Greetings from locked down Melbourne. Sorry we haven't posted for a while but to be honest - it has taken some time to find the new routine and come to terms with the current situation. How are my Victorian friends and businesses working their way through this challenge ? What strategies are helping you through ? A few things working for our family at the moment are: Schedule - key for my husband, the children and I. We have set school times and tasks to be completed - which are reinforced with a visual schedule. This includes a morning run before school. Dress ups encouraged (see pic). Meal Planning - saving unnecessary runs to the dreaded supermarket. It also means that meal prep can be started by 1 person and completed by a another. Sharing the load - Not always an option but if it can be done, give it a try. My husband has a 9 to 5 job but has negotiated to start work earlier so he can assist with remote learning for an hour or two a day. Doesn't seem like much but it relieves some pressure from me. The kids love it and he gets to experience the highs and lows of getting your 5 year old to sit still and follow direction. Giving to others - I get great joy from helping other people but have not been able to drop meals to friends etc due to lock down restrictions. Instead I have used local businesses to surprise friends with some random gifts. My kids love to write letters to their friends and deliver them (if local). They also love sharing their books they think their friends will enjoy. It's ok not to be ok - some days the school work won't be done, your work targets won't be met and you may just feel annoyed and overwhelmed. Know you are not alone. The news of home schooling for term 2 nearly broke me today. My young, active and very social children miss their mates, they miss the park, the miss the “normal” . They won’t remember this part of Isolation – they will remember the hours spent making play doh monsters, setting up shops, making forts, bike riding, reading stories and the family dinners they helped create. These memories will be undone if those we love become ill. I implore anyone with itchy feet this Easter to stop and think who they will hurt if they get sick. Go for a walk, eat Easter Eggs, chat to a friend, read a book but stay home. If we do, our kids will look back on this time with gratitude. Think about apps that perhaps could be on your tablet or computer that are distracting on your phone. - Turn off notifications that are unnecessary (you may have lots of FB messenger conversations on the go but you can turn off notifications for these but still still see them). - How are your apps filed ? You can put them in folders or alphabetical order. - Are you using your phone wifi when you could be using your home wifi ? Its a good time to check you are on the best data plan possible. - Are your pictures being backed up ? - Most importantly use your phone, social distancing doesnt mean distancing from those we love. A few things to consider - FB messenger, face time, whats app are great ways to keep in touch in times of social distancing. Make sure friends, neighbours, family are ok and you continue to be social (virtually). - Watching the news is draining so try listening to podcasts to stay informed. Spotify have a great playlist that is called daily drive. It is a mix of newspodcasts and music. - If you cant get outside check out some online workouts, yoga or Pilates. - Many local shops have a online store as well as shop front. Check out their online stores and and buy something special for yourself or to send to a friend. If your local cafe is offering meals to take home, use the service.
