Chants and leaps extended into the night of April 23 in front of the Casa Rosada. They came out to defend public university education and formed, together with thousands of others, an unprecedented tide of at least 800 thousand people. Read more from @nmaahc : #OnThisDay in 1899, jazz musician Duke Ellington was born in Washington, D.C. Ellington wrote more than 1,000 compositions during his lifetime and is credited as one of the most influential American composers. Born Edward Kennedy Ellington, his childhood nickname of “Duke” foreshadowed the elegance and ease in which he would go on to command the musical world. During the Harlem Renaissance, Ellington’s orchestra was the house band at Harlem’s famous Cotton Club. He later popularized the musical term “swing” with his 1931 composition, “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” Ellington was also a pioneer writer of extended jazz compositions, introducing pieces like “Reminiscing in Tempo” (1935), “Black, Brown, and Beige” (1943), and “Harlem” (1950) that significantly expanded the traditional popular song form. Beginning in 1965, Ellington composed a series of religious suites, performing them in sacred concerts in churches and cathedrals.
