• 35 YEARS LATER Yesterday, on the 23rd of January, I turned 35. I’m not really into data and numbers but I will always remember this age. At 35, I realised my dream: to go back to Africa and to overland its lands with my own car Rafiki. At 35, I decided to take the risk to live far away from home, in a car, to refuse a sedentary lifestyle, to be constantly on the move, to get attached to people and to learn goodbyes, to make my gut my compass and the road my freedom, to be alone and to accept to feel lonely, to accept to be bored and to forget time, to feel alive with lions and to feel empty when my limits are gone, to play with the inner child and to become, to embrace pain, rage, sadness, and fear, and to face emotions, to stay raw, to stay calm, to hate and to love, to get lost, to get full, to feel true, to be me. At 35, I chose to be me. I chose to say no, I chose to admit my mistakes, to change my plans, to amend my dreams, to go away and to stay nomad, to meet somebody and to keep traveling, to fight for freedom because freedom is so rare, to fight for truth because truth is everything. • MY DEAR RAFIKI, LET’S DO IT POLE POLE I was literally overthinking everything the past month. I spent days and nights overthinking this adventure, my life, and even Rafiki. I was fascinated by a very few badass bikers I met on the road (and I’m actually traveling with 4 bikers in real time since a few days). I was surprised to see me considering buying a bike sometimes in 2023 and to keep overlanding Africa a very different way. But I don’t have a license and this is to take into account and I was thinking of finding a solution while reaching SA. But I’m not 100% sure yet because this would mean to get rid of…Rafiki. And I just cannot do that. Also, this month of re-thinking the adventure even brought my mind to consider selling Rafiki either in Africa or in France. Because money is disappearing I tell you everything my mind was wondering recently and I love the way my thoughts change, evolve and mature (I think). But don’t worry. I will not sell Rafiki and the adventure is going on. I just needed to share my past thoughts with you. I was feeling tired and drained and also influenced by others. That’s the way it is and I so feel determined to keep overlanding across Africa with my best friend. LESS MONEY & MORE TIME: HOW? Let’s talk honestly: it feels weird to see money coming out of my bank account and absolutely nothing coming in anymore, since last January. The education I received conditioned me to save money as soon as possible to purchase a home one day. My home. I can see my siblings, my cousins, and my friends investing, building homes, families, or careers. This never attracted me, ever. Am I blind? Stupid? Unconscious? Crazy? Not normal? Childish? (Because these are the only explanations, they say). I’m turning 35 in 2 months and I never bought or invested in anything. Well…except if Rafiki counts. If yes, it has been my biggest investment so far…to access absolute freedom. Call me crazy when I’m proud to call me ‘wild soul’. • 9 MONTHS LATER. Mesmerised by the lush green landscape of Uganda, I try to remember who I was 9 months ago, that day when I said goodbye to my family with absolutely no idea when I’ll be back. Will I be able to go back one day though? I remember that day when I couldn’t even look at my mum, a river was flooding her face, but my heart was so determined: I had to go. Anyway. I had to hit the road on this freezing cold morning of January. I had to take the risk, this is my life, and I will always pursue my dreams. I was craving for freedom, I was craving to be me again, I was craving for everything I’m living today. My only fear? To arrive in Africa and to have lost this passion. Don’t worry, this sensation never happened. Again, there are many Africas in Africa. I just learn so much anywhere I go. My heart definitely does not beat at the same rhythm everywhere though. Today, I’m approaching what I call the ‘loop’ before heading back to Southern Africa. I just love the route I naturally took so far. I could discover authentic and colourful Zambia, the red dust of Northwest Tanzania, the shy and touching people of Rwanda, and now, real and pure Uganda. But deep inside, my heart belongs to Southern Africa. One more time, I’ve been thinking about this region a lot (too much!) the past few days. I miss it. I miss Botswana, I miss South Africa and I miss Namibia. So much. Let’s see where my heart will impulsively decide to go. And this is what I want: no plan. 9 months of incredible and intense freedom, 9 months to let this inner wild child to become, 9 months to LIVE, to embrace this nomadic lifestyle I was made for…and maybe forever. • I FINALLY MET A SOLO OVERLANDER! HERE IS LILLI. 9 months already I’m looking to meet / connect with solo overlanders roaming across Africa -Eastern Africa especially. …and I virtually connected with Lilli on Facebook months ago. I was already fascinated by this strong and determined woman traveling solo across Africa in her unique -and so orange!- Land Cruiser (my dream 4x4!). We thus follow each other with a close attention and -obvious- common passions and lifestyle. Eventually Lilli wrote me a few weeks ago letting me know she was planning to leave Uganda to enter Tanzania anytime soon. I was still roaming in Rwanda at that time, but on my way to Uganda. Let’s meet halfway then! And surely we did. We had the greatest few days together. We don’t have the same age but we are on the same page. Very much. We talked for hours, about everything: overlanding, Africa, love; life. She is humble and that’s what seduced me first. Not easy to find authentic, humble, and passionate people, even amongst travellers. I didn’t want these moments to stop. I didn’t want Lilli to leave. I felt very selfish to feel this way but I enjoyed her company from the bottom of my heart. Tutto superato, adesso lo vedete tra le braccia del suo papà. Ma tanti bambini, ragazzi, e anche adulti - purtroppo - non ce la fanno. Chi ha fortuna viene curato, gli altri possono solo sperare. Ecco, dalle parti della nostra missione, e in tutta la Tanzania, la vera emergenza è la malaria. E dunque la notizia che oggi qualcuno ha sperimentato e finalmente annunciato il vaccino contro la malaria, per la nostra Africa, ci rende particolarmente felici. Il nostro pensiero va agli amici che abbiamo perso, ai medici che per questo hanno lottato, ai missionari che tentano giornalmente di porre argine: e al bambino che, morendo di meningite malarica tra le braccia dell’amico dott. Rosario Tumino, ha dato un senso a questo nostro Progetto. Tra i circa 90 studenti sostenuti dal Progetto Tanzania, ce n’è uno che si chiama Alex: ha 15 anni, viene da Mahuninga, e da grande vuole fare il dottore. Alex viene sostenuto dal piccolo Giorgio Tancredi, bambino di Modica, il quale gli ha scritto di pugno una lettera. Quella che vedete in foto. La lettera ha colpito padre Salvatore, che - durante la sua visita odierna a Makifu - ha voluto personalmente conoscere Alex, e insieme hanno salutato il piccolo amico siciliano. Ci sembrava bello far conoscere questa, tra le tante belle storie del Progetto, perché - per l’ennesima volta - nasce dalla purezza d’animo. Un altro anno scolastico sta iniziando anche in Tanzania: e questi sono i giorni in cui tanti piccoli studenti, che hanno superato gli esami di scuola elementare, provano ad affrontare le prove per accedere alle scuole superiori. Queste immagini ci arrivano dalla ‘nostra’ scuola di Kitanewa, con i ‘nostri’ banchi, le ‘nostre’ sedie, le aule alle quali abbiamo dato la ‘nostra’ mano e gli studenti che, presto, inizieremo a sostenere. Tutto quello che - nel corso di questi anni - siamo riusciti a portare avanti, tutti insieme, è lì davanti agli occhi. È un modo per ringraziare tutti e per essere felici. Un grazie particolare va a Steven Ngonyani, preside della scuola ma soprattutto amico onnipresente.
