Big ideas often start with a little spark. The simplest practices provide an endless array of inspiration for my larger works. Case in point: In my watercolor journals, I’ve been intuitively exploring concentric circles and spirals for a while now. (Scroll through my feed and you’ll see plenty more of these 🌀⭕️💧.) It’ll be interesting to see where they may lead once I fully return to the studio in June.

Today I had the honor of giving a presentation about my art process to @allysongreycosm ’s “Start a Painting” workshop students. Since I hunted down all these progress photos, I figured I would share with you too! Swipe through for a start & end photo of a few works. Some key points about my process.. ✨ It’s all about fun and flow for me. At the bare minimum, I start with a color covering my canvas. Sometimes I paint in words of intention. If I’m using a reference photo, I look at it for 1/4 to 1/2 of the painting process then I put it away. I use it to get the structure down but I hate looking at a screen while I’m painting AND I want the painting to be itself, not a copy of something. ✨ I don’t plan much if at all. Sometimes it gets really messy and I LOVE that part. Even if it looks bad during the process. That’s why I love acrylic paints, they are very forgiving (I do not enjoy oils). ✨ I work on a few paintings at once. At the early stage, I feel like the paintings need to “marinate”. If I work on them too much at the beginning, they get muddy. Sometimes I feel more like a sculptor, trying to find the perfect form within the colors. If starting a painting is daunting to you, just know you can create beauty with no big plan. It just takes practice. You may not know but I’ve spent many years painting and drawing from life; this is what helps inform my paintings. Without that experience, I would not be able to render form well. I hope these words are of interest to some of you! 💕

Photo from last May ~ A friend was visiting the studio and I showed her my new canvases from @sunbeltmfg. This east Texas company is an absolute gem. While I’ve recently been painting more on paper and other supports (more on that soon), it’s great to know that Sunbelt isn’t far and I can go in person as needed. They also ship, of course. My dress is from @daughtersofindia. Yes, I often paint in my good clothes (depending on what I’m working on). And when I do, I simply throw on an apron and I’m set.

Road trip watercolor painting affords me yet another opportunity to release expectations and allow the process to truly take center stage. The movement while riding in a car adds an extra layer of the unexpected. There is more chaos and less control than if I were sitting stationary. Lines are squiggly, wavering and uneven. This little painting was not what I envisioned and I rather like it. Also I used @beampaints for the first time. It’s the perfect little palette for travel.

Details of a watercolor journal painting ~ Lately I’ve been spending some of my studio time cultivating a daily watercolor journaling practice. These little watercolors can be useful as studies and ideas for larger paintings, to use in collage work, or as standalone paintings. Regardless, I create them for myself, intuitively. There is no pressure or desire to make them perfect or sellable. How liberating.

When you find your niche, your vibe, your very personal own brand of creativity - it ends up flowing from you like a river. I am not sure if there was any clear moment I decided to paint the way I do. People told me for a long while before I realised it myself that I have a distinctive style. Sat a my easel recently I looked over to a stack of paintings and saw how cohesive they all looked. It was so clearly *me* in the form of pigment, movement, the things I love, the things that make me come alive. The way my body moves, naturally, because of its experiences and form. The music I listen to while I paint, and the visuals that pulsate through my brain as I'm meditating. All of it comes together to become this unique art, that nobody in the world does quite like I do. Each of you has this same power. Cosmic color study in watercolor ~ As this point in my ongoing Instagram drama/battle/headache, the platform continues to delete about half my posts as soon as I share them. Since I’m not someone who cares for drama, battles, or headaches, I’m stepping away. This will be my last post on this account for a while, I think. I don’t have problems sharing stories, so I’ll be sure to do so occasionally. Perhaps I’ll share some of my work on my personal page @stephanie_moonwater. That account still works. Something is wrong with my Instagram account. When this happens, I don’t want to continue attempting to create posts. Because it’s work. I created, saved, and shared a post here today but it all disappear immediately. The photo is gone, all my writing is gone… I no longer trust this platform and I’m not sure why I ever did. Instagram allowed me to post at @stephanie_moonwater but I can’t share my art here. 🤷♀️ To be honest, I’m increasingly disillusioned and frustrated by technology and social media. And I see accounts being taken down, hacked, etc. It has happened to me in the recent past. So I leave you with a screenshot color grid that I like. Whether for art, design or other, perhaps it can inspire new color schemes, as it has for me.
Occasionally, I will rework a painting that I don’t really like. I believe this was the first time I reworked a painting from my watercolor journals. Now it is pleasing to me and I can reference it for future ideas, if desired.

