A lovely flash visit to the city of York on route to delivering work to the Maiden Bridge Gallery for their summer show. We took a stroll round the narrow streets filled with fabulous historic buildings. I popped into the Pyramid Gallery in Stone gate which always has beautiful work in it. The current show features glass including some beautifully crafted blown and cut glass by Tim Rawlinson. Would love to relocate the business here in the coming years. 'The Tower' is historical fiction at its finest - an absolute MUST-READ! 🏰🧡 🏰 'The Tower' by Flora Carr is about Mary Queen of Scots' time imprisoned in Lochleven Castle in Scotland. It focuses on the dynamics between the Queen, her maids (Scottish Jane & French Cuckoo) and later, her lady in waiting, Lady Seton. As they grow more & more claustrophobic, it becomes clear that nobody is coming to their rescue. Will they risk an escape??! 🌟 I cannot even begin to explain how good this was. It felt SO VIVID, like you're right there in the room with them. The women felt so viscerally real - the stress of the imprisonment, Mary's pregnancy, the fear of the men in the tower. It was so tense, especially during the escape plots. ✍️ I think a lot of the reason why this book felt so immediate is that it's written in the present tense. Not sure why present tense is so controversial in historical fiction because it works like a dream in this! 🇫🇷 We get to know the characters really well, and are shown every nuance of their relationships and how they change over time. The rivalry between the two chambermaids, Jane & Cuckoo, especially fascinated me. 🌊 Loved how Greek mythology & Scottish folklore was woven into the story. Mary Stuart is often compared to a siren & Jane to a selkie. 📚 Flora Carr herself came to the York Waterstones to talk about 'The Tower!' She's originally from York & I got to meet her (& she signed my copy!!) I enjoyed hearing how she immersed herself in the research & spent time in museums to see objects Mary would have used and touched. 🧡 Overall, this was a STUNNING piece of historical fiction which I will be recommending to everyone. The city or ‘bar’ walls of York are the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. The name of the Black Swan Inn occurs several times in the journals, since it was a very well-known inn in York: since 1706 it had been one of the main coaching houses in town, later also the point of arrival and departure for the connections to Halifax. They are open to walk on from about 8.00am to dusk daily (except in dangerous weather conditions) York’s medieval City Walls (or “Bar Walls”), encircle the historic City of York and comprise 3.4km (2 miles) of surviving masonry with adjoining walkways making it approx a 3. Mile circular walk. They are the longest town walls in England. A walk round the walls takes about 2 hours and offers an opportunity to see the main features of the walls. There are four main bars, or fortified gateways, two smaller gateways with more modern stonework and one postern (a very small gateway defended by a tower) Don’t be wrongly guided by the sight of our little Ruby 🐾 Not long after that photo we saw a sign saying no dogs and had to take her back to the caravan 🤣😫😤 A great free activity when in York! It gave me proper Vikings vibes for all fans of that amazing TV series!
