Classes are over and finals are just around the corner. I’m feeling very nostalgic about this past year. So many godly professors, mind-blowing classes, new friends, and long nights. I can never relive this year, and it makes me a bit sad. This past year has been hard no doubt, but it has been the sweetest of my life. I long to sit again in Dr. Mitchell’s Freedom’s and Dr. Spinney’s US History. But that is in the past. If there is one thing of advice I would give my younger self, it would be: Don’t rush your life. Don’t live in the nostalgia of the past nor live in your vision for the future. Live today, because that is all you have been given. Soak in the classes you are in, books you are reading, and friendships you are given. Don’t strive in your own strength, the work of your own hands, or what your fingers have made (see Isaiah 17:7). Commit your works to the Lord, and accept every gift for what it is: a gift. Someday you will look back at the season you are in now and will say, “I wish I had stewarded that more. I wish I would have appreciated that more.” Be grateful. Savor the little things. ✨We are all energy. Our emotions, thoughts and what we expose ourselves to influence our energy level (vibration). Things that make you feel joy, happiness, love, peace -those elevate your vibration. Conversely, things that bog us down -anger, jealousy, fear, insecurity -they bring lower energy levels. As humans, it is completely normal to fluctuate through various energy levels, but what truly influences our experience in life is where we choose to place our attention and thoughts regularly. Using the old adage as an example, "do you see the glass half full or half empty?," if you go through life for the most part seeing it half full - your experiences will be reflective of that; and similarly, half empty you will attract experiences that don't bring you the joy & peace you desire. 🙌🏻There are many of ways of raising your vibration. As mentioned in last week's post- reading books, or material of a spiritual nature. As well as: music -binaural beats, singing bowls, shamanic drumming, being out in nature -placing your bare feet in the grass, touching a tree, or just being in the sun. Your connection to animals; including your pets, being of service to others (being selfless, acts of kindness, spreading positivity), gratitude is a significant way to raise your vibration- focus on what is good in your life and be appreciative of those things, meditating/sitting in silence, and interestingly, smelling roses can exponentially increase your vibration. Coconut - Rose Buckwheat Porridge 💖 LOVE Bowl Can you smell the roses? 🤤 I soaked my Buckwheat overnight, then drained and rinsed it well before cooking. I cooked it on the stove with water, grated coconut, whole clove, ground cardamom, ceylon cinnamon, ginger powder, and pure vanilla. Halfway through the cooking, I added sliced bananas and rose petals. I served the porridge with toasted cashews, a sprinkle of coconut sugar, and cacao nibs. This was so delicious!!! In the thick of battle… this is where I respite. This quote resonated deeply during this month’s #respitemyself staycation. I’ve been in a battle this year and especially these last couple months. I’ve been recuperating from one illness to another and so when the time came for my monthly respite, I hesitated. How can I go away for two days when I’m not at my best and am pretty much in bed most of the time? Well, God told me I can and I will. Our context plays a critical role in any battle we are faced. So often times, if we can remove ourselves from the context though the battle still rages, it can provide us a place to B R E A T H E . I booked a hotel room and have been doing what I want, how I want, when I want. As a live in guardian/caregiver to my parents, I forget how relieving it is to entrust others with them and I don’t have to be on call - mentally or physically. The time is brief but it’s the respite necessary for anyone who is in a season they never planned for themselves and/or feel uncertain what the future seasons hold. Today, I made my way to this cafe I found on Yelp. It’s an adorable space and they served one of my favorite vices - Cortado. Today is a me day. I will shed the heavy coat of responsibility, the "have to's", and the mind numbing urgent tasks that suck the joy out of living a natural as opposed to a normal life. I am going to frolic, throw a toy for Sassy, watch drivel on TV, and eat some licorice ice cream. Or maybe maple walnut. I like that flavour too. If you want to live a joyous and fulfilled life, the frivolous things that don't get you money, fame, recognition or growth are actually essential for the amelioration of all of those. Balance is key. It's only worth it if you are happy and at peace. You must take time to smell the roses, bake a cake, tell your grandchildren how much you love them, smile at your neighbour, and have the second cup of coffee. Be mindful of every task and enjoy the fleeting moment of time. It's all there is. Now. Tomorrow will be a work day and I will honour that journey with as much pleasure as this one - mindfully and fully present. I love my work and I love my play.
