that low-income individuals face. Participants assumed the roles of those experiencing economic hardship, navigating through a month in poverty, making tough choices about basic needs, and dealing with unforeseen crises. The significance of this event cannot be overstated. By immersing our community leaders in this simulation, we aimed to cultivate a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding poverty, including its root causes and its impact on our neighbors. We hope this firsthand experience informed and inspired our participants as they continue their vital work to address poverty, support local nonprofits, and effect lasting change in our region.
