One of the things I love - and therefore missed the most - when I enrolled in my 20-month MBA programme was the ability to travel with some degree of frequency. Not only was my time constrained, but financial resources too (B-school comes to a price tag - but that’s another topic entirely) . Sure, I was on the plane a lot between the UK and Rwanda. In fact, I was travelling to other destinations but they were all work-related trips so I just had no real down time. . Funny enough, I looked back at my many pre- B-school travel photos often, telling myself that when it was all over, I’d resume travelling again. But who was I kidding??!!! Time and money are still constrained (this time round, for different reasons). . But YOLO, so if there’s a will, there is a way. I shall resume travelling again. Until then though, I’ll live through my old pictures. . The day was 1 July 2017. I landed in Kigali, Rwanda for the first time, with not much more than a promise by an institution, which I had only come across some 6 months earlier: that I would be challenged to be an African leader fit for the 21st century. . Looking back at this moment, I cannot say for sure whether I truly believed this promise, or whether I had any real expectations. . What I do remember was being haunted by the experience of “October 2014” (see my last post) and knowing that being right here, on African soil (granted in a country I knew very little about except for the much publicised 1994 genocide) was what my soul - not my head, and not my heart - needed. . I had closed the doors on opportunities presented to me to pursue an MBA at more “renowned” (B)usiness-schools and chose little-known @alubusiness, which was at the time nothing more than a social experiment as far as I was concerned. . 20 months, many complaints, some moments of feeling let down, and a whole bunch of stress-induced grey hairs later, I left @alubusiness in March 2019 with so much gratitude in my life. I gained new friends, new perspectives, a ‘new home’, and have so many changes I am looking forward to. Watch this space.... . My experience is unique to me and I cannot say that anyone else would land with the same outcomes or reach the same conclusions as me. However, the lesson to take (if you were looking for one) is that sometimes - in fact many times - you have to step out in faith and be comfortable to hold on to nothing more than hope. Yes, be smart and make your contingency plans, but change only happens in the zone of discomfort, so take that chance. . PS I have been challenged to personally employ 1000 people by 2030.