As I lean into this piece, and allow it to take me where it will, I feel that there is meaning in it that will be different for each individual. Certainly it has meant varying things to me as I've worked on it. Our human form is just a casing, a suit we wear for a short while. Our true nature is so much more than that. There is nothing we can do to *try* to connect with the universe because we are already there. Its inescapable. Yet we cannot see it. You cannot look into your own eyes. There is no 'self' to be found because it is everywhere, and nowhere. You are the stars, the nebula, planets, the birds, the earth. "A Willow Waterfall" 2021 Mixed Media on 1x 3 foot Canvas DM for availability I'm so happy with how it this piece turned out! My favorite part is the color scheme, purple, green & white are a combination I've played with a few times, and I have a feeling I'll be doing it again! It's funny because you'd think purple and green wouldn't go together, but I always see it in nature and get that big "YES" sort of heartbeat!! This one has been completely free flowing, I had absolutely no idea what it would be or what colors were going to happen, I just let it happen. The only think I knew is that when I put the texture on there I left some space for flowing water. Of course my go to is trees, usually if I don't start with a concept a tree inevitably comes out, maybe I have tree consciousness in my heart! I do feel really connected to trees! Then, to my surprise, a waterfall decided to come out of the Willow Tree! The water has a heavy gloss gel surface that's different than the texture of the rest of the piece, so hopefully it gives the feeling of real water. I like to think people will start to hear a bubbling brook when they look at it up close! The rest of the piece has heavy texture that came from a few half-dried-out mediums. They arrived that way brand new in the mail, but I rather liked them better that way because it made me use them all up in a new way! Relativity is that which is in relation to, or, that which is in relationship with something. That which is seen, is also seen by something and the two are relative to one another, one wouldn’t exist without the other. Separation would not exist without connection. Perhaps the opposites are one, two sides of the same thing. Oneness, Unity, and Connection are at the core of my own personal spiritual belief system. This is an unfinished painting I started in 2022 and haven’t touched in quite some months. The last time I painted it was last year after having quite a beautiful lsd experience, I must have added some color and white while on the come down of the trip but then couldn’t find myself able to concentrate properly. So after that, I just havent touched it. 🎨👁️The shapes and colors just pop out more when I paint after or during a trip 🌱and I can see what you can say the Universe wants me to paint. Becoming and open channel. To feel. To charge these paintings with all the intensity of the emotions ive experienced in this life and others. Bringing forth ancient knowledge of some sort. This painting is a mix of some of the shapes and themes that come to me through these experiences. So many cultures blended into one… a dream manifesting.✨ . Brush stroke-The trio of dragons work in progress. Thats not what it’s called just what I’m calling it. I just got a pack of new small detail brushes that I’ll be able to use to get the small detail I want now. This painting isnt very big so lots of teeny brush strokes are used.🫠 The dragons are a representation of power balance of natures forces. Possibly elemental dragons. I’ve had a lot of excuses to not paint, one being that i fractured my heel during a hike and this is a little over a week today being out of the boot. Pain puts you in a strange place but I’m more eager now that the healing is almost done. I can almost walk again… almost. I still have crutches 🙃 but going through this over the past 2 months has been a new experience lol, one I can bring to my artwork. Healing takes time but it happens. Especially when you want it so bad♥️🌱 . A little brush work from the last time I painted this (it’s hanging in my tattoo room until I get back at it), and some detail. . 🌱It’s funny, sometimes you paint something and absolutely love it… and then all of a sudden you paint over the entire thing creating something new. I started this back in 2021/2022 after taking LSD. being in a loving relationship with my partner @plvnt_bassmusic , helped show that no matter what, your love will radiate like the sun ☀️ ……and then put I this painting off for a while and worked on other pieces. when I ran out of canvas or Paper to work on, something told me to just start fresh with an older piece, and so I did. I grabbed the painting and completely covered it…. This painting is gone, covered completely… just an under layer to the next. I think this piece became the trio of dragons I have posted before (which I need to finish), but I look at this piece now and I want to dive deeper into it🙏🏼 So, I will probably print this on canvas and continue to paint it. It will be mixed media in a sense but this was an original acrylic painting that I painted with my hands. ✨🌀 @android_jones art inspired so much art in me with the music he paired his art to.
