Hey there, welcome to our page - Yorkshire Past & Plate!! This page is to explore the history and discover the amazing food in York & Leeds! The photo in the top right corner is the famous historic street in York called The Shambles. The street featured preserved medieval buildings that can be dated back as far as the 14th century! The pic in the bottom left is York Minster, the largest medieval gothic cathedral in the UK. It was once struck by a lightning bolt in 1984 and the fire heavily destroyed the roof. Thankfully the building was returned to its former glory after a 4-year restoration project at a cost of £2m. Interested in knowing more about history in York? This weeks favourite item in the house is from Greer, another new house steward! She loves fashion and clothing and so her favourite object is the portrait of Mary Rowe found in the lobby. Portrait of Mary Rowe, nee Spearman, Lady Mayoress, 1749 and 1768. The oil painting was painted in 1752 by Henry Pickering, an artist who specialised in fabric drapery and fine detail. I adore the colour of this painting, delicate rococo pastel pink, but also the sumptuous shape of the dress worn by Mary Rowe. The Georgian period is my favourite and Pickering shows the mid-century fashion in its best light, from the silk of the gown, the voluminous pocket hoops and ribboned stomacher, to the delicate fichu, muslin cloth below her neck. This weeks favourite item is from our housekeeper Sharon, here's what she has to say- To most visitors, a walk around the Mansion House is a peep into the life of a previous era both from the resident’s perspective as well as the employees. So many rooms to visit, so many clocks to hear ticking, so many ornaments to admire and an array of gold and silver glistening to brighten the dullest day. So how can one choose their favourite?...Just one from the collection of delights within the Mansion House?... For me, it’s an adventure down to the basement and into the historic kitchen to uncover my favourite item...BEHOLD!.. The huge fireplace with its blackened sooty walls, its cooking grates and spits. You can almost visualise the pots bubbling, the meat sizzling and the faces glowing from the heat and the stress of the preparation of the vast array of dishes. Not the most breath taking item in the house but it was certainly the most used! So many wonderful, tasty dishes have been prepared by using the simplest form of a cooker. The old blackened fireplace... a busy production area, a producer of fine foods, a heat source to warm your toes or toast your bread... it’s not an immediate beauty, but the longer your look at it the more beautiful and thought provoking it becomes… By the way can you spot the Dragon in picture number 2? Over the next few weeks we want to share with you our staff members favourite items of the house! Starting with one of our new house stewards, Olivia. here she playing on the gallery herself! My favourite feature of the house is the Minstrel Gallery which overlooks the state room. Music has historically played a huge part in civic activity in York, with the City Waites (the Mayor’s official troupe of musicians) still accompanying him at various events in the modern day. The first written record of the City Waites dates from the 14th century. The Minstrel Gallery is small, so only a limited number of musicians could play up there at once. This gives us a good idea of the kind of instruments that would have likely been played up there when it was first built – mostly smaller woodwind instruments of the Baroque style (flutes, oboes and cornets) rather than the larger stringed instruments of the later Classical era in music. #York #LoveYork #YorkMansionHouse #WhatsOnYork #VisitYork #YorkHiddenGems #ThrowbackThursday

The Multangular Tower (so named because of its many sides) is the last surviving tower of the 8 original Roman towers. You may notice the red stripe of bricks roughly 3m from the ground - possibly a repair from cannon fire in the civil war! Victoria bar is located in perhaps the least walked area of the city walls - the south corner. When it was built in the mid 1800s, the ruins of an old gateway were found underneath. This is likely to be Lounelith gateway from the 12th century, which was closed up (whether due to lack of usage or fewer gates to guard is unknown) and lost for centuries, until George Hudson raised the funds for this gateway to be built, and the ruins accidentally found. Our house steward Izzy's favourite objects in the collection are these three 18th century style choppers, located in the historic kitchen. They would have been used for chopping fruit, vegetables and herbs, and for separating bread dough. They provide an insight into how the lavish dishes served during meals such as the Lord Mayor's Day dinner, 1785- as seen in the dining room- were prepared. The Hodgson Cup is our house steward Lizzie's favourite item, because of the extraordinary woman who gifted it to the city of York in 1737. Bridget Hodgson was a York resident who after her second husbands’ death became a successful Midwife, and a very wealthy woman in her own right. From her will we can see she bequeathed items of gold and silver, a coral necklace, a velvet saddle and many cash gifts. She was a savvy business woman with records showing she loaned hundreds of pounds to other York locals, she passed the ownership of these loans to her daughter also named Bridget in her will. Bridget’s practise as a midwife spanned the social spectrum, her work took her across parish boundaries and throughout the city. She was clearly a popular woman with 7 Godchildren; all four of her goddaughters named Bridget. Out of great respect, and no doubt because of the large number of York children she had safely delivered, when she died the Aldermen of the City carried her coffin from church to grave.
