Sometimes you just need to say no, both for you and your dogs sanity! Working through reactivity with a nervy dog, our initial aim is to get the amount of reactions as low as possible. Every time our dogs have a reaction to something, it’s reinforcing that behaviour. So we want to get that count as close to zero as we can. It’s also bloody stressful to be out when we know our dog isn’t enjoying it. Just because an event is dog friendly, doesn’t mean it’s dog appropriate. More to the point, it might not be YOUR dog appropriate. Like, you could take your dog to a fireworks display, but you shouldn’t. In summary, I used to be upset seeing dog training and behaviour organisations, “industry leaders”, educational events and institutions, etc. uphold white supremacy culture and show complete apathy towards marginalised people and systemic oppression. However, now I’m actually glad they are showing their true selves and being honest with little they actually care. At least that way, as marginalised people and people who care about anti-oppression, we know who we can avoid, know where our money should and shouldn’t go, and no longer be sucked in by the false promise and illusion that there will be change. It still is disappointing of course. How are we in 2024, watching a genocide happen before our eyes, and yet folks, in a supposed “care industry”, still care more about upholding white supremacy while ignoring and perpetuating racism and other forms of oppression? How are people on one hand saying they do “trauma informed care” while at the same time perpetuating oppressive systems which cause trauma? What has been great though, is learning from my fellow peers in this industry who fight for collective liberation and are against systemic oppression and who are also continually seeking to improve the wellbeing of dogs, rather than stay stuck in methods we’ve learnt in the past. I love that we can keep changing our minds and improving what we do in light of better information and knowledge. If you’re starting out as a dog trainer or are thinking about starting out, I apologise that I can no longer in good conscience recommend any large, well-known institutions and organisations to go to. But there are still many great, accessible resources as well as amazing professionals out there to learn from and I’ll regularly share them to my IG stories. On top of that, remember that a big part of striving towards a future that is force-free involves interrogating all of punishment culture. Learning about anti-oppression, restorative justice, collective liberation, etc. will be a part of guiding you towards better care for not just people, but animals as well. Buddy has been working so hard practicing greetings with new people! In the past, he often would growl or bark when people approached, not because he isn’t friendly, but because their approach would make him so nervous! We’ve worked hard to create a routine where Buddy checks in with Mom, who then gives him the okay to greet if it’s okay! This has made a world of a difference for Buddy, who now checks in with Mom before she even cues him! • Even friendly dogs can benefit from a “routine” of how to greet new people. You know it’s a good training session when the smiles are as big as Rosie’s! • My favorite thing about training with Rosie is how much fun she has when we work together. This little girl never stops smiling, zooming around, wiggling and making me laugh. • When I first met Rosie, she was a terrified, trembling, anxious and fearful dog. It’s so important to set our dogs up for success!Making sure our dogs can easily succeed minimizes frustration and optimizes our dogs’ ability to learn. Training with the “3 D’s” (Duration, Distance, and Distraction) in mind by consciously starting at low to zero levels, then gradually increasing each category as our dog is able to understand, is key to reaching fluency in any kind of learning. A great example is in introducing a recall cue: starting in the living room (no distraction) a few feet away (minimal distance) gives your dog time to build a foundation with a recall cue before we’d progress to practicing recall on a long line, in a yard, around squirrels, near exciting people, etc! If your dog is having a hard time with learning a cue, it could be that one of the 3 D’s is too challenging for now! Knowing Honey from the shelter, what could I tell her? On one hand, it’s sad and embarrassing to see such lack of care and compassion that organisations and “industry leaders” aren’t even bothering with performative action. But on the other hand, it’s helpful to know for certain that no organisation or institution in this industry has changed since Summer 2020, and we won’t be lulled into thinking any of them are “safe” while they simultaneously tokenise us and reproduce systems of oppression in the industry. I also would like to highly recommend checking out @camppawsible’s post on where we can choose to learn instead of supporting industry-suppressing giants who won’t invest in anti-racism and accessibility. In 2017, I started looking for a rescue dog shortly after a traumatic family event. I found Buddy, a supposed 3-4 year old Great Dane/blue tick hound mix, and fell in love with his big goofy self. It turned out he was a 9 mo-1yr old Great Pyrenees/Catahoula mix! I’d had a deep connection to my childhood dog, Ira, but knew nothing about dog behavior. After taking him to well-meaning but poorly taught trainings that set him up to fail, I fell for the “quick fix” options and tried using an e-collar, which led to disastrous fallout over the years. I felt horrible and threw it away within a few weeks, but the damage would take years to rewrite. Thankfully, while looking for qualified resources to help with Buddy’s intense reactivity, I discovered @tailsofconnection and the R+, force free, science-based training world! Buddy’s quality of life improved so drastically with the help of certified trainers that it motivated me to begin my own certification journey to help other pet parents find kind, accessible, science-based training. My final push toward this journey was in June 2022, when I was suddenly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 24. I began learning about Diabetic Alert Dogs and their lifesaving work, and decided to pursue certification with the possibility of someday becoming a multi-certified service dog trainer. I graduated as a Victoria Stilwell Academy Certified Dog Trainer (VSA-CDT) September 2023! Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to begin volunteering with my absolute dream org: @everydogaustin in January 2023. I’m thrilled to have joined their team as a group class trainer and assistant since August! Thanks to them I’ve now started my Fear Free certification as well. FUNdamentally Excellent! Yesterday, the latest batch of FUNdamentals students graduated. Group classes are especially difficult for adolescent dogs and dogs that haven’t had a chance to practice around many distractions. But this lot smashed it! I’m really happy to announce that I have completed Michael Shikashio’s Aggression in Dogs Master Course!🐕 🤨 What does this mean? It means I have expanded my knowledge on behaviour modification in aggression cases specifically (dog-dog, dog-human, resource guarding, intra-household aggression) as well as learned about things such as ethology of aggression, medical issues that might contribute to aggressive behaviour displays and most importantly how to keep everyone around safe when working with aggression or when dog fights escalate. 🫵🏻 What does this mean for you? It means that I can help more of you as I am now even better equipped to deal with the above mentioned case types. And as time goes on, I will gain more and more experience & confidence helping you through the trickiest of cases. ⚠️ Note that I will never take a case on that I feel is out of my depth and I don’t feel comfortable with. If you come to me with a case I’m not sure about I consult those with more experience in that area / refer it on to them & learn from them. This means you will not be left alone with no help.
