And this weekend the online seminar was all about pointe work with the age 12-18 years. Keeping in mind that I am on pointe only little more than one year in my adult life, it was quite advanced. These are our focal steps for our Intermediate and Beginner Technique classes this May😊 Each month we choose a handful of focal steps to learn throughout the Thursday lessons. We prepare for these movements at the barre and then break the steps down in detail before incorporating them into our centre choreography. Our selected focal steps always complement our Variation of the month (which we learn on Sundays). Thursday classes focus on the technical aspects of the variation so that our Sunday classes become a space to focus on your artistry and performance :) The Technique classes adopt an open class format, with different choreography and exercises each week, but our focal steps provide a degree of intentional repetition, this helps to naturally embed these movements into your muscle memory. If you are a beginner trying to learn ballet vocabulary, our focal steps also offer a manageable way to direct your focus each lesson. We aim to teach 4-5 focal steps in detail each month :) So if you attend both our Thursday and Sunday classes each week, you’ll definitely be well on your way to adding to your ballet knowledge, terminology and ability to connect these steps together in choreography :)

Este último mês foi muito intenso! Aconteceu tanta coisa aqui dentro que não consigo nem descrever … Este mês revivi uma experiência que há muito tempo já não vivia, e que me fez lembrar de muitas sensações e emoções! Me fez recordar a menina que eu era dançando junto dos meus mestres ( que vão estar sempre vivos dentro de mim), aqueles que me ensinaram tudo, me moldaram e me fizeram crescer como pessoa, como artista e como mulher! Me recordei de cada dificuldade, cada alegria e cada momento que a minha bailarina interior viveu nesses anos… A vida me deu muito mais do que eu pude imaginar, trouxe pra perto da minha dança grandes artistas, pessoas incríveis e principalmente grandes emoções ! E ouso dizer que fez o mesmo agora com o pilates! Tudo passou, afinal o tempo passa, eu não sou mais a mesma de ontem e veja só… nenhum de nós é… A única coisa que ficou foi aquilo que pulsa dentro de mim! Never tried stretch ribbon but curious about all of the hype? Here are the main reasons why you might want to give it a shot on your next pair of pointe shoes (or replace your ribbons on your current pointes): 1) Some dancers struggle with consistency. Yes, even advanced dancers. Getting your ribbons tied tight enough that they don’t loosen during class or rehearsal OR even worse: so tight that you cause pain (this could also create injuries). 2) Speed and sleek lines. Having stretch in the ribbon allows for dancers to sew the ribbon to the shoe in a loop so that they can put the shoe on twist the ribbon and slip it over and onto their ankle in seconds. ✨Variation of the Month - May ⭐️ Our new variation starts Sunday 5 May! Join us to learn this routine over the course of four weeks, with an optional mini solo or group performance in class in Week 4. (Intermediate and Beginner class options available). Swipe to the final slide to see this variation performed by Gudrun Bojesen from the Royal Danish Ballet. This piece is short but quite the challenge! It is the first time we will be teaching Bournonville, characterised by fast footwork and known for being a little tricky and tiring! But given the routine is about 1 minute long, we will have lots of time for practice and repetition over the course of the month. Whilst the style may be somewhat different than what you are used to, we think you are all up for the challenge :). It’s a great month to focus on jumps, petit allegro and batterie will be the focus of our technique classes throughout May - stay tuned to see our focal steps. It really is true that once you’re a part of the PSB Family, you’re always a part of the PSB Family. We have 3 new staff members for 2024 and all three are past students or teachers!! Let’s ‘re’introduce them to you all with a good old fashioned ‘Teacher Feature’ starting with the gorgeous Miss Saskia. Originating from Perth, Saskia started her dance journey at The Perth School of Ballet at age 7. In 2014, Saskia was accepted into Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and attained a diploma and advanced diploma in dance. She later participated in Queensland Ballet’s pre-professional program, performing in productions with the company. She went on to complete a Bachelor in Arts (Dance) through WAAPA which she soon after landed her first full-time dance contract based in Germany. Saskia decided to redirect her focus to academics and completed a three-year Bachelor of Health Science degree, specialising in Nutrition Bioscience. Today, Saskia combines her dance background and nutrition expertise by working as a dance nutritionist and dance teacher. In 2024, she launched her dance nutrition business- Dance Nutrition Australia. Having transitioned from a professional dancer to a dance nutritionist, she understands unique challenges dancers face. While on staff at PSB Saskia will not only be teaching classes but also offering group workshops and 1:1 consultation to support dancers in making informed choices about their nutrition. The newest class added to Saskia’s Monday evening lineup at Jolimont is a brand new ADULT BALLET class. Specifically designed for the complete novice, this is the class for all those contacting us asking for a class for someone who has never set foot in a studio before! Quem me vê hoje fazendo aula em outros países sem medo não imagina o tempo que cultivei essa confiança e trabalhei na minha autoestima. Eu era a bailarina adulta que saía chorando de sala de aula, que me cobrava demais, que levava a minha ansiedade para a barra e tinha muita dificuldade em apreciar o processo – assim como reconhecer meus pequenos avanços e ficar feliz com o que eu tinha naquele momento. Eu fugia de outras aulas em eventos. Morria de medo de fazer aula com outros professores e mostrar minhas dificuldades e vulnerabilidades. Eu me rendia ao desespero e achava que ia perder anos de técnica caso ficasse 6 meses sem aula. O que mudou? O desejo de viver o ballet de forma mais leve e com amor. Desde a produção de conteúdo pro meia ponta até minha vivência em sala. O ballet com cobrança e desespero estava acabando com a minha saúde mental. E escolher dançar tem que ser escolher ser feliz. Hoje, eu ainda não decoro sequências, ainda não faço baterias direito, ainda tenho dificuldade em esticar o joelho nos piqués e ainda não faço as aulas que eu queria estar fazendo toda semana. Mas em vez de chorar, eu aproveito o melhor que eu tenho. Seja o que o meu corpo oferece, ou a vida. Não fico emburrada em aulas, eu rio de mim mesma. Não foco no passo que não peguei, mas sim nas minhas linhas que são sempre elogiadas, na minha limpeza técnica que eu sei que tenho e no fato de ser uma inspiração para outras bailarinas adultas. Não foco nas aulas perdidas mas sim nas 3 aulas muito boas que eu fiz em Londres que me lembraram que, na verdade, nada está perdido.
