The winged figure depicted on each bottle of @bartinney, is called ‘Elevage’ & symbolises the French art of the selective maturing & ascension of a wine to its ultimate heights, unfurling its most noble traits. The first vines planted on Bartinney, were Chardonnay, planted in 1990. These are also the highest plantings on the estate. #WineRoutingWithLloyd - Wine Colour Facts As a general guide, the deeper the color, the heavier the wine structure. White wines darken as they age, turning a deeper gold or yellow color & eventually turning brown. - Light white wines have a bright straw or light yellow colour with high acidity & no tannins. - Medium white wines are a bit more yellow or gold & have moderate acidity & occasionally feature tannins. - Deep white wines are solidly golden & glow with a rich brightness. They typically have a full body with lower acidity. - Younger white wines are clear and bright. - Older white wines turn amber & then brown. The more structured it is, the more likely it is to age well & develop delicious tertiary flavours. Red wines that are more opaque generally contain higher levels of tannin. Red wines with higher sulfite additions have reduced color intensity. - Light red wines will typically be very bright, meaning high acidity & less structure & often be described as pale ruby or pale garnet. - Medium red wines will typically be a bit less bright & more opaque than light red. Colours in this category verge on purple. Translating to more structure & medium acidity. - Deep red wines are full-bodied red wines that are almost entirely opaque & typically are highly structured with high tannin & lower acidity. Colours are purple & magenta. - Younger wines have more will be brighter, with peak fruit & harsher tannins. Colours will be vibrant & bright. - Older wines turn dusty brick red & eventually brown. A curated vertical tasting of @waterford_estate Single Vineyard #Chardonnay - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2018 - A favourite of mine - seeing & experiencing ageing on white wines. From a vineyard planted in 1988, making it one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks in our region. Grapes from this single vineyard are unique due to their aromatics, acidity & saline finish. French oak is used sparingly, to complement & enhance the wine, while adding to its ageing potential. #WineRoutingWithLloyd

The region is known as the golden triangle, due to the number of award-winning wines it produces. It is widely considered as the top Cabernet producing area in the country. This Cabernet Sauvignon is characterised by earthy aromatics, well-textured tannins & fresh finishes. Treated to a tasting of the new release from @trizannesignaturewines, I had favourites. Immensely elegant - the #PinotNoir was a stand out. Aromatic with fresh ripe strawberries and crushed herbs. A very subtle herbaceousness follows from nose to palate. A wine with beautiful texture & a long elegant finish. If you have not experienced a cool climate #Syrah - this one will win you over. Subtle spice & red fruits. Soft florals entwined with a gentle salinity. A strong mouthfeel & bold, yet smooth lingering finish. Sophistication at it's peak. 1. Maybe We Should Discuss Méthode Ancestrale? 🍾✨👀 🍾 Went Wine Routing with @lloydi_boy and experienced a wine I’ve never encountered before (a favourite feeling) 🥂 @kenforrestervineyards Stained Glass Méthode Ancestrale, made from Grenache Noir 🍾 What is Méthode Ancestrale? The original method of making sparkling wine. Cloudy with a chance of good. This minimal intervention winemaking technique, in this instance was made by encouraging spontaneous fermentation from the naturally occurring yeast on the berries. Aged on the lees for 18 months 🥂 So what did it taste like? The wine was dry and textural, with the aroma of strawberries 🍾 Have you tasted a méthode Ancestrale wine? The line up from @nitidawine 🙌🏻 a flashback of a delightful tasting at @thetastingroomrsa in Waterkloof. But more about @nitidawine - a Durbanville Wine Estate. After the Veller family purchased the smallest of the Durbanville farms in 1990 Bernhard, a qualified engineer, took 2 weeks off work in 1992 to plant some vineyard, planning to only make a few barrels of wine. Three years later they won their first Gold Medal for their Sauvignon Blanc. A method of minimal intervention & allowing the wines to show off the micro-climate. Upon arrival at @thewinery.co, we were introduced to @detraffordwines - #CheninBlanc 2020 & 2021, each adorning the unique label, which is a collaboration between #Rita_Trafford_Textiles & @lisa.strachan. A quality barrel fermented Chenin Blanc produced from certified Old Bush Vine Chenin. Very light yellow colour & subtle aromas & layers of flavours, fine lime, dried peach skin, guava roll, lemon mint & a hint of fynbos honey. @davidtrafford, a qualified architect, spoke about every vintage & recalls the ups & downs experienced with each. It was incredible to have an intimate sitting with an individual who can speak so passionately about the process & art of making wine. A good salesman? Yes. A great winemaker? Hell yes! One thing that I definitely took from that evening at @thewinery.co, was that one definitely does not have to enjoy a varietal in order to appreciate the wine that comes from it. My appreciation for a good Merlot has been benchmarked by @detraffordwines. I’ll be upfront & admit that Merlot has never been a varietal that I’m particularly fond of. However, I recently indulged in a vertical tasting of Merlot from @detraffordwines at @thewinery.co to learn more about the varietal from one of the most prominent winemakers in our country - @davidtrafford Interesting choice - the tasting was present from the youngest vintage, through to the oldest. We work our way through 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and finished with the 2001. It was uncanny; each vintage so unique, yet so familiar.
