Are taking exams not your favourite thing either? 🙄 Our very own lecturer Cor Zonneveld proves he doesn't need exams to test your knowledge in his course 'Ecology from Soil to Society'. Due to COVID-19 and studying from home last year, regular exams were out of the question. Cor instead asked his students to create a video connecting the lectured ecological theoretical knowledge with the reality of their own surroundings 🎥 It was a great success! Students felt like they had more control over their own learning process due to the freedom in creating a video with a more personal touch. "It shouldn't be the case that if you are born (in a certain community or with a certain background) that this is immediately a curse or a blessing for the rest of your life", explained summer camp organiser Vildan Kolic. 🇳🇱Studying in Amsterdam🇳🇱 We've been talking a lot about the Netherlands recently (you'll soon find out why🤗)and I've realized that I didn't share with you my experience living in Amsterdam! And that was actually life-changing for me. When I was 21, the thought of studying abroad crossed my mind for the first time. Back then it seemed impossible, but if I want something badly, I always get it. It took me some time to brush up on my English, then I started searching for different universities and scholarships. Truth be told, writing letters of motivation and sending applications is pretty menial - you need to be very determined and patient not to give up when you see these lists of endless requirements. I was missing out on a lot of social activities, but my efforts paid off. In April 2017 I finally received an e-mail from OTS Russia reading "Congratulations, you are accepted!", which meant I was awarded a scholarship covering the tuition fees of €13 000 to do a master's at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam😍 After arranging accommodation and some paperwork I moved to one of the most beautiful cities in the whole wide world. This experience broadened my horizons to the extent I hadn't even expected. I was blessed to meet amazing people (some of them I'm still in touch with), I travelled around Europe (thankfully there was no corona at that time), and I graduated from the university that ranks 39 worldwide👩🎓. So, if you have a dream, don't let it be just a dream. #OurStudents Studying in Corona times is not always easy. But our students keep their spirits up. Below, the chair of study association Laverna, Laura Ruhé, talks about her experiences. My name is Laura, I am a second year BA Classics student in Amsterdam and since September 2020 I am also the chair of the nicest study association, Laverna! When I started studying in 2019, I immediately fell into a warm bath at Laverna: I was enthusiastically welcomed at all the activities by senior students, whom I soon knew well. In March 2020, I went on the annual foreigh trip for the first time, which took us to Nîmes in Southern France. We viewed many beautiful things and, most importandly, had a lot of fun. None of us could have imagined that this would be the last time we could go somewhere without any worries... In the meantime, Laverna's activities have been online for over a year. As a board, we do our utmost to keep things fun by organizing original activities every month. Fortunately, the end of the crisis is in sight! We all hope to see each other soon at a live activity, and when possible, on Thursday evenings at our regular café Kapitein Zeppos! #acasa #laverna #studyinginamsterdam
